Solidaire Inca Tour - Helping Children Village of Virgen de La Paz - Chiclayo Peru -- Part 3
CHICLAYO
In the Chiclayo region, the economic situation is quite depressed. Thousands of homeless young children live outside of the society, with no better solution than practicing precarious jobs.
Our project in the region is about helping a children residence called Aldea de la Paz which can host up to 57 persons. The aldea organizes activities to help the kids to reintegrate and progress in their scholar courses. Unfortunately, the aldea has not enough financial means to carry out their program. That is why we participate through the optimization of the education program.
We supply the aldea with scholar materials and work in team with the organization Alliance Franaise so that the pupils can present international French exams and ultimately can access to a better life for them and their families. Soon, we will get involved in a project near Huancavelica region which is located outside of the major touristic area: this region had been particularly devastated by Maoist rebellion movement during the terrorism years.

A #vacation to #Bolivia, a landlocked South American country, holds the promise of discovery for adventurous souls. While pretty Sucre is Bolivia’s judicial capital, La Paz is its political capital and also its main tourist hub.
Journey high to the Mirador Laikacota for city views. Deep in the valley below #visit the central Plaza Murillo, home to the most precious buildings: the Presidential Palace, National Congress and Metropolitan Cathedral. Stay near the Plaza San Francisco for its proximity to hidden gems, such as the curious Witches’ Market, the Musical Instrument Museum and the Coca Museum.
Bolivia is a diamond in the rough; relatively undeveloped, but extremely authentic, colorful and cultural. Bolivia’s riches shine through in the country’s high altiplanos, its floating reed islands on Lake Titicaca, the silver mines of Potosi, the infinite salt flats of the Salar de Uyuni and the untamed tropical lowlands in the vast Amazon basin.
For now, we hope you enjoy watching this #travel #guide as much as we enjoyed making it.

BOLIVIA: BOLIVIAN INDIANS CELEBRATE BEGINNING OF THEIR NEW YEAR
Natural Sound
Thousands of Bolivian Indians celebrated the beginning of their new year in an ancient ceremony dedicated to their Sun God, Inti.
Dressed in traditional robes, they gathered at dawn at the ruined temple of Kalasasaya to welcome the first rays of sun of the year.
The New Year sun festival dates back thousands of years to the Inca civilization, and is celebrated each year by its descendants.
The Aymara Indians of Bolivia - the heirs to the ancient Inca culture - have welcomed in their New Year.
According to the Inca calendar, Sunday is both the shortest day and longest night of the year and marks the first day of the year 5506.
Almost eight thousand people rose at dawn to take part in the festival, at the temple at Tiwanaku, 80 kilometers from the capital, La Paz.
Many waved multi-coloured flags, a symbol of unity among indigenous peoples all across Latin America.
According to this ancient indigenous culture, Tiwanaku was an important astrological centre.
Here, Inca priests watched the movement of the moon and stars, and worshipped the Sun God, Inti.
The New Year is marked by the first rays of the sun as they stream through the entrance of the Kalasasaya temple.
The Aymara believe that worshipping these rays will bring them peace and prosperity in the year to come.

La Paz - Guaqui by train (Bolivia)
We ride the train from La Pas Alto to the lakeside port of Guaqui in Bolivia on the edge of Lake Titicaca. Here we meet the twice weekly train ferry from Puno carrying grain. The journey is across barren and sparely populated land up on the Altiplano.
At 12,600 feet above sea level, the inlet of Lake Titicaca is magnificent with wildlife and reed beds.
Sadly, the ferry from Puno no longer operates as traffic is sent by road directly to La Paz, so this line is now without a service.
Part of a longer trip in Chile and Bolivia organised by Ffestiniog Travel in November 1997.

ISLA DEL SOL BOLIVIA [GRAND TOUR OF SOUTH AMERICA] 4K
We continue onwards to the Isla del Sol, Bolivia in this latest part of our Grand Tour of South America.
On this day we would spend long periods travelling, firstly around Lake Titicaca, then crossing the border from Peru and into Bolivia. After a visit to Isla del Sol, we continued on road again to La Paz the capital of Bolivia.
The scenery is breathtaking in parts and no more so when you see the distant Cordillera Real a mountain range in the South American Altiplano of Bolivia.
Our next stop was Copacabana which is the main town of Bolivia on Lake Titicaca known for its cultural, and traditional festivals. Here we would jump aboard our boat to take us to the a sacred incan island, the Isla del Sol or Sun island.
The village of Yumani, located on the south side, is the largest and most developed settlement, historians believe that the island was invaded by incans sometime in the 15th century taking control from the Tiwanaku civilisation. In the times of the Inca empire, it was believed that the Sun God was born here hence its name Island of the Sun.
Back on the boat and a return to the mainland to continue our bus journey what happened next was something no one was expecting!
We arrived at the Strait of Tiquina a passage that connects the larger and smaller parts of Lake Titicaca in Bolivia. once again we had to get across this short expanse of water, what we didnt relise is that our bus would also be making the trip!
Later that night we arrived in La Paz, and set off the following morning to start a new adventure.
Our Hotel review this time is of the Belmond Andean Explorer.

Starting from Calama Chile to Uyuni, Bolivia, then a three month dawdle across the country to La Paz and Copacabana. Just living, not really difficult. A Slideshow of the trip.
In fact we overstayed our 90 day visa (that is the maximum allowable for Bolivia in any one year) so we simply paid a fine of 20 Bs (£2) each, per day over. A simple process at the exit border and does not mean prison or any difficulties.
In the case of Bolivia where the Altoplano is typically at 4000 metres then cycling for us was impossible due to the problem of trying to breathe at such altitude. The road from Calama in Chile to Uyuni Bolivia was a climb of 3000 metres up a sandy gravel road that was the steepest we have ever known. Just walking up a slope was difficult enough so we were left with no choice but to take buses complete with our two 42kg bags full of panniers and the bikes wrapped in bubble wrap. Buses and taxi's are so cheap in Bolivia so that was a bonus. There are some who cycle but most take a bus at some stage and also with such bad roads, a mountain bike is a must, not a road bike. It is flat on the Amazonian side of the country but we prefer to see that in Brazil and Columbia. The rest of Bolivia is extremely mountainous. See the map below and the relief version inserted
Bolivia just looks and feels so different to anywhere else we have been. The people, the land, but the Spanish influence is all too familiar.
There have been more backpackers spotted in Bolivia than we have ever seen before. There is a large presence in all the towns and cities. We never expected that, however it has meant that the experience of Bolivia has been a radical departure from our normal lifestyle of travel. We have met so many backpackers from all over the world and they generally speak English so that made it easier for us as our Spanish leaves a lot to be desired.
For us, on this leg, it was not as simple as picking up your pack or bike and off you go. We had to get a station taxi (estate) to get to bus stations and hostels. It is really good to have all our cooking and entertainment gear with us though, and everything else necessary for an independant life, something that is not possible with a backpack.
It is certainly a completely different experience taking buses between cities. There is no sense of achievement so you get to another Hostel in another town and life just continues similar to the last place. It is interesting to experience the different towns but there are many similarities between them all as is the case in the UK and of course many other places. The real difference is between countries.
We have to admit that we have not had much contact with the local Bolivians other than doing the business of shopping at their small stalls or larger shops and the contact we had with Hostal management and staff. It is not only our limited Spanish because in Argentina and Chile we had a lot of contact with the populace. It's maybe that the Bolivians see so many backpackers and tourists that there is nothing special or interesting about it, however the people have been really nice and helpful and friendly so we never felt put out or uncomfortable. Partying at Loki Hostel in La Paz was great fun. We were surprised how many young people showed interest in our lifestyle as they presumably have not met older couples living on the road for life.
Once again we found the food from street vendors and market cafes to be extremely boring and tasteless. Most restaurant meals of the budget variety like the set lunches (Almuerzo) around £1.50, were soup, a meat dish with rice and potatoes and a small pudding. There were a couple of occasions when we just had to spend as much as we would in the west, to get some quality, and on those rare occasions the standard of cuisine was as good as anywhere. Cooking ourselves was mostly the answer to our needs. There were a few western type supermarkets but the range was very limited and anything imported was twice the price of the originating country. It is nice to find the likes of Tabasco and a few other favourites from the west however. Of course the markets had a fantastic range or fruit and vegetables and the cold meats and cheddar cheese were there as well.
So yes, we did have a great time, not as good as cycling, but lots of time to enjoy the endless sunshine though the nights were jolly cold. It is a fascinating country with so much to see and do but no we did not go on that crazy World's most dangerous road outside of La Paz as there have been so many bad accidents and deaths and also it is so expensive.

Lake Titicaca, Bolivia - Tour South America 2018 from the Drone - HD 2K
Lake Titicaca is a large, deep lake in the Andes on the border of Bolivia and Peru. By volume of water and by surface area, it is the largest lake in South America.
It is often called the highest navigable lake in the world, with a surface elevation of above 3,800 metres.
Isla del Sol (Island of the Sun) is located in the southern part of Lake Titicaca. It is a rocky, hilly island with many eucalyptus trees. There are no motor vehicles or paved roads on the island. The main economic activity of the approximately 800 families on the island is farming, with fishing and tourism augmenting the subsistence economy. Of the several villages, Yumani and Ch'allapampa are the largest. There are over 80 ruins on the island. Most of these date to the Inca period circa the 15th century AD. Archaeologists have discovered evidence that people lived on the island as far back as the third millennium BC. Among the ruins on the island are Titi Qala, a labyrinth-like building called Chinkana, Q'asa Pata, and Pillkukayna. In the religion of the Incas, it was believed that the sun god was born here.
Isla de la Luna (Island of the Moon) is situated east of Isla del Sol. Legends in Inca mythology refer to the island as the location where Viracocha commanded the rising of the moon. Archaeological ruins of an Inca nunnery were found on the eastern shore. It is known for its mythological significance to the Incas, and it is home to the ruins of the Temple of the Virgins.
It is inhabited on the Western side by a small village of about 80 people (including children). The locals are friendly, the atmosphere tranquil and quiet, and the island is without electricity. Admission fee is Bs10.

Amazing Bolivia 2011
Simply superlative -- this is Bolivia. with Marcel Pinard, Sébastien Poisson, Christine Aguiar and Grégoire Morillon
It's the hemisphere's highest, most isolated and most rugged nation. It's among the earth's coldest, warmest, windiest and steamiest spots. It boasts among the driest, saltiest and swampiest natural landscapes in the world. Although the poorest country in South America (and boy do Bolivians get tired of hearing that), it's also one of the richest in terms of natural resources. It's also South America's most indigenous country, with over 60% of the population claiming indigenous heritage, including Aymará, Quechua, Guaraní and over 30 other ethnic groups. Bolivia has it all...except, that is, for beaches. Optimism is generally high, especially among the indigenous majority, although many changes are afoot. Protests, marches and demonstrations are a perpetual part of the country's mind-boggling landscape. This is a truly extraordinary place. Put on your high-altitude goggles, take a deep breath (or three) and live superlatively.
