Skookum Tillicum: The Strong People Of Siletz
The people of the Confederated Tribes of Siletz Indians are descendants from many different tribes and bands. Skookum Tillicum recounts the history of the Siletz Indians from the tribe's point of view - from their forced removal from their homelands to a 1.1 million-acre reservation in western Oregon, to the 1954 federal termination of the tribe. But interest in the traditional ways survived and federal recognition was ultimately regained through the hard work of many. The tribe looks forward to the future as they remember their ancient traditions and work toward strengthening their people through education and native culture.

Bridge Of The Gods
The Cascade Locks Casino is the result of a historic agreement between Governor Ted Kulongoski and the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs. In exchange for not locating the casino on environmentally sensitive lands near Hood River, the State of Oregon agreed to allow the tribe to build a resort and casino on a vacant industrial site in the City of Cascade Locks. The agreement provides a number of benefits for Oregon families and will help turn around the lives of thousands of Oregonians.
Jobs. The construction of the Cascade Locks Resort and Casino will provide 500 jobs and over 2 million hours of work for people in construction related trades over 22 months. Once operational, the casino will provide 1,700 permanent jobs in the casino and resort — in addition to other tourism jobs created in nearby communities.
Scholarships. A portion of the revenues from the casino will be used to provide scholarships to students attending Oregon colleges and universities. It is estimated that the foundation that administers these scholarships will receive $270 million in the first ten years of the casino's operation. This will grow to $850 million over the first 25 years.
Traditions - by Brenda Scott
A story about the loss of traditions, the importance of ceremonies, and efforts to bring back the old ways.
In this powerful story, Brenda, age 67, paints a vivid picture of life in Warm Springs when she was a girl. Horses were the only form of transportation, foods were gathered rather than bought in markets, and children were honored for their accomplishments. Brenda sees hope in efforts within her family and within the community, to revive aspects of a vanishing way of life.
This story was created in a workshop led by StoryCenter ( and coordinated by the Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs ( and the Oregon Health Authority’s Climate and Health Program (

No Casino in the Columbia River Gorge -- Oregon
Watch this clip from Chan 2 news and VOICE YOUR CONCERNS at public hearings.
Hearings will be held in March 2008 for the Draft Environmental Impact Study.
This news cast is from people who turned out in Portland in the Fall of 2005 to voice opposition to a Casino in the beautiful Columbia River Gorge - previously federally protected. Now the governor is trying to change this, which has surprised many people who had always thought the state governor was pro environment, natural parks, and for protecting that which makes Oregon unique and special.
As it turns out this may not be the case. Money seems to be driving these decisions and not what makes sense for Oregon's environment and the people who live and visit here year round.

Sample Transcript: Im going to talk here a bit about hit frequency, which is different than payback. Payback is how much MONEY the machine pays back over time, and hit frequency is how often the machine hits a winning combination. Theyre related, but they arent the same. My book goes into a lot more detail then I can here about hit frequency and how hit frequency is affected by certain machine types, but the important thing is that its simply how often a winning combination comes up on the reels.
The simplest game type, and what used to be the most common, is a standard multiplier. Multipliers are simple because the only thing that changes when you bet more credits is how much you get paid back should you win. Games like Double Diamond and Five Times Pay are multipliers. If you bet one credit and get bars, for example, youll win $10. Bet two credits and win $20. Bet three credits and win $30. The more you bet, the more you win simple. Betting more doesnt increase your hit frequency on these games, so its fine to bet less than max. If youre just starting out, these are probably the best way to get your feet wet. Now Im going to make a little note here about progressive machines. Progressive games are the games that have a top award that goes up the more the game is played. Progressives usually have odds and percentages that are comparable to regular reel slots, unless the progressive amount is ridiculously high, such as MegaBucks or other very large multi-casino progressives. Since thats the case, if you can find a progressive that has a high amount and isnt MegaBucks or the others, I would recommend to play it. Make sure to always bet max on progressives. If you dont bet max, then find another game, because betting less than max on a progressive is a complete waste. If you win the top award and dont bet max, you wont win the progressive. Ive seen this happen to people dozens of times, so never ever play a progressive without betting max.
The final type of game Ill talk a little about in this video is Poker. Why only a little? Because Im devoting a whole video to it next time. Video Poker is almost always going to be the best bet, for slots anyway, in the casino. The highest paybacks are in Video Poker, and the most consistent wins are there too. In my next video Ill talk about why theyre your best bet and how you can tell youre playing the highest payback video poker machine in the casino just by looking at it. Be sure to stick around for that, and Ill see you next time on Tech4Truth.

Proposed casino brings opposition from nearby tribe
MEDFORD, Ore. -- The Cow Creek Umpqua tribe is in Medford this week making its case against the proposed Coquille-owned casino on South Pacific Highway. The tribe's delegation is meeting with city leaders Tuesday. The coastal tribe bought the property last year and immediately started plans for the project. However Cow Creek Umpqua CEO Michael Rondeau says his tribe has historical ties to the Rogue Valley not the Coquille, it can be looked at in one way, Oregon for instance wouldn't be able to move into California and start a lottery, we look at it the very same way.News10 made repeated attempts to contact the Coquille tribe for a comment today but they never returned our calls.

Commissioner Parry discusses his trip to DC to lobby for the Coquille Tribe
A proposal put forth by the Coquille Indian Tribe and tentatively endorsed by the Coos County Commission to transfer management of the Coos Bay Wagon Road lands from the BLM over to the tribe is causing quite a stir and has raised a lot of questions. To provide a little background read this OVERVIEW OF THE OREGON AND CALIFORNIA (OC) LANDS ACT OF 1937

Finally, the Coos County Commission asserts that Parryapos;s recent trip to DC to explore the process by which the management of this land can be transferred to the tribe is a valid expense as it relates to county business. However, the county doesnapos;t own the Coos Bay Wagon Road lands and further, the commission has clearly taken a position that will cede any future or present rights, options or opportunities it may have had to negotiate with the BLM for a new management agreement in favor of relinquishing everything to the tribe. How can this be construed as county business?
