Thangasseri Lighthouse
The lighthouse is located on the coast at Tangasseri in Kollam city and is the one of the locations in India that still maintains Anglo-Indian culture. Tangasseri is home to remnants of an ancient Portuguese built coastal defence, the St Thomas Fort, a Portuguese Cemetery, a canal, the ancient Port of Quilon and the Infant Jesus Cathedral.
Visitors are allowed access to the lighthouse between 11 am and 5 pm on all days except on Mondays

A merry Christmas journey with the Asianet News Santa Claus starting from the freezing Arctic Circle to the warmth of tropical Kerala, spreading the message of love and brotherhood.
The Asianet News Santa Claus team started their long journey from the office of Santa Claus in Finland, Arctic Circle and then on to the Vatican City, where our efforts were blessed by Pope Benedict XVI. From Vatican City to Germany (Dusseldorf, Frankfurt) and then on to the United Arab Emirates (Dubai. Abu Dhabi, Sharjah), before touching down at Kerala. Back home, we travelled to various districts in Kerala spreading the Christmas spirit. The joureny culminated at Kochi on Christmas Eve.

In 1502, the Portuguese were the first Europeans to establish a trading centre in Tangasseri and the area soon became a major centre for the pepper trade. Tangasseri's St Thomas Fort, built by the Portuguese in 1517, was destroyed in the subsequent wars with the Dutch.
In 1661, the Dutch took possession of the city. The remains of both the Dutch and Portuguese forts can still be seen in Tangasseri. In the 18th century, the kingdom of Travancore first conquered Kollam, followed by the British in 1795. Tangasseri remains an Anglo-Indian settlement in character, though there are few Anglo-Indians in the population. The Infant Jesus Cathedral in Tangasseri an old Portuguese-built church, remains as a memento of Portuguese rule. The old cathedral was demolished and replaced by a new cathedral at a cost of around ₹4.5 crore. it was consecrated and blessed on 3 December 2005. The metallic cross on the top is one of the largest crosses in India.
