PM Modi pays floral tributes at mausoleum of first Turkmenistan president
Ashgabat, July 11 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday visited the mausoleum of the first president of Turkmenistan, Saparmurat Niyazov. PM Modi also paid floral tributes to Niyazov in Turkmenistan's capital city Ashgabat. He also offered prayers at the mausoleum along with other dignitaries present there. Following the same, PM Modi laid wreath at the Independence monument in the city. Earlier, the prime minister had a bilateral meeting with Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedow following which the two leaders issued joint statements. PM Modi hailed 'long-standing' ties between the two nations and also proposed for Turkmenistan's membership in International North South Transport Corridor.

With its lavish marble palaces, gleaming gold domes and vast expanses of manicured parkland, Ashgabat (‘the city of love’ in Arabic) has reinvented itself as a showcase city for the newly independent republic and is definitely one of Central Asia's – if not the world's – strangest places. Built almost entirely off the receipts of Turkmenistan’s oil and gas revenues, the city’s transformation continues at break-neck speed, with whole neighbourhoods facing the wrecking ball in the name of progress, and gleaming white marble monoliths springing up overnight like mushrooms.
After the 1948 earthquake, Ashgabat was rebuilt in the Soviet style, but its modern incarnation is somewhere between Las Vegas and Pyongyang, with a mixture of Bellagio fountains, Stalinist ministries of state and national monuments. There are some decent restaurants and no shortage of quirky sights, making it a pleasant place to absorb Turkmenistan’s bizarre present before heading into the rest of the country to discover its fascinating past.

Ashgabat – the capital of Neutral and Independent Turkmenistan considered as an administrative, cultural and business centre of the country since the declaration of Independence of the country on 27th of October in 1991.
The fate of Ashgabat is wonderful and unique. With its name, tracing back into centuries, and being wiped off the face of the earth in the middle of the XX century, this city has become an embodiment of immortality, the most everlasting soul of the Turkmen nation.
This nation has passed a historical way equal to the history of the whole human civilization. Having taken upon itself the world joy and miseries, having introduced its inexhaustible spiritual donation and constructive energy, this nation has not worn out in soul and talent, and its today revival witness thereof.
Being founded in 1881 the city was given the name of the adjacent village – Asgabat. The name of the rapidly built, buried in verdure Caspian oblast was translated as “city of love, fertility, welfare”. Hence became the custom: Ashgabat is a city of love. A sunny cosy oasis, protected by the Karakum desert in the north and by the Kopet - Dag ridge in the south, has aroused in its citizens bright and warm feelings towards their native city, and it has become a sing of Ashgabat, its essential peculiarity.
Having been newly built after the earthquake (6th of October in 1948), Ashgabat has preserved this peculiarity.
Day by day the capital of our motherland become more and more beautiful and gladdens the eye with its new appearance. Constellation of unique architectural buildings, lots of museums, exhibition halls and theatres attract the guests of our capital.
For the last years Ashgabat completely changed it’s former appearance. The present Ashgabat distinguishes itself with its own style, combining the best traditions of national architecture and the achievements of modern town-building such as “Arch of Neutrality”, “Museum and the monument for the victims of the Ashgabat earthquake in1948”, “National Museum”, “Monument and the park of Independence”, “Ice Palace”, “Cable Cars”, “Path of health”, “The fairy tale world of Turkmenbashy”, “Olympic swimming complex”, “Puppet theatre”, “Park of 10 Akhaltekin horses” and many others.
Fresh climatic air, clean and wide streets, new parks with majestic fountains and originality of the capital keep unforgettable impressions.
For the guest services there are lots of luxury hotels with high class services and modern design of International standard satisfy every guest of the capital.

By far the most mysterious and unexplored of Central Asia’s 'stans, Turkmenistan became famous for the truly bizarre dictatorship of Saparmyrat Niyazov, who ruled as ‘Turkmenbashi’ (‘leader of the Turkmen’) until his death in 2006. Niyazov covered this little-known desert republic with grandiose monuments and golden statues of himself. Although many of these statues have since been dismantled, plenty of visitors still think of Turkmenistan as a sort of totalitarian theme park. But the least-visited of Central Asia’s countries is far more than this – it's an ancient land of great spirituality, tradition and natural beauty.
The ancient cities of Merv and Konye-Urgench inspire visions of caravans plodding along the ancient Silk Road, while the haunting beauty of the Karakum desert and other quirky natural phenomena are equally mesmerising. The full Turkmen experience is ultimately about mingling with the warm and fascinating people themselves, whose hospitality is the stuff of legend.

PM Modi pays a visit to National Monument of Independence and Humanism in Tashkent
Tashkent, July 07 (ANI): Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday paid a visit to the National Monument of Independence and Humanism in Tashkent, during the first leg of his eight day tour to five central Asian countries and Russia. Earlier in the day, the PM also paid tribute to former Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri in Tashkent. He laid floral wreaths at a bust of Shastri. Later, he also interacted with some students at the spot and shared a light moment with them. The other countries on PM Modi's itinerary are Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.With this trip Modi will become the first Indian Prime Minister to visit five central Asian nations in one go.

In Ashgabat, capital of Turkemenistan, the sun always shine on Turkmenbashi. Literally. His statues rotate to face the sun. His image is everywhere -- from the vodka bottles to the national airline. He's even renamed the days of the week after his dead mother. He's clearly a paranoid leader with very strange sorts of behavioural patterns, states political analyst David Lewis. He is brutal and violent.
Former foreign minister Avdy Kuliev agrees. He's imprisoned many prominent people -- all of them subjected to tortures, horrendous tortures. Turkmenistan has one of the lowest life expectancy rates in region. Most of the people live in crushing poverty but an atmosphere of fear and intimidation prevents anyone speaking out.

The capital city of Turkmenistan is over-the-top and outlandish, with white marble buildings flanking wide and empty boulevards, psychedelic government edifices looming over perfectly manicured gardens. Through the last decade, the country has prospered tremendously from their vast natural gas and oil resources. The government has since poured their wealth into reforming their capital city.
Lonely Planet describes Ashgabat as a cross between Las Vegas and Pyongyang — it’s easy to see how accurate this description is once you’re here. With the glitzy marble facades and bright neon lights, Ashgabat resembles Las Vegas especially by night. On the other hand, the artificially clean and new look, and the Stalinist-like regime that governs the country reminds me of North Korea. Coming to Ashgabat is like stepping into the future and yet knowing fully well that you’re stuck in the past. Turkmenistan is a relatively wealthy country but its people are still living in a controlled regime imposed by the government.
How did it get so bizarre?
A major earthquake in 1948 wiped out the entire city of Ashgabat, killing almost 110,000 people even though Stalin refused to admit that and reported only 14,000 deaths. Ashgabat was then rebuilt in the Soviet style. In 1991, Turkmenistan finally gained independence. It’s leader Turkmenbashi (an eccentric dictator of sorts who named himself the ‘leader of the Turkmen’) immediately carried out major construction plans to welcome in “the golden era of Turkmenistan”. The result is a brand new city with a jumble of lavish golden-domed palaces, Bellagio fountains, neon-lit monuments and Stalinist ministries of state.
Is it worth visiting?
Turkmenistan is the seventh least visited country in the world, receiving only 3,000 visitors per year. Many travelers choose to skip Turkmenistan due to the strict visa rules. You can only get a tourist visa if you join a guided tour and that means added cost and limited freedom (you can also get a transit visa but that’ll only give you three to five days in the country). I would definitely recommend a visit, especially if you are a curious traveler keen on places that are unconventional and under-theradar.
