U.S. Marines Arrive in Darwin
U.S. Marines with the Marine Rotational Force - Darwin arrive at Royal Australian Air Force Base for the eight iteration of MRF-D. MRF-D is a tangible demonstration of the sustained commitment to the Australia-U.S. alliance and their combined presence in the Indo-Pacific.

Marine Rotational Force - Darwin
pproximately 1,150 Marines deployed to Darwin, Australia 2014 as the third rotation of Marine Rotational Force – Darwin (MRF-D), remaining for approximately six months. MRF-D engaged in a range of training activities and community relations events with the Australian Defense Force throughout the deployment. The rotational deployment of U.S. Marines affords an excellent combined training opportunity with our Australian allies, and improves interoperability between our forces. U.S. Marines with the Marine Rotational Force - Darwin Aviation Combat Element offload aircraft at Darwin Port for the upcoming MRF-D rotation, Darwin, Australia, April 14, 2019. The aircraft offload is one of many movements that allows MRF-D to be operational during the six-month rotation. The a trans-Pacific flights conducted by Marine Aircraft Group 24 have shrunk the theater significantly, allowing the Marine Corps to aggregate combat force in the western Pacific from Hawaii in a matter of days. US Sends Australian-American Amphibious Force to Western Pacific for Countering China Ambitions
The U.S. and Australia should establish a combined amphibious force including 2,000 Marines and a similar number of sailors based in Darwin, Australia, to build regional support for countering China’s ambitions in the western Pacific, according to a former Marine colonel.
Grant Newsham, now a senior researcher with the Japan Forum for Strategic Studies, Tokyo, said Monday that the Marine Corps, which rotated 2,500 Marines through Darwin during the summer, needs to see Australia as more than just a great place to train.
