The Cannon at Waterside Lane Dedication - Clinton CT 1950's
The Cannon at Waterside Lane Dedication - Clinton CT 1950
Film taken by Grandmother Marguerite Comstock
and converted to video by my dad Bob Patterson
Historical Info below from
It is an English Cannonade, and bears the year marks 1790 and 1805, countersunk in the metal on the top of the gun. This Cannon was used in the war of 1776, and was taken by John Paul Jones from an English privateer in the English Channel, and sold to an English merchantman, who put it on board his brig and sailed for this country. The brig was wrecked on Saybrook Bar, and the wreckage was sold to the lighthouse keeper, Mr. Crane who in turn sold it to Captain James Farnham of Waterside Lane, Clinton (Killingworth). The cannon was later used by residents of Clinton, (Killingworth) in repelling this attack of the British frigate in 1812 . It was mounted on the Green at the foot of Waterside lane and shot so successfully as to cause the British to withdraw from the Harbor after firing a few shots ashore and into town.
As they withdrew the Sound the British burned the smallpox hospital which was located on Duck Island. This was the same expedition that the town of Essex on the Connecticut River was burned by a landing Party. Information by Steven Pandolfo

May 11, 2017 New England Fishing Report with Toby Lapinski
This weekend we have a pair of kayak events giving you some great opportunities to not only check out some of the latest and greatest, but to also test-drive your potential new boat. First up on Saturday we have the Kayak Demo Day presented by Black Hall Outfitters. This event is actually taking place as part of the larger Striper Day at Fisherman's Paradise in Milford. BHO Fishing Team member Chris Wahl will be on hand demoing gear from Plum Island Swimbaits and Tsunami as well as some of the great fishing kayaks available at Black Hall Outfitters. Several kayaks will be available to test paddle and pedal.
And this weekend also kicks off back-to-back demo weekends at Indian River Marina in Clinton. They will have a ton of great kayaks on hand from Wilderness, Perception and more, and if you are unable to make it out to see them this Saturday or Sunday, you’ll have another chance next weekend as they continue with the festivities.
Connecticut
• We’ve got a lot going on this week across Connecticut. I’ve heard of schools of bunker beginning to spread out in the Sound and some better striped bass are being reported feeding on them – still primarily towards the western end of the Sound. And we also started seeing some slightly better weakfish catches the last few days as expected on the moon. Local kayak angler, Shawn Barham got into a handful of weakies this week with pink JoeBaggsBucktails Patriot Fish doing the damage for him. If you’d like to get in on this overlooked New England fishery, be sure to check out the article in the local section of the New England May monthly issue.
Rhode Island
• The reports of herring and adult bunker keep increasing, and with the full moon this week it should be any day that we hear of the first really large striped bass from Rhode Island waters. The Pawcatuck has bunker and large schoolies to about 34-inch bass, and the salt ponds of South County have bunker and even some squid. Speaking of squid, the bite got much better this past week over in Newport with some anglers reporting filling a 5-gallon bucket in an evening. This is a great opportunity to jig up both some great bait as well as awesome table fare. For a look at how you can get in on this great fishery, check out the article in the May monthly issue of The Fisherman.
Massachusetts
• Well, last week I said that the improving weather and flounder fishing in Boston Harbor should be producing the first limits any day now, and I heard from Capt. Jason Colby of Little Sister Charters that he hit this annual milestone on Monday morning’s open boat trip. The bite was sparked by the usual early-season helpers of bright sun and calm winds, but when conditions changed for the afternoon and went overcast the bite took a turn for the worse. But hey, that’s how it goes early-on and there is still plenty of time to get up to Boston and fish!
Muslim Couple Files Lawsuit Against Connecticut Yacht Club
A Muslim businessman and his wife have filed a lawsuit against a yacht club in the state of Connecticut on allegations that club board members rejected their membership application because of their religion. Kamran Farid, who is the a co-founder the fruit bouquet business Edible Arrangements, and his wife Kara sued the Pine Orchard Yacht & Country Club in the town of Branford in state Superior Court back in August, alleging discrimination, racism and bigotry. They are currently seeking a court order for the club to stop discriminating, as well as undisclosed damages and a suspension of Pine Orchard's permit to sell alcoholic beverages.
