Inco Superstack - Sudbury, Ontario
From Wikipedia:
The Inco Superstack in Sudbury, Ontario, with a height of 380 meters (1,250 ft), is the tallest chimney in Canada and the Western hemisphere, and the second tallest freestanding chimney in the world after the GRES-2 Power Station in Kazakhstan. It is also the second tallest freestanding structure of any type in Canada, ranking behind the CN Tower but ahead of First Canadian Place, and the 27th tallest freestanding structure in the world. The Superstack sits atop the largest nickel smelting operation in the world at Inco's Copper Cliff processing facility in the city of Greater Sudbury.
It was constructed in 1972 by Inco Limited (now Vale) at an estimated cost of 25 million dollars; from the date of its completion until the GRES-2 chimney was constructed in 1987, it was the world's tallest smokestack. Between the years 1972-75 it was the tallest freestanding structure in Canada.
Throwback Thursday: The Superstack
Earlier this week, mining giant Vale made headlines when it announced that, beginning in the year 2020, it will decomission and dismantle the Superstack and replace it with two smaller stacks.
The 381-metre smokestack, the second tallest in the world, has been an iconic symbol of Sudbury since the 1970s and, on our website, many readers expressed their sadness that the towering chimney may soon vanish from the landscape.
So, to honour our sulphur spewing landmark, we dug up some old photos from the Superstack's early days.
Take a look in this week's episode of Sudbury.com's Throwback Thursday in which, this being the year of Canada's 150th Anniversary, we pay tribute to a bit of Greater Sudbury's history.

Sudbury, Ontario: Driving Around Downtown (August, 2017)
Video of downtown Sudbury, Ontario, Canada taken not long after sunrise on August 16, 2017. Covered is most of the downtown core, along with a drive at the end south on Paris Street to Science North.
Sudbury, Ontario is a city of around 160,000 located 410 kilometres north of Toronto via highway 400/69. By area, this is the largest city in Ontario and the seventh largest in Canada. By population, it is the 24th largest metro area in Canada.
The city was established in the late 1800's with the discovery of nickel ore. Incorporated as a town in 1893, at one point in the 1970's, 25% of the population worked for nickel mining company Inco. Seen in the background at times during the video is the 380 metre tall Inco Superstack, the second tallest structure in Canada after the CN Tower.
Other landmarks that can be seen in the video include the Sudbury Community Arena, home of the OHL's Sudbury Wolves, a venue that opened in 1951 (look for the statue of Stompin' Tom Connors out front). Ramsey Lake is seen near the end. The lake is the largest lake in the world that is located entirely within the boundaries of a single city. Bell Park is also seen, a previous stop on the Amazing Race Canada. Across Ramsey Lake from Bell Park is the campus of Laurentian University.
Background music: Drankin' Song, Guts and Bourbon, Bumba Crossing, all by Kevin MacLeod.

Masonic Symbols in SUDBURY ON CANADA,Just by INCO MINE .
The letter G in Freemasonry stands for both the Great Architect of the Universe and Geometry....or, to be more technically correct, it stands for Geometry under the Great Architect of the Universe.
Just as the Supreme Architect of the Universe watches the revolutions of the planets and stars in the sky, so does HE, who placed each of us here, watch each of our movements, hears not only our words, but our thoughts, as well ...and it is to HIM that we are ultimately responsible.

Watching the Slag Dump was something we would watch on a weekly basis when I was a kid. Coming from a mining town. Now it is a little bit harder, I was lucky enough to witness it again.

Sudbury Nickel Plant Ontario Canada, 1960s - Film 99016
Amateur home movie to Ontario, Canada in 1960.
View from a coach window towards a processing plant and area of mined land. The group visit the Inco nickel smelter in Sudbury. The people stand beside the coach wearing white hard hats. A furnace burning and molten metals. The group exit the factory. View of smoke belching from a large chimney. The visitors stand around a bit more chatting amongst themselves, before a few more scenes of liquid metal being poured from a hopper. A further view from the coach window as the group leave the plant. A train pulling cargo carts arrives at the processing plant. View from the moving vehicle with the large factory in the distance and residential housing in the foreground. Smoking chimneys. Another scene of molten produce, this time spilling in unison from a row of hoppers being tipped over. The red molten liquid forms unusual patterns as it flows downhill, which initially look like large molten human forms. This is a slag pour.
