Vietnam Travel Guide: Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, Ho Chi Minh
Gorgeous beaches, fascinating and complicated history, incredible food, lush nature; Vietnam is a country that truly has it all. Whether this country is first or fiftieth on your list, our travel guide has all the information you need to know if you’re planning (or dreaming of planning!) a trip to Vietnam.
Leave your expectations behind if you’re heading to Vietnam: here, you’ll eat noodles for breakfast, do your shopping in the middle of the night, and discover a country with a new story around every corner.
Hanoi more than delivers on urban excitement. If you’re looking for unique and mouth-watering food, the night markets of the Vietnamese capital should be your very first stop. You can enjoy a zippy ride on a scooter, all the street-food you can eat, and a night exploring the rapid development of this modern city. From trendy clubs to traditional puppet shows, experience a nightlife that’s all Vietnam’s own, and eat and drink the night away with locals and visitors alike!
Of course, Vietnam isn’t all fast-paced cities and rooftop bars. For a slower pace, head to Ha Long Bay and sail alongside limestone islets, with their lush rainforests towering above your head. The water is emerald-green, matching the vibrant greenery, and a sailing excursion here is like nothing else you’ve experienced before! A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the islets of Ha Long Bay are said have been thrown into the bay by a dragon protecting the people of Vietnam. Take a junk boat tour for a close encounter, or try scuba diving or snorkelling in the bay!
You’ll find a new adventure around every corner in Vietnam. From breakfast in the Bình Tây Market and a secret tunnel system in Ho Chi Minh City, to sailing along the Mekong Delta in a traditional basket boat, you can find your perfect trip - no matter what that looks like - somewhere in Vietnam.
There’s no time like the present to start planning an adventure of your own in this majestic country, so why not start today? Head over to TourRadar to explore the range of tours available, or watch more of our videos exploring Vietnam if you still haven’t gotten enough of seeing the beautiful views and incredible adventures you could be having.

My Favorite Place in Vietnam: Tam Coc // Ninh Binh, Vietnam
After four straight days of non-stop travel, I arrived at my final destination before Hanoi: Tam Coc. This area near Ninh Binh, Vietnam is just stunning!
Imagine the famous Ha Long Bay with its tall, narrow limestone peaks jutting out of the water, but instead of water, there were lush green rice fields. Also, less tourists... That's Tam Coc!

I arrived in Ninh Binh after spending the night in a sleeper car on a train from Dong Hoi. I wasn't sure if I'd find a place to store my bag, but immediately I saw signs to a place that would take them and rent me a bike. From there, I rode to Tam Coc and found myself surrounded by an emerald dream. The landscape was absolutely stunning!
I made my way to Bich Dong Pagoda, the home of three historic temples built into a mountain. Then, I biked along the river to watch the tourists who rented boats float through the countryside. I took a break from bike riding to at Thai Vi Temple, a isolated, quiet retreat in the middle of a valley. And then I climbed up the most stunning view of Tam Coc at Hang Mua, where I got to take in all the the gorgeousness of this beautiful place.

One Day Cycling in Hoi An Ancient Town - Unesco Heritage Site by Incredible Asia Journeys
Hoi An was added to Unesco's World Heritage List in 1999. Brief description by UNESCO: Hoi An constitutes an exceptionally well preserved example of a South-East Asian trading port from the period of the 15th to 19th centuries. Its buildings and its street pattern reflect the influences, both indigenous and foreign, that combined to produce this unique heritage site.

Saigon (or Ho Chi Minh City as it is officially known) is the vibrant, cosmopolitan hub of Vietnam and the original ‘Pearl of the Orient’.
Saigon is a feast for the senses, fast paced, colourful, loud and utterly mesmerising. Whilst it hurtles head first into the 21st Century, Saigon is a city with a compelling and unforgettable history.
Key sites such as the historic Reunification Palace, the Revolutionary Museum and the War Remnants Museum provide a fascinating insight into the Vietnam War and the historic fall of Saigon in 1975. Famous landmarks include the French colonial landmarks Hotel de Ville and the beautiful Notre Dame Cathedral in the main square and the lively Ben Thanh Market, which sells everything from food, clothing and bags to souvenirs.
On The Go’s Vietnam group tours, tailor made holidays and private journeys reveal the very best of this incredible country and can be made to suit all styles of travel.
Bangkok to Hanoi | FIRST PHO IN VIETNAM!
Location: Bangkok, Thailand to Hanoi, Vietnam.
Traveling from Bangkok to Hanoi was a treat in comparison to the rough overland travel we'd grown accustom to over the past few weeks. Today we flew from Bangkok (BKK) to Hanoi (HAN) via Veit Jet.
Veit Jet offered the cheapest price between Bangkok and Hanoi. I had read some bad reviews about the airline. However, I have to say that our trip from BKK was HAN was very enjoyable. Checkin at the Bangkok Airport was a breeze, and flight left and arrived on time.
Once we arrived at the Hanoi Airport, things didn't quite a smoothly. Immigration took at least two hours. Then we had trouble finding the public bus into the city center of Hanoi. However, we quickly forgot all of our problems when we were upgrade to a suite room at the Hilton Garden Inn Hanoi!

Sprawling Halong City is the gateway to Halong Bay - the jewel in Vietnam’s scenic crown!
Widely considered to be one of the natural wonders of the world, this UNESCO World Heritage listed region is simply breath-taking. Thousands of majestic limestone, jungle covered peaks and isles, rise dramatically out of the sparkling emerald waters of the bay.
On the tiny islands, illuminated caves and picturesque hidden coves of all shapes and sizes await discovery and the towering peaks provide some of the best rock climbing in South East Asia.
There are also a number of colourful floating markets dotted around the bay. The largest and most popular island in Halong Bay is jungle clad Cat Ba, which offers a wide range of adventure activities including trekking in Cat Ba National Park, biking, climbing and sailing.
Just south of Cat Ba, the offshore islands of beautiful Lan Ha Bay, offer pristine white sand beaches. The ideal way to explore Halong Bay is onboard a traditional Chinese style Junk boat which can either be privately chartered or shared.
On The Go’s Vietnam group tours, tailor made holidays and private journeys reveal the very best of this incredible country and can be made to suit all styles of travel.

Pham Ngu Lao nightlife is also one of Ho Chi Minh’s finest, with throngs of street vendors, bia hoi stalls, lively bars, and downtown clubs filling up the lively scene. Interesting nightlife entertainment spots include The View Rooftop Bar, Seventeen Saloon, Go 2 and Crazy Buffalo Nightclub as well as many smaller pubs that are known for their cheap drinks and happy hour promos. It’s also common around here to meet friendly expats who are more than happy to share a few tips about travelling in and beyond Vietnam. If you want to immerse yourself in the local culture, we highly suggest getting up early and visit the parks within the area. It is interesting to see (and even to join in on) the elders participating in Tai Chi-like exercise sessions. Another must-do is heading to the morning markets such as Ben Tanh Market, where local vendors sell a wide array of fresh produce, household supplies, and Vietnamese street food at attractive prices. As Pham Ngu Lao is not such a large area, it’s the perfect place to explore on foot - the best time to do this is in the morning and late afternoon as the weather can be rather scorching at the height of the day. If you’re feeling adventurous, there are also travel agencies that can help arrange for day trips within the city centre and beyond...
