Independence Hall, Philadelphia - Pennsylvania Travel Guide
Take a tour of Independence Hall in Philadelphia, United States -- part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
Philadelphia Pennsylvania's Independence Hall is looked upon by many as the birth place of the United States of America.
Within these now historic walls, the Declaration of Independence was drafted, debated upon and finally signed in 1776.
The bell tower of Independence Hall held the original Liberty Bell which now resides in the Liberty Bell Center.
Construction of this American landmark started in 1732 in Georgian architectural style; twenty one years later it was finally finished.
Independence Hall has gone through many restorations over the years, and in 1948 the building's interior was reverted back to its original appearance.
This monument is housed within the confines of the Independence National Historic Park and has been honored with the moniker of World Heritage Site.
Philadelphia: Independence National Historical Park
Independence National Historical Park is a United States National Park in Philadelphia that preserves several sites associated with the American Revolution and the nation's founding history. Administered by the National Park Service, the 55-acre (22 ha) park comprises much of Philadelphia's most-visited historic district. The park has been nicknamed America's most historic square mile because of its abundance of historic landmarks, and the park sites are located within the Old City and Society Hill neighborhoods of Philadelphia.
The centerpiece of the park is Independence Hall, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the Declaration of Independence and the United States Constitution were debated and adopted in the late 18th century. Independence Hall was the principal meetinghouse of the Second Continental Congress from 1775 to 1783 and the Constitutional Convention in the summer of 1787. Across the street from Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, an iconic symbol of American independence, is displayed in the Liberty Bell Center. The park contains other historic buildings, such as the First Bank of the United States, the first bank chartered by the United States Congress, and the Second Bank of the United States, which had its charter renewal vetoed by President Andrew Jackson as part of the Bank War. Carpenters' Hall, the site of the First Continental Congress, is located on Park property as well, however the building is privately owned and operated. It also contains City Tavern, a recreated colonial tavern, which was the favorite of the delegates, and John Adams felt was the finest tavern in all America.
Most of the park's historic structures are located in the vicinity of the four landscaped blocks between Chestnut, Walnut, 2nd, and 6th streets. The park also contains Franklin Court, the site of a museum dedicated to Benjamin Franklin and the United States Postal Service Museum. An additional three blocks directly north of Independence Hall, collectively known as Independence Mall, contain the Liberty Bell Center, National Constitution Center, Independence Visitor Center, and the former site of the President's House. The park also contains other historical artifacts, such as the Syng inkstand which was used during the signings of both the Declaration and the Constitution.

Most Popular Historic Sites In USA
10 best bucket-list U.S. history sites
History is best understood by walking the ground where it happened, says filmmaker Ken Burns. You feel the presence of what went on before. We go to these places because we're aware that the ghosts and echoes of an almost inexpressibly wise past summon us. Burns, whose new seven-part documentary, The Roosevelts:
Mark Twain House, Hartford, Conn.
Visitors to Mark Twain's house can sense the author's presence, Burns says. You walk into the room and you can almost see the cigar smoke. You feel that if you just moved fast enough you could see the white haired man. The home's Texas Deck porch is where Twain wrote much of Huckleberry Finn – not in Hannibal, Mo., he notes.
Yosemite National Park, California
The park, which Burns considers the most beautiful place on Earth, played a key role in our nation's attitude toward conservation. This year celebrates the 150th anniversary of the act signed by Abraham Lincoln that first preserved the area. It demonstrated that while our still-young country didn't yet have great cities or cathedrals,
French Quarter, New Orleans
Visitors can feel cultures clashing, meeting and merging in this focal point of American history. Visit to see New Orleans' architecture, its wrought iron fences, and the Mississippi River bringing all the foods and products of the hinterlands out to the Gulf of Mexico, Burns says.
The Brooklyn Bridge, New York
It's remarkable enough that John Roebling's span over the East River is still in constant use more than 130 years after it opened, but it also shows the energy, optimism and creativity of the age. It's one of the most gorgeous pieces of art and architecture of the 19th century, Burns says. In an age where most buildings were three or four stories, to have a place where seagulls flew beneath you was a thrill.
Springwood, Hyde Park, N.Y.
To get to know Franklin D. Roosevelt, who Burns considers the 20th century's most important president, you have to visit his home, located along a scenic stretch of the Hudson River. It's where he spent all his summers. It's where he came to recuperate. It's where his family had the fondest memories of being together, he says. Exhibits at Springwood address the leader's polio. You'll also see the braces he had to wear, the arcane torture devices, almost something from the Inquisition, and see his wheelchair.
Gettysburg, Pa.
America was shaken to its roots at what Burns calls the greatest battle ever fought on American soil, when more than 50,000 soldiers were killed, wounded, captured or went missing. It was so traumatic for the nation that four months later, Lincoln would go on to give the most famous speech in U.S. history, doubling down on the Declaration of Independence. The museum and visitors center offers a comprehensive preview, including a film narrated by Morgan Freeman. After touring the battlefield, Burns suggests heading to the national cemetery at sundown.
Sagamore Hill, Oyster Bay, N.Y.
Theodore Roosevelt experienced some of the best and worst moments of his life at his Long Island home. It's here that he got the news that his youngest son died in World War I, where he learned of his humiliating defeat as a third-party candidate and also where he lived with the love of his life, his second wife, Burns says. It's a magnificent palace, the trophy case of his life, with the animals and the big game he shot. It's an entirely different personality from FDR's home.
Independence Hall, Philadelphia
It's hard to overstate the importance of this building, where colonial leaders met and wrote the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution. It's the place where the United States was born, Burns says. Try to go on a hot summer day and understand that pre-air conditioning, our founding fathers gathered and tried to figure out how to invent a government.
U.S. Capitol and the National Mall, Washington
The center of U.S. political power provides a nearly palpable sense of the country's storied past and its future. Walking the Mall takes visitors by world-renowned museums of art and history. It's one of the greatest places on Earth, and the heart of it is the U.S. Capitol, perhaps the most recognized building on Earth, Burns says.
Lexington and Concord, Mass.
To comprehend the American Revolution, visit these Boston-area towns where it started. You'll understand the beginning of the guerrilla warfare that took place, Burns says, the notion that a citizenry feeling the oppression of a country across the ocean would rise up and against the most powerful government on Earth.

Adams National Historical Park
Adams National Historical Park in Quincy, Massachusetts preserves the home of Presidents of the United States John Adams and John Quincy Adams, of U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain, Charles Francis Adams, and of the writers and historians Henry Adams and Brooks Adams.
The national historical park's eleven buildings tell the story of five generations of the Adams family (from 1720 to 1927) including Presidents, First Ladies, U.S. Ministers, historians, writers, and family members who supported and contributed to their success. In addition to Peacefield, home to four generations of the Adams family, the park's main historic features include the John Adams Birthplace (October 30, 1735), the nearby John Quincy Adams Birthplace (July 11, 1767), and the Stone Library (built in 1870 to house the books of John Quincy Adams and believed to be the first presidential library), containing more than 14,000 historic volumes in 12 languages.
There is an off-site Visitors Center less than a mile away. Regularly scheduled tours of the houses are offered in season (April 19 to November 10), by guided tour only, using a tourist trolley provided by the Park Service between sites. Access to United First Parish Church, where the Adamses worshipped and are buried, is provided by the congregation for which they ask a small donation. The church is next to the street from the Visitors Center.
