White water rafting in Hazyview
Hannah St Paul: Our first mistake? Andrew and I should never have worn wetsuits while white water rafting. It was bloody hot! Philemon Mothata of Induna Adventures in Hazyview gave us lifejackets and helmets, so we were quite sweaty under all that gear! Philemon was super helpful -- he guided us through each rapid, which actually weren't that scary as the river was seasonally low from lack of rainfall. If it weren't for his navigational tips, we definitely would've capsized the canoe. Let's just say Andy wasn't the best steerer! It almost felt as though we could've been on the Amazon because it was so lush. At one point we floated through a cloud of white butterflies which was an unforgettable experience!

Welcome to the Republic - Whitewater Kayaking, Northern & Central South Africa

By Welcome to the Republic, what I'm actually saying is welcome to the community. It's been exactly a year since I did my first trip with the guys & girls from the Whitewater Republic, and it has been testament to the fact that time flies when you're having fun.
Making full use of a water release for a K1 race, we made our way down to Montrose Waterfall on the Crocodile River in Mpumalanga. With the Crocodile being at a perfect level, it was a great opportunity for beginners and experienced boaters to get on the water for the first time this season.
After the morning of hucking, we made our way to Dantes Inferno on the Elands River for some more of the same. With the level of the Elands being on the low side, we had a quick scout. Even at this level most paddlers ended up running back to their cars, not able to contain their excitement for Double-D and Dantes Waterfall. What a day of paddling it turned out to be. Smokes. The great weather, schweet lines and perfect day of paddling made for some awesome stories at Tanks Bush Pub. On a bit of a side note; if you ever find yourself near Sabie or Hazyview, and you want to have some of the best burgers north of Cape Town, make sure to go to Tanks. I doubt that you'll find a better burger around there.
We ran the U@ section of the Sabie River on the Sunday. The flows were low, but it still made for some good fun in our playboats. It was the first time on the Sabie for many of the paddlers, and it was great to see the massive smiles on their faces, as I had exactly the same experience a year earlier on the Sabie.
The video is not in the order that we paddled the rivers. it starts off with Montrose Waterfall on the Crocodile River. Which is followed by some action from Double Drop on the U2 section of the Sabie River. It ends off with Double D and Dante's Inferno on the Elands River. For more footage of Dante's Inferno at a bit of a higher level, check out my video of an earlier trip:
