Steve Hindy: The Craft Beer Revolution | Talks at Google
Steve Hindy, founder of the Brooklyn Brewery, discusses his latest book The Craft Beer Revolution: How a Band of Microbrewers Is Transforming the World's Favorite Drink.
Over the past 40 years craft-brewed beer has exploded in growth. In 1980, a handful of “microbrewery” pioneers launched a revolution that would challenge the dominance of the national brands, Budweiser, Coors, and Miller, and change the way Americans think about, and drink, beer. Today, there are more than 2,700 craft breweries in the United States and another 1,500 are in the works. Their influence is spreading to Europe’s great brewing nations, and to countries all over the globe. In The Craft Beer Revolution, Steve Hindy, co-founder of Brooklyn Brewery, tells the inside story of how a band of homebrewers and microbrewers came together to become one of America’s great entrepreneurial triumphs. Beginning with Fritz Maytag, scion of the washing machine company, and Jack McAuliffe, a US Navy submariner who developed a passion for real beer while serving in Scotland, Hindy tells the story of hundreds of creative businesses like Deschutes Brewery, New Belgium, Dogfish Head, and Harpoon. He shows how their individual and collective efforts have combined to grab 10 percent of the dollar share of the US beer market.
Hindy also explores how Budweiser, Miller, and Coors, all now owned by international conglomerates, are creating their own craft-style beers, the same way major food companies have acquired or created smaller organic labels to court credibility with a new generation of discerning eaters and drinkers. This is a timely and fascinating look at what America’s new generation of entrepreneurs can learn from the intrepid pioneering brewers who are transforming the way Americans enjoy this wonderful, inexpensive, storied beverage: beer.
Craft Beer Acquisitions: Sellouts or Success Stories?
The craft beer sector has shown a steady growth despite many small and independent breweries being acquired by beer giants.
According to the Brewers Association (BA), “in 2016, craft brewers produced 24.6 million barrels, and saw a 6 percent rise in volume on a comparable base and a 10 percent increase in retail dollar value...By adding 1.4 million barrels, craft brewer growth outpaced the 1.2 million barrels lost from the craft segment, based on purchases by large brewing companies. Microbreweries and brewpubs delivered 90 percent of the craft brewer growth.”
In an effort to continue nurturing that growth, the BA decided to create an Independent Craft Brewer Seal with the reasoning that the logo would serve as a tool for craft-beer enthusiasts to distinguish if their favorite beer was made by an independent brewer or not. In order to carry the stamp, a brewery has to meet the “craft brewer definition” determined by BA.

Austin Homebrew Grand (re)Opening Party
Saturday, March 13th, Austin Homebrew celebrated the grand opening of their new location at 9129 Metric Blvd with beer, music, food and good times.
It was a great party. I'm pretty sure the first hot day this year... and it barely capped over 85. Geeze.
Beer by Uncle Billy's, Real Ale, Live Oak, Independence, (512), NXNW, Lovejoys, Saint Arnold, Sierra Nevada, Sam Adams, and Draught House (although the DH keg fell through at the last minute, it's the thought that counts).
At one point there was a snaffu with the plastic cups running out, but the crowd got wise and went inside to purchase the new AHS laser etched glasses. These things are hot as shit, and you know the wife was pleased as punch when she learned I brought home another pint glass.
Not only was it a great event, there were great people present. The guys from Black Star Co-op were pouring the beer, Jester King were present with an impressive presentation board and brewery information, and it's always a great day when I run into Josh from Hops and Grain.
Also, in the most random of coincidences, I was standing in line when Carl, the Beer My Valentine runner up, walked up and introduced himself and even before I finished shaking his hand Janice, the Beer My Valentine winner, got in line behind me and said hello.
Isn't that crazy?!?!
Moving on.
If you haven't made it out to the new location, you should. It's great. JB explained they moved from the previous 6,000 sqf location on Burnet to the new 18,000 sqf one.
That's something like three times as big.
He explained that part of the move to the new location allows AHS to purchase in larger bulk and trickle down the savings to us homebrewers. Nice.
Also, they have more registers at the counter in the show room!
All in all, it was a lot of fun. The various kegs moved quickly (the Uncle Billy's Wood Eye Rye was gone before I could blink), but there was always something good ready to go.
And true to form, it being a hot day, I decided to start off with the Live Oak Primus, cause that's always a good idea.
Thanks to Andrew Pogue for the photographs and JIB for the fancy video work and Garageband for the rockin' tunes!

Four charged with prostitution in massage parlor raid
Deputies charged four workers at four separate massage parlors with prostitution and solicitation after a widespread raid Wednesday afternoon. I live five minutes down the street, and I'm just absolutely shocked, Evan Volz, who lives near one of the businesses where employees allegedly offered more-than-standard service, said. The suspects are: Pel Chin, 45, a worker at Oriental Massage at 7117 Salem Road in Cincinnati; Zhang Cuimin, 46, of Eden Massage at 8431 Beechmont Avenue; Chunye Jiao, 49, an employee of Massage at 6089 Salem Road; and Cao Haiyan, 44, of USA Spa at 1969 8 Mile Road. All four establishments declined to comment on the arrests. According to Volz and other neighbors, some of the parlors in question were not always recognizable as businesses -- they did not advertise or self-identify with outside signage and kept black curtains over their windows. (Prostitution) seems to be moving into more suburban areas, neighbor Dan Lape said. Nobody's immune to it. Lape added he believes if the women are convicted, the establishments at which they worked should be shut down and replaced.

Chicago Bulls Miller Beer Special Edition | Television Commercial | 1996
Chicago Bulls Miller Beer Special Edition | Television Commercial | 1996
The Miller Brewing Company is an American beer brewing company headquartered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, that was owned until October 11, 2016 by the MillerCoors division of the MillerCoors–Molson Coors joint venture. The company has brewing facilities in Albany, Georgia; Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin; Fort Worth, Texas; Irwindale, California; Milwaukee, Wisconsin; and Trenton, Ohio. On July 1, 2008, Miller formed MillerCoors, a joint venture with rival Molson Coors to consolidate the production and distribution of its products in the United States, with each parent company's corporate operations and international operations to remain separate and independent of the joint venture.
The joint venture ended after the SABMiller operation was acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev (AB InBev) on October 10, 2016. The new company is called Anheuser-Busch InBev SA/NV (AB InBev).[1] On October 11, 2016, the company sold the Miller brand portfolio outside of the U.S. and Puerto Rico to Molson Coors, which also retained the rights to all of the brands currently in the MillerCoors portfolio for the U.S. and Puerto Rico.[2]
Molson Coors is now sole owner of Miller Brewing Company and plans to keep the MillerCoors name and the Chicago headquarters and plans to operate the company in much the same manner as before October 11, 2016.[3] For the consumer, and for employees, the change to 100 percent ownership (from the previous 42 percent) by Molson Coors will not be apparent in the U.S., according to Jon Stern, MillerCoors' director of media relations. The good news is that none of this impacts Milwaukee or Wisconsin. It'll be business as usual. Miller Lite, Coors light, Miller High Life and Leinenkugel's -- and frankly all the rest of our brands will continue to be brewed by us.

Texas House Bill 660, the Film
A week ago we teamed up wt Scott Metzger of Freetail Brewing to put together this video in support of HB 660.
We also asked Scott, who has been blogging daily on HB 660 news over at his Brewednotbattered blog, to guest post on BTA.
Take it away, Scott.
House Bill 660, filed by Representative Mike Villarreal, would allow Texas Brewpubs to sell their products to wholesalers and distributors -- something that is currently outlawed in our state. Meanwhile, shelves and taps are flooded with beer from out-of-state brewpubs. For Texas to grow into a truly top class Craft Beer state, we need to stop handcuffing our brewpubs. This video was shot on a chilly evening in Austin as myself and my peers in the industry gathered to discuss what we should to make HB 660 a success. Thanks to Chris Troutman and BeerTownAustin for putting it together.
Find your representative HERE (
Write your house representative, here's a sample letter from Scott's blog:
Representative [Representative's Full Name]
[Representative's Address]
Dear Representative [Representative's Last Name],
[First Paragraph, briefly introduce yourself. Give your name and the name of your organization if it is relevant to the cause. Mention if you are personally a constituent of the Representative or what your connection to him/her is].
I am writing you today in regards to H.B. 660 relating to the sale of malt liquor, ale, and beer by the holder of a brewpub license, filed by Representative Mike Villarreal of San Antonio. This bill would allow Texas brewpubs the right to make their products available for sale off-premise, a right that out-of-state brewpubs already enjoy within the borders of Texas.
This bill would help Texas brewpubs grow and remain competitive in a rapidly growing industry; help Texas wholesale permit and distributors license holders by expanding their product portfolios; help retailers by allowing them to highlight local products; give Texas consumers greater access to the products they want; and help the state by creating new jobs and increasing the tax base.
The craft brewing industry is beginning to garner national attention, and our laws must not prevent our own small businesses from flourishing -- especially to the benefit of out-of-state businesses who are currently able to do what our own breweries cannot.
I hope you will Vote Yes for HB 660 should you be given the opportunity either on a committee or on the house floor.
Thank you for your time and service to our great state.
Sincerely,
[Your Signature if Mailing or Faxing]
