There’s little doubt winemaker Jason Parkes marches to the beat of his own drum but then so does the off-beat, tattooed, back-of-the-house Hatch team who don’t look anything like your typical assistant winemakers. From the day it opened, the west Kelowna winery has been the different one as they pursue a philosophy of diversity, authenticity and individuality that takes them up and down the Okanagan Valley in search of derelict vineyards and high quality fruit. At Hatch headquarters, we catch up with crew to talk about the obvious progress this idiosyncratic, hipster winery is making in an ultra-conservative business and find out what everyone is Yelp-ing about.

Why go to Napa or Napoli when we have a beautiful wine region right in our backyard!? A 4-hour roadtrip or a 1-hour flight and you’re surrounded by beautiful vineyards, lakes and impressive wines. A truly family-run vineyard – from 15 acres to 50! The Martiniuk’s left the craziness of Vancouver and headed out east to open a winery (isn’t that everyone’s dream?) It was a good move, because the Black Sage Bench offers minerals in the ground, unlike any other area – which makes the wine unique and flavorful. Their Pinot Noir is definitely unlike any other and keeps us coming back for more.

Passed down through 8 generations of Schales’ boys (hence the name). The first Schales grape was planted in 1783 – that’s some experience unlike anyone else! They have one of the oldest tasting rooms in the Okanagan that’s a restored farmhouse from the 1940's. It's also one of the only wine shops that ACTUALLY faces the vineyard, which means breath taking views while you sip on their crisp and clean wines.

The only thing better than Dirty Laundry’s Bordello wine (which is virtually impossible to beat), is the story that it actually WAS a bordello. The story goes that a immigrant worker named Sam, quit his job and opened a laundromat. He realized soon after that his customers had needs for other things, like drinks and gambling .and women. Dirty (upstairs) Laundry (downstairs) was born. The original location still stands and they play up on the story, but now surrounded by beautiful vineyards and makes delicious, award-winning wines, making it one of the most fun wineries ever. You can order a picnic and sit on the patio and watch the steam engine go by.

Cabernet Sauvignon (Red Wine) - is one of the world's most widely recognized red wine grape varieties. It is grown in nearly every major wine producing country among a diverse spectrum of climates from Canada's Okanagan Valley to Lebanon's Beqaa Valley. Cabernet Sauvignon became internationally recognized through its prominence in Bordeaux wines where it is often blended with Merlot and Cabernet Franc
Sauvignon - is a green-skinned grape variety which originates from the Bordeaux region of France. The grape most likely gets its name from the French word sauvage (wild) and blanc (white) due to its early origins as an indigenous grape in South West France.[1], a possible descendant of savagnin. Sauvignon blanc is planted in many of the world's wine regions, producing a crisp, dry, and refreshing white varietal wine.
Riesling - is a white grape variety which originated in the Rhine region of Germany. Riesling is an aromatic grape variety displaying flowery, almost perfumed, aromas as well as high acidity. It is used to make dry, semi-sweet, sweet and sparkling white wines.
Merlot - is a darkly blue-coloured wine grape, that is used as both a blending grape and for varietal wines. The name Merlot is thought to derive from the Old French word for young blackbird, merlot, a diminutive of merle, the blackbird (Turdus merula), probably from the color of the grape.
Chardonnay - is a green-skinned grape variety used to make white wine. It originated in the Burgundy wine region of eastern France but is now grown wherever wine is produced, from England to New Zealand. For new and developing wine regions, growing Chardonnay is seen as a rite of passage and an easy entry into the international wine market.[1]

Short weekend road trip to Kelowna from Vancouver BC
We were heading to Kelowna for work and leisure for a weekend in Kelowna. These are highlights of our trip. If you are visiting Kelowna for the first time. Find details of where we stayed and where we went for reference. Kelowna is a small city but a loving one. Winery tour is a must go if you are into wines! If you aren't into wines, you can explore the nature of the city. There are plenty of adventurous activities you can do.
ACCOMMODATION: Coast Capri Hotel Kelowna - Locates near downtown in decent price range. Loved their continental breakfast. They provide complementary pastry and coffee-to-go if you are leaving early in the morning before their breakfast being served.
RESTAURANTS:
Restaurants in Kelowna are overall good. Explore the restaurants on your own and be adventurous on the food. You can basically trust the Google reviews online as they are very close to my ratings.

We went wineries mainly in West Kelowna. Winery tasting fee is waived when you buy wines from these wineries.
Indigenous World Winery - georgeous view from the winery
Volcanic Hills Estate Winery - we love the white wine here and they are in decent price.
Mission Hill - can't miss this winery if you are travelling to Kelowna. Great architecture and beautiful views. The winery tour was amazing too.
Quail's Gate - their restaurant is popular and always packed. Book advance if you want to enjoy wine, food and gorgeous scenery at the same time.
Hainle Vineyards Estate Winery - nice little winery in Peachland. First Ice Wine producer in North America; BC's certified organic winery.
Kangaroo Creek Farm - Ideal for families. Great if you love animals and Kangaroos. We had fun touching them in the farm.
Paul's Tomb Trail - Beginner's level; if you want a short and smooth hike. Try this trail!
