Riva del Garda, Italy
The beautiful towns of Riva del Garda and Torbole lay at the Northern corner of the Garda Lake. On that splendid summer day they looked like heaven on earth.

Riva del Garda is a resort in northern Italy, on Lake Garda’s northern shore. Strong winds make it a popular windsurfing destination. In a former fortress, MAG Museo Alto Garda has archaeology and history displays, plus a picture gallery with works from the 15th to 19th centuries. Nearby, the medieval Torre Apponale belfry offers lake views. Santa Maria Inviolata is a baroque church with frescoes and stucco works. Riva del Garda is a bustling Italian town which doubles as a tourist resort, located at the northern end of Lake Garda. This is the dramatic end of the lake, with mountains rising on either side, and Riva sits comfortably on the shore, with a backdrop of lake, valley and hills. Until the lakeside road was constructed, Riva was an important port for communications along the lake's length.
Riva has a town museum (Museo Civico) housed in its moated lakeshore castle (or fortress), the Rocca. The museum contains historical exhibits, paintings and also temporary exhibitions, which can be interesting. Alongside this sturdy fortress is a pleasant leafy park. A little tourist 'train' (trenino) starts here and does a very brief circuit of the town for those seeking more entertainment (it was full of merry pensioners when it passed). One of Riva's most striking buildings is the Torre Apponale, a tall clock-tower which dates to the thirteenth century. It looks down on Piazza III Novembre, the heart of town.
The northern end of the lake is incredibly popular with windsurfers, who take advantage of the strong wind systems caused by the mountains and water. Torbole, just along the lakeshore from Riva, is the principal base for windsurfing. In Riva it is possible to hire boats, or, for a less strenuous way of enjoying the water, there is a long beach suitable for sunbathing and swimming. Walkers can enjoy easy walks around town - such as the stroll along the lake towards Torbole - or longer hikes in the mountains around.
The Museo Civico is located in the Rocca, a medieval fortress with quadrangular bastions, placed on the lake, bounded by a canal with drawbridge. It was the fortress of the noble family Scaligeri (1124), who became the Lords of Verona. It was rebuilt several times and it was used by the Austrians as barracks in the 18th century. It is frequently the seat of cultural activities, especially during the summer months. The medieval Torre Apponale was is a medieval tower first mentioned in 1273, but probably older. It belonged to the first fortress of Riva, that no longer exists. Modifications were made in 1555 and it was raised to 34 metres (112 ft). The Piazza III Novembre is situated between the tower and the harbour. The city hall comprises the Palazzo Pretorio from 1375 (the former cantonal courthouse) and the Palazzo del Provveditore (the governor's palace), built between 1472 and 1485.
The city gates Porta San Marco (11th century), built by the Venetians, and Porta San Michele (13th century), at the Piazza Cavour, are remnants of the medieval city walls. The Porta San Michele has a small battlemented belfry for the parochial church of Maria Assunta. This church was originally a romanesque-gothic building from the 14th century (attested by a medieval relief at its southern side), but was rebuilt in baroque style in 1728. It has a single nave and nine baroque altars. The altarpieces were made by local artists, such as Ignazio Martino Oliari da Riva, Giuseppe Craffonara da Riva and Giovanni Caliari da Verona. The fresco in the dome is by the baroque painter Giuseppe Alberti (1664–1730).
The church Chiesa dell'Inviolata, dominating the Largo Marconi, is considered among the most beautiful baroque churches in Trentino. It is an octagonal building with the belfry next to it. It contains the altarpieces San Carlo Borromeo and San Gerolamo by the Mannerist painter Palma il Giovane. In the middle of the octagonal dome is a Baroque fresco The coronation of Maria in Heaven. Places of geological interest in the vicinity include Tenno Lake, Lago di Ledro (with its paleoethnographic museum), and the Varone falls.

Walking around Riva del Garda, Italy
ITALY, EXPLORING spectacular LAKE GARDA and the historic VENETIAN TOWN of RIVA
SUBSCRIBE: - Let's visit the spectacular Lake Garda which is the largest lake in Italy. It is a popular holiday location and is located in northern Italy, about halfway between Brescia and Verona, and between Venezia and Milano. Glaciers formed this alpine region at the end of the last Ice Age. The lake and its shoreline are divided between the provinces of Verona (to the south-east), Brescia (south-west), and Trentino (north). The name Garda, which the lake has been seen referred to in documents dating to the eighth century, comes from the town of the same name. It is the evolution of the Germanic word warda, meaning place of guard or place of observation.
We will visit Riva del Garda which is located at the north-western corner of Lake Garda, approximately 70 metres (230 feet) above sea level. The town is located at the southern edge of the Italian Alps, near the Dolomites. It is bordered by Monte Rocchetta to the west and Monte Brione, 376 metres (1,234 ft) above sea level, to the east. East of Riva del Garda is the village Torbole, bordered by Monte Baldo.
Riva del Garda belonged to the Republic of Venice, the Bishopric of Trent, the Napoleonic Kingdom of Italy and later (1815–1918) to the Austro-Hungarian empire. During the Third Italian War of Independence, Riva del Garda was an important supply base for the Austrian navy and was only town on the lake to be taken by Italian forces. Since the end of World War I (3 November 1918), Riva del Garda, with the rest of the Trentino, became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
Italy, a European country with a long Mediterranean coastline, has left a powerful mark on Western culture and cuisine. Its capital, Rome, is home to the Vatican as well as landmark art and ancient ruins. Other major cities include Florence, with Renaissance masterpieces such as Michelangelo’s David and Brunelleschi's Duomo; Venice, the city of canals; and Milan, Italy’s fashion capital.

Review of our Riva Del Garda, Travel Department Holiday
On the 12th July 2016 we flew from Dublin To Verona with excellent Aer Lingus to join the Travel Department for a week's Italian holiday based at Riva in the Hotel Brione.
We firmly believe that we had the winning tour guide duo in the, 5 star Tour Guide Renata (Mary Poppins ) and 'Super Mario' our coach driver. What the witty and wonderful Renata didn't know about Italy in general and each trip's specific locations wasn't worth knowing. Mario's driving skills were beyond belief. What a team!
We stayed in the very comfortable and pleasant 3 Star Hotel Brione, right on Riva's main 'happening', street and only a short dander from the waters of Lake Garda. Everthing was very good and having the hotel swimming pool close by was very much appreciated especially after a long day in Venice.
Travel Department leave no stone unturned to make it a very full interesting and enjoyable holiday for all. They take the worry and stress out of organising outings for the holiday maker. All that is required is for you to turn up at the right place at the right time. Even I can manage this. Brilliant!
Riva is an excellent base of operations for the traveller who wants to see the sights and learn the history or this north Italy region. We visited Venice and Verona and took the waterbus to Lemone and Malcesine on lake Garda. On one of our free days we managed to climb up to the tiny white Santa Barbara Catholic church which looks down on Riva from 625m. The views were amazing. We were well pleased with ourselves! Naturally I videoed our climb and the Lillipudian landscape below when we made it up. On top of this Renata had yet another extra fascinating trip ready for us choose,- a spectacular drive into the scenic and off the beaten track, low Alps. At an extra E35, meal included, this trip is not to be missed.
Riva has so much to offer. Cycling, walking, swimming, bird watching, mountain climbing, motorbiking. There are all manner of water sports to sample or maybe you are happy simply soaking up the sun with a good book. Whatever you want this is a great place to do it. Travel Department make it all so easy. At the end of the holiday you can't quite believe just how much you have done and seen -and the craic on the bus is mighty.
Lake Garda, Italy in Winter. Aerial 4K Drone Video of the famous lake
Website:
Watch it in 5K!
Lake Garda (Lago di Garda) is located in the northern Italy, is known for its crystal clear waters. At the south end, the town of Sirmione is dominated by the Rocca Scaligera, a fortress with harbor views. The nearby Grotte di Catullo archaeological site includes a Roman villa. On the lake's western shore, in Gardone Riviera, is Il Vittoriale degli Italiani, former home of poet d’Annunzio. The Dolomites frame Riva del Garda, a resort in the north. This aerial drone video was shot in 6K resolution is Winter on a sunny, but foggy day. Some footage was filmed on the Lombardy West side, near Limone sul Garda on the way to Tremosine, other part were filmed on the East Veneto side near Castello.
Poets and politicians, divas and dictators, they've all been drawn to captivating Lake Garda (Lago di Garda). In fact, 7% of all tourists to Italy head for the lake’s shores, taking to its wind-ruffled waters in the north and village- and vineyard-hopping in the south. Surrounded by three distinct regions – Lombardy, Trentino Alto-Adige and the Veneto – the lake’s cultural diversity attracts a cosmopolitan crowd. Mitteleuropeans colonise northern resorts such as Riva del Garda and Torbole, where restaurants serve air-dried ham and Austrian-style carne salada (salted beef), while in the south, French and Italian families bed down in Valtenesi farmhouses and family-friendly spa towns such as Sirmione and Bardolino.
