BACKGROUND INFO:
During the month of November, the Thai people celebrate Loy Krathong and in Chiang Mai that holiday coincides with the celebration of the Yi Peng Festival (Festival of Lights) where lanterns are released as offerings. Below is an excerpt from Indochina Odyssey Tours on the background of Loy Krathong:
---
Krathong is a Thai term which refers to a piece of banana trunk decorated with flowers, banana leaves, candle and incense sticks. The word Loy means to float in the Thai language. When put together, those two terms simply mean floating banana trunk festival. Modern krathongs are mostly made out of bread or Styrofoam. But Styrofoam krathongs are sometimes not allowed as they pollute the water and they are difficult to decompose. Bread Krathongs are more environmentally friendly as they are biodegradable and in most cases eaten by fish.
Why do Thai people want to float a krathong? There are many stories regarding how the festival originated. One of the versions is that Thai people have long been closely involved with rivers for ages as Thailand is an agriculture based country. This means rivers are like their own blood veins. And to show respect to the river, basically the goddess of the river called Pra Mae Khongkha, Thai people decided to make a Krathong to worship and ask for forgiveness. The Thais now also see it as a time to wave goodbye to misfortune, wash away sins of the past year, and make wishes for the coming year.
....
Chiang Mai is where Loy Krathong meets Yi Peng, a lantern festival celebrated alongside Loy Krathong. As the largest city in northern Thailand, Chai Mai is known for its flying lanterns rather than its floating offerings. People who visit Chiang Mai during the few days of the festival can also enjoy some of the city's most incredible parades, firework display and traditional art performances in public places.

South East Asia Tour 2016
My tour around SE Asia with Tucan Travel
Soaked Girls - Mae Hong Son. (543km ride!)
..it was only supposed to be a 150km ride to Omkoi, but ended up being an impromptu ride to Mae Hong Son, through the twisty mountain hills of Hot, then up to Mae Chaem through to Khun Yuam.
We arrived at Khun Yuam, a town which nether of us really fancied staying in, and despite the light fading and rainfall starting to come down, we figured what the hell! Surely it wont be so bad...
Haha..famous last words, because we ended up riding 85km in the rain, which turned TORRENTIAL. This slowed us down, so we ended up riding in the dark for a significant portion of the end of the journey.
The road was streaming and lots of glare from lights. Risk of aquaplaning.
Was certainly MUCH worse than we anticipated..lol..but well.... never mind! ^^
Oh..and I sound SO BOSSY in this video..my poor friend Sam haha! Forgive me Sam, I was just so very tired!

Siam is an exonym that was formerly used as the name of Thailand, especially Central, Eastern, Western, and Southern Thailand (except the provinces Pattani, Yala, and Narathiwat).
Thailand (/ˈtaɪlænd/ ty-land or /ˈtaɪlənd/ ty-lənd;[12] Thai: ประเทศไทย, rtgs: Prathet Thai), officially the Kingdom of Thailand (Thai: ราชอาณาจักรไทย, rtgs: Ratcha Anachak Thai; IPA: [râːt.tɕʰā ʔāːnāːtɕàk tʰāj] ( listen)), formerly known as Siam (Thai: สยาม; rtgs: Sayam), is a country at the centre of the Indochina peninsula in Southeast Asia. It is bordered to the north by Burma and Laos, to the east by Laos and Cambodia, to the south by the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia, and to the west by the Andaman Sea and the southern extremity of Burma. Its maritime boundaries include Vietnam in the Gulf of Thailand to the southeast, and Indonesia and India on the Andaman Sea to the southwest.
Thailand is a monarchy headed by King Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX, and governed by a military junta that took power in May 2014. The king is the ninth of the House of Chakri, and has reigned since 1946 as the world's longest-serving current head of state and the country's longest-reigning monarch. The King of Thailand's titles include Head of State, Head of the Armed Forces, Adherent of Buddhism, and Upholder of religions.

2014 Snowy Ride Tour & Trip to Thailand - Episode 2
In Oct/Nov 2014 we toured the Australian east coast to participate in the Snowy Ride, a fundraising ride for the Steve Walters Cancer Foundation. (Though we didn't actually intent to go in the official ride, which ended up being cancelled due to the weather anyway). A work trip Thailand rudely interrupted my holiday, but I dragged Shelley along with me for a week in a top resort in Phuket while I was working.
Baan Sukhawadee, 219 Moo 2 Sukhumvit road, Bang Lamung district, Chon Buri Province. ( 10 )
There is an imposing building along the Sukhumvit road near Phatthaya 10 road. I have passed this building many times travelling into and out of Pattaya. I wondered what it could be for many years, yet never went. At first I thought it was an unusual Temple. However it was not, it turned out to be the home of the largest chicken breeder in Thailand. Baan Sukhawadee or Eden House is owned by Dr. Panya Chotitawan, who owns Saha Farms in Thailand. Saha Farm used to have 30,000 employees. However the number has reduced substantially to about half after the company experienced serious financial problems.
The state owned and run Krung Thai Bank, has agreed in theory to advance about 1,000 million Baht as a helping hand ~ loan for the troubled Saha Farm agro giant to boost its liquidity so that it will be able to carry on with its business. Saha Farms, throughout its 42 year of operation has produced quality frozen chicken products with cleanliness and responsibility to all its customers. They are the largest exporters of chicken products to places like Japan, England, Germany, China, Netherlands and Belgium. Much of the stock is reared and bred using the Cobb U.S. breed, which is considered a good type of bird that gives the highest meat yield and are used as Grandparent stock at their breeding farms in Petchabun Province, in Northern Thailand, commonly called Issan.
Baan Sukhawadee can be found at 219 Moo 2 Sukhumvit road, Bang Lamung district in Chon Buri Province. The house is built in beautifully serene grounds it’s just everything else that’s loud, but in a nice way. Various statues, Images and other sculptures can be found here, for example ~ Lord Buddha at birth Image, the Goddess of Mercy, King Taksin the Great, King Chulalongkorn the Great, who was known as Rama V, he was the fifth monarch of Siam under the House of Chakri. He was known to the Siamese of his time as Phra Phuttha Chao Luang. He is considered one of the greatest kings of Siam. ( Now Thailand ) . His reign was characterized by the modernization of Siam, immense government and social reforms, and territorial cessions to the British Empire and French Indochina. Also a statue of Krom Luang Chumphon Khet Udomsak, the father of the Royal Thai Navy also known as Admiral Prince Krom Luang Chumporn Khet Udomsak was the first member of the Thai royal family to graduate in naval education Having spent his early years studying Naval warfare in England. He was the commanding officer of HTMS Phra Ruang that sailed from Britain to Bangkok.
Baan Sukhawadee is a mansion, function centre, come theme park. It provides a look into the life of a wealthy Thai family. Inside it has a collection of Thai, Greek, Roman, Classical European, Buddhist, Catholic, Hindu, Muslim and Hollywood architecture, art sculpture, and unusual objet d'art. It is an iconic museum to all that is beautiful. The public can visit during opening hours and the charges are:~

SUMMARY
=======
Yunnan (云南) is a province of the People's Republic of China, located in the far southwest of the country. It spans approximately 394,000 square kilometres (152,000 sq mi) and has a population of 45.7 million (as of 2009). The capital of the province is Kunming, formerly also known as Yunnan. The province borders the Chinese provinces Guangxi, Guizhou, Sichuan, and the Tibet Autonomous Region, and the countries Vietnam, Laos, and Myanmar.
Yunnan is situated in a mountainous area, with high elevations in the northwest and low elevations in the southeast. Most of the population lives in the eastern part of the province. In the west, the altitude can vary from the mountain peaks to river valleys as much as 3,000 metres (9,800 ft). Yunnan is rich in natural resources and has the largest diversity of plant life in China. Of the approximately 30,000 species of higher plants in China, Yunnan has perhaps 17,000 or more. Yunnan's reserves of aluminium, lead, zinc and tin are the largest in China, and there are also major reserves of copper and nickel.
The Han Empire first recorded diplomatic relations with the province at the end of the 2nd century BC. It became the seat of a Sino-Tibetan-speaking kingdom of Nanzhao in the 8th century AD. Nanzhao was multi-ethnic, but the elite most-likely spoke a northern dialect of Yi. The Mongols conquered the region in the 13th century, with local control exercised by warlords until the 1930s. From the Yuan dynasty onward, the area was part of a central-government sponsored population movement towards the southwestern frontier, with two major waves of migrants arriving from Han-majority areas in northern and southeast China. As with other parts of China's southwest, Japanese occupation in the north during World War II forced another migration of majority Han people into the region. These two waves of migration contributed to Yunnan being one of the most ethnically diverse provinces of China, with ethnic minorities accounting for about 34 percent of its total population. Major ethnic groups include Yi, Bai, Hani, Zhuang, Dai and Miao.

Bangkok is the capital and the most populous city of Thailand. It is known in Thai as Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. The city occupies 1,568.7 square kilometres (605.7 sq mi) in the Chao Phraya River delta in Central Thailand, and has a population of over eight million, or 12.6 percent of the country's population. Over fourteen million people (22.2 percent) live within the surrounding Bangkok Metropolitan Region, making Bangkok an extreme primate city, dwarfing Thailand's other urban centres in terms of importance.
Bangkok traces its roots to a small trading post during the Ayutthaya Kingdom in the 15th century, which eventually grew in size and became the site of two capital cities: Thonburi in 1768 and Rattanakosin in 1782. Bangkok was at the heart of Siam's (as Thailand used to be known) modernization during the later nineteenth century, as the country faced pressures from the West. The city was the centre stage of Thailand's political struggles throughout the twentieth century, as the country abolished absolute monarchy, adopted constitutional rule and underwent numerous coups and uprisings. The city grew rapidly during the 1960s through the 1980s and now exerts a significant impact among Thailand's politics, economy, education, media and modern society.
