Most Beautiful but Hidden Village in Japan - Ine no funaya | MerRyan North Kyoto Guide 伊根の舟屋
* added subtitles for those who have difficulties understanding MerRyan's accent and voice!
Ine 伊根 is a town located in northern Kyoto Prefecture. It has a long and rich history as a fishing village and is one of the most beautiful village in Japan.
Ine is famous for the funaya 舟屋, or boathouses. It is a traditional fishing town and the seafood is very fresh and affordable. Some of the boathouses are lodgings which guests can arrange to stay in. The town is picturesque from many angles and popular among Japanese and tourists.
MerRyan visited Ine Cafe for lunch and cakes, and it is very tasty and affordable. Definitely a recommendation - even by the locals!

伊根の舟屋 : The funaya of Ine - Kyoto by the Sea (BMPCC4K and MAVIC 2 PRO)
伊根の舟屋へ撮影に行ってまいりました。平日にもかかわらず観光客でにぎわっておりましたが、潮風と海鳥に波の音のおかげなのか、にぎやかさの中にも風情がありました。
The unique Ine buildings which have existed since the 1700s were at first storage houses for wooden boats built for hanging up fishing nets. The current funaya were repaired along with the change of the times, the first floor is a combined boat garage and workspace for fishermen, and the second floor is used as a living area. Even now 230 houses stand in a row along the 5km length of the bay. The first funaya that were built were thatched roof wooden houses without a living space on the second floor, created to function as boathouses. At present, most funaya are wooden 2 floor buildings, and the second floor room is used as a guest room, or as living quarters for younger generation family members. There are also funaya which have been renovated as accommodation. The main houses are often found on the mountain side across the road, and this is where the everyday lifestyle is based. In addition to being in co-existence with the sea, Funaya also fulfill functional roles, and can be used for preparation of fish for cooking, making dried fish, and for carrying out fishing work activities while sheltering from wind and rain.

Absolutely Beautiful Funaya Boat Houses of the Ine Fishing Village in Japan (伊根)
Ine (伊根) a fishing village in northern Kyoto and not too far from Amanohashidate, is world famous for its Funaya — literally translating to boat house. Approximately 230 of these wooden boat houses still stand today lining the Ine Bay. The Funaya have a garage for boat and living spaces on the upper floors.
Talia and I explore Ine on a tour boat where we get to feed the seagulls and other boats while enjoying the beautiful view of the Funaya along the bay.

Fantastic Places in Cool Japan :
The lagoon city of Venice, where gondolas come and go around the city. Do you know Ine-cho in Kyoto, which has become a hot topic overseas that resembles the scene? It is called “Venice of Japan”, and if you go to an area with its own traditional buildings, it will be a different world. You can forget your daily life and enjoy the old Japanese scenery.
Ine-cho Town is located in the northeastern part of Tango Peninsula, Kyoto Prefecture, and is famous for its beautiful boathouse floating on the sea. The scenery is likened to Venice in Italy.

Ineno Funaya (Ine Town) is an hour's local bus ride from Amanohashidate Station.
Also widely known as the Venice of Japan, this fishing village is famous due to its unique boathouse residences. A 25min cruise in the bay gives a great overall view of the boathouses.

Amanohashidate Road Trip // 天橋立
I took my mum to Amanohashidate for her birthday! We went in the off season so it was really quiet and we basically had the whole town to ourselves! I highly recommend going if you want to see a less touristy side of Kyoto!
