Magical Indawgyi Lake - Myanmar - Sunrise to Sunset
Indawgyi Lake is located on the northern part of Myanmar, in Kachin State. It is about 13 Km wide and 24 Km long. The lake is part of the Indawgyi Lake Wildlife Sanctuary established in 1999, which is famous for a variety of bird species. The lake is surrounded by small villages, where people make a living from agriculture, mainly fishing. numerous Buddhist Pagodas dot the area, adding a spiritual atmosphere to the already enchanting lake.
I visited Indawgyi on January 2017. The moment I arrived, I understood I came to heaven on earth. I stayed several days and explored the it by motorbike, bicycle, motorboat and kayak. Each trip gave me another perspective about this unique place, where people and nature coexist. But not for long - areas of algae are already seen in some parts of the lake, a sign for increased human activity. Currently the lake supplies the demand for fish, but a growth in human activity might shake this delicate balance. It was a fabulous opportunity to document this place before tourism and/or villages population grows.

The Lonton Area by Indawgyi Lake (Myanmar)
Lonton or Lone Ton / လုံးတုံ sort of serves as the NGO / tourist hub for Indawgyi Lake / အင်းတော်ကြီ as the only accommodations (the Indaw Mahar Guesthouse) are here among with some places to eat. One can rent a bike to ride through the countryside to nearby villages and to where one can get a boat to Shwe Myintzu Yaylal Pagoda.
Boat Trip Around Indawgyi Lake (Myanmar)
Indawgyi Lake / အင်းတော်ကြီ is one of the largest inland lakes in Southeast Asia and is located in Mohnyin Township in the Kachin State of Myanmar. The lake measures 13 kilometres (8.1 mi) east to west, and 24 kilometres (15 mi) north to south. There are over 20 villages around the lake. The predominant ethnic groups living in the surroundings of the lake are the Shan and the Kachin, who mainly practice agriculture. It is 546 feet (166 m) above the sea level.
One of Myanmar's important bird areas, 10 endangered species can be found. Of these species, greylag geese, Oriental darter and purple swamphen are prominent during the month of January. A tour of the lake by boat (30k kyats or $22.13 total split between the tourists) or canoe allows one to view a large array of wetland species. It appears that the lake and surrounding wetlands provide an important winter feeding habitat.
Shwe Myitzu Pagoda is the most famous cultural site at Indawgyi Lake. This 'floating' pagoda attracts around one hundred thousand people during the pagoda festival held at Indawgyi Lake annually. During the dry season, there is a natural causeway to the island pagoda. Otherwise, its only reached by boat.
A local NGO/Community Organization is very helpful if you message them on Facebook:
Their office also provides bikes (7,000 kyats or $5.16 per day), canoes and arrange boat trips (30k kyats or $22.13 total split between the tourists) around the lake.

Time for another rest day, this time at the placid lake Indawgyi. Some stuff to look for: a temple on the water, empty refugee camps, a bamboo Buddha and a checkpoint.

Addressing Fisheries Decline at In Daw Gyi Lake
In Daw Gyi lake in Kachin State, Myanmar, is one of the largest inland freshwater lakes in Southeast Asia, and many people depend on it for their livelihoods. A variety of factors, including over-fishing, illegal logging and gold mining, as well as local conflict have led to a decline in fish populations and fish catch. As part of the WLE Greater Mekong MK29 project, Working together for a better Kachin landscape, WLE, the University of East Anglia, the Nyein/Shalom Foundation, the London School of Economics and Political Science, and the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) bring you this story from Kachin State. Envinronmental Protection in Myanmar | Global 3000
For years environmental protection in Myanmar fell under the jurisdiction of the military regime. Gradual democratic reform in the country has seen a change in strategy. The goverment in Rangoon is now allowing NGOs to come in and work with local populations to protect their enviroment.
One example is Lake Indawgyi, one of the largest inland lakes in Southeast Asia and a key ecosystem in the region. The NGO Fauna and Flora International is working with local residents to preserve the lake's natural beauty.

Discovering Northwest Myanmar 11 - Into Kachin State
In this leg, I go from the town of Indaw north into Kachin State and the beautiful lake of Indawgyi.
The Magic of Indawgyi
Indawgyi is Myanmar’s largest freshwater lake. It has a secretive stillness that is only interrupted by the intermittent engine buzz of small slipper-shaped fishing boats and the screech of seagulls -- noisy tourists far from home, who wheel and bicker around the Shwe Myintzu Pagoda.
