BANGLADESH: 25 YEARS OF INDEPENDENCE CELEBRATIONS
Natural Sound
Bangladesh has celebrated 25 years of independence from Pakistani rule with a huge celebration in the capital Dhaka.
From Victory Day 1995 has come a pledge to uphold the spirit of the liberation war.
While there were clashes north of the capital among student groups marking the occasion, in Dhaka the people were united.
It was a special Victory Day for Bangladeshis.
It is 25 years since Pakistani occupation forces surrendered to a joint command on December 16th, 1971 and Bangladesh won its independence.
Thousands turned out Saturday to the national monument at Savar, 30 kilometres north of Dhaka, to pay their respects to those killed in the fight for freedom.
Organisation after organisation came forward to lay wreaths at the foot of the monument - including the Bangladesh Freedom Fighters, the Awami League and the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry.
Individual families also offered floral tributes to relatives who had lost their lives.
Many remembered young heroes who showed courage in the face of a ruthless and well-equipped Pakistani occupying force.
While students from Dhaka University comprised a strong force at the ceremony, north of the capital in the town of Mymensingh student groups clashed at anniversary celebrations, with at least three people reported dead and others injured.
Celebrations on Saturday moved on to Dhaka National Stadium where acrobats and dancers entertained the crowds.
Victory Day has brought pledges from the people of Bangladesh to uphold the spirit of the liberation war, and to consolidate their hard won-independence which was only achieved after a nine-month bloody war.

National Martyrs’ Memorial ( জাতীয় স্মৃতিসৌধ Jatiya Smriti Saudha) is the national monument of Bangladesh, set up in the memory of those who died in the Bangladesh Liberation War of 1971, which brought independence and separated Bangladesh from Pakistan. It was Inaugurated at 16 December 1982.
The architecture is composed of seven pairs of triangular-shaped walls or prisms; the outermost pair being the shortest in height but widest in span, the inner pairs gradually change their aspect ratio and the innermost pair thus forms the peak point of the architecture. Each of these seven pairs of walls represents a significant chapter in the history of Bangladesh, namely the Language Movement in 1952, the Election of United Front in 1954, the Constitution Movement in 1956, the Education Movement in 1962, 6-point Movement in 1966, the Mass Uprising in 1969, and finally the climactic event of Liberation War in 1971, through which Bangladesh was liberated.
Finally in 1978 they started construction on the structure. In 1982 the structure was finally completed.
