Southeast Asia | 20 Day Itinerary: Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam
Full recommended two week itinerary (I highly recommend this after my trip!)
TOP TRAVEL TIPS:
PHI PHI ISLANDS:
*Phi Phi Island are a must, and if you like to party, Captain Bob's is also a must:
*To get to Phi Phi Islands, take a taxi to any of the easter harbors in Phuket, several boats will get you to Phi Phi Islands.
FULL MOON PARTY:
*Full Moon Party Info (get your reservation in early, and buy a white tank top, then have fun!)
*To get to the full moon party, take a flight to Ko Samui, when you get off the flight book a taxi and ferry ride to Haad Rin
*If you are short on time, SKIP northern Thailand! If you have time, then spend time hiking and exploring up there.
BANGKOK:
*Spend minimal time in Bangkok, but do not miss Wat Arun, The Grand Palace, and book a tour to see the famous floating market and the train market:
SIEM REAP:
*Siem Reap is a fun town to stay in with Pub Street which includes lots of bars and restaurants
*Angkor Wat is not to be rushed! You need atleast two full days, and if you're really into it, I would go atleast three days.
HALONG BAY:
*Hanoi is a pretty crazy city, so just know that going in!
*For a fun party cruise with great accomodations, I would recommend Oasis Bay Party Cruise:
-The cruise comes with Transportation from Hanoi, food, a great suit, and some drinks, kayaking, jumping off the boat, and beer yoga. Plus several hot tubs and we had a great group with us.

Hanoi (Vietnamese: Hà Nội, Hán Tự: 河内) pronunciation (help·info), estimated population 6.232.940 (2008) [1], is the capital and second-largest city of Vietnam. From 1010 until 1802, with a few brief interruptions, it was the political centre of an independent Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Huế during the Nguyen Dynasty as the capital of Vietnam, but Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam.
The city is located on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi is located at 21°2′N 105°51′E / 21.033°N 105.85°E / 21.033; 105.85Coordinates: 21°2′N 105°51′E / 21.033°N 105.85°E / 21.033; 105.85, 1760 km (1094 mi) north of Ho Chi Minh City, formerly called Saigon.
On May 29 2008, it was decided that Ha Tay province, Vinh Phuc's Me Linh district and 4 communes of Luong Son district, Hoa Binh is merged into the metropolitan area of Hanoi from August 1 2008[2]. Hanoi's total area increased to 334,470 hectares divided into 29 subdivisions[3] with the new population being 6,232,940[3]. The Hanoi Capital Region (Vietnamese: Vùng Thủ Đô Hà Nội), a metropolitan area covering Hanoi and 6 surrounding provinces under planning will have an area of 13,436 square kilometers with a population of 15 million by 2020[4]. October 2010 will officially mark 1000 years of the establishment of the city.
As the capital of Vietnam for almost a thousand years, Hanoi is considered to be the cultural centre of Vietnam, where every dynasty has left behind their imprint. Even though some relics have not survived through wars and time, the city still has many interesting cultural and historic monuments for visitors and residents alike. Even when the nation's capital moved to Hue under the Nguyen dynasty in 1802, the city of Hanoi continued to flourish, especially after the French took control in 1888 and modeled the city's architecture to their tastes, lending an important aesthetic to the city's rich stylistic heritage. The city boasts more than 1,000 years of history, and that of the past few hundred years has been well preserved.[10]
Hanoi hosts more cultural sites than any city in Vietnam, including over 600 pagodas and temples.[11]
The Old Quarter, near Hoan Kiem lake, has the original street layout and architecture of old Hanoi. At the beginning of the 20th century the city consisted of only about 36 streets, most of which are now part of the old quarter. Each street then had merchants and households specialized in a particular trade, such as silk traders, jewellery, etc. The street names nowadays still reflect these specializations, although few of them remain exclusively in their original commerce. The area is famous for its small artisans and merchants, including many silk shops. Local cuisine specialties as well as several clubs and bars can be found here also. A night market (near Đồng Xuân market) in the heart of the district opens for business every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening with a variety of clothing, souvenirs and food.
Some others prominent places are: The Temple of Literature (Văn Miếu), site of the oldest university in Vietnam 1070; One Pillar Pagoda (Chùa Một Cột); Flag Tower of Hanoi (Cột cờ Hà Nội). In 2004, a massive part of the 900 year old citadel was discovered in central Hanoi, near the site of Ba Dinh square. [12]
A city between the rivers, built from lowland, Hanoi has many scenic lakes and sometime is called city of lakes. Among its lakes, the most famous are Hoan Kiem Lake, West Lake, Halais Lake (Hồ Thiền Quang) in Vietnamese), and Bay Mau Lake. West Lake (Hồ Tây) is a popular place for people to spend time. It is the largest lake in Hanoi and there are many temples in the area. There are small boats for hire and a floating restaurant.
Under French rule, as an administrative centre for the French colony of Indochina, the French colonial architecture style became dominant, many examples remain today: the tree-lined boulevards (e.g. Phan Dinh Phung street), The Grand Opera House, The State Bank of Vietnam (formerly The Bank of Indochina), The Presidential Palace (formerly Place of The Governor-General of French Indochina), the cathédrale St-Joseph, and historic hotel Sofitel Metropole.

Deux pays au bout du monde
Où Salômbo a découvert
La fleur sacrée et ses mystères
Tous les Dieux du Pakistan
Des panthères qui la regardent
Sont les gardiens de son secret
Elle ne pouvait pas savoir
Qu'il ne fallait pas toucher
Et Salômbo au Pakistan
Elle a touché une fleur sacrée
Et elle craque au Pakistan
Elle a trop vu, trop entendu
Deux pays au bout du monde
Des milliers de gens en colère
En perçant les secrets du temple
Elle y déclencha la guerre
Elle a brisé la fleur sacrée
Qu'il ne fallait toucher
D'est en ouest attire ce mystère
Des panthères qui défient la frontière
Et Salômbo au Pakistan
Elle a touché une fleur sacrée
Et elle craque au Pakistan
Elle a tout vu, tout entendu

Tales of Asia IV - Saigon & Hanoi (8 Nov 2015)
Highlights from my talk on Saigon & Phnom Penh, wherein I explained that French Indochina consisted (surprisingly) of six territories, that the Chinese colonised North Vietnam (and Hanoi) for 1000 years, and explored the French Quarter of Saigon (HCMC) and the Old Town of Hanoi. Hanoi, Heart Of Vietnam, Majestic Landscape And Lakes, Tour Of Old Hanoi
Hanoi, Heart Of Vietnam, Majestic Landscape And Lakes, Tour Of Old Hanoi
Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and the country's second largest city. Its population in 2009 was estimated at 2.6 million for urban districts,6.5 million for the metropolitan jurisdiction. From 1010 until 1802, it was the most important political centre of Vietnam. It was eclipsed by Huế during the Nguyen dynasty as the capital of Vietnam, but Hanoi served as the capital of French Indochina from 1902 to 1954. From 1954 to 1976, it was the capital of North Vietnam.
Lying on the eastern part of the Indochinese peninsula, Vietnam is a strip of land shaped like the letter S. China borders it to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, the East Sea to the east and the Pacific Ocean to the east and south.
Hanoi - the heart of Vietnam and the pride of its people, is one unique city. Known for its majestic landscape of lakes, French boulevards and the determination of its residents, Hanoi once is the topic of fantasy and fairytale. Its conservative stance maintains the culture as it once uses to be: the cultivation of thousands of years of history. Yet with all the bustling of the fast-paced life that recent economic growth has brought and indeed changed its new generations.
In the video we will see :
The Old Quarter, near Hoàn Kiếm Lake, has the original street layout and architecture of old Hanoi. At the beginning of the 20th century the city consisted of only about 36 streets, most of which are now part of the old quarter. Each street then had merchants and households specialised in a particular trade, such as silk traders, jewellery, etc. The street names nowadays still reflect these specializations, although few of them remain exclusively in their original commerce.[18] The area is famous for its small artisans and merchants, including many silk shops. Local cuisine specialties as well as several clubs and bars can be found here also. A night market (near Đồng Xuân Market) in the heart of the district opens for business every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday evening with a variety of clothing, souvenirs and food.
Lakes - A city between the rivers, built from lowland, Hanoi has many scenic lakes and it is sometimes called city of lakes. Among its lakes, the most famous are Hoàn Kiếm Lake, West Lake, Halais Lake (Hồ Thiền Quang in Vietnamese), and Bay Mau Lake. Hoan Kiem Lake, also known as Sword Lake, is the historical and cultural center of Hanoi, and is linked to the legend of the magic sword. West Lake (Hồ Tây) is a popular place for people to spend time. It is the largest lake in Hanoi and there are many temples in the area. There are swanboats for hire. The lakeside road in Quang An area is perfect for bicycling, jogging and viewing the cityscape especially in the sunset or enjoying lotus ponds in the summer
Under French rule, as an administrative centre for the French colony of Indochina, the French colonial architecture style became dominant, many examples remain today: the tree-lined boulevards (e.g. Phan Dinh Phung street) and its many villas and mansions, Grand Opera House, State Bank of Vietnam (formerly The Bank of Indochina), Presidential Palace (formerly Palace of the Governor-General of French Indochina), St. Joseph's Cathedral, and the historic Hotel Metropole. Many of the colonial structures are an eclectic mixture of French and traditional Vietnamese architectural styles, such as the National Museum of Vietnamese History, the Vietnam National Museum of Fine Arts and the old Indochina Medical College. Gouveneur-Général Paul Doumer (1898-1902) played a crucial in colonial Hanoi's urban planning. Under his tenure there was a major construction boom.
Hope you have enjoyed as much as I have
Have a nice day.
