Late Baroque Towns of the Val di Noto Sicily Italy - UNESCO World Heritage Site
Ferries to Sicily:
The Val di Noto owes its fame to the reconstruction which underwent after the year 1693, when the entire area was decimated by an enormous earthquake. The destruction that the earthquake caused was so enormous that it was decided to rebuild many towns on entirely new sites, such as the towns of Noto and Grammichele. The rulers of the time, the kings of Spain, accounted the Duke of Camastra with special powers, which allowed him to redesign the wounded towns based on rational and scenographic town plans.
In fact, since the beginning of the Renaissance, architects had the dream to build an entirely new ideal city, where town planning follows rational design and street and building are organized by functionality and beauty. However only a very small part of their projects were really used, and most of them were limited to the reorganization of a street, like the Strada Nuova in Florence or the redesign of small villages, like the town of Pienza.
The earthquake gave the architects the chance to carry out those plans on a large scale. these new towns and cities were therefore redesigned according to renaissance and baroque town planning, with streets crossing each other either with a right angle or starting from major urban sites like squares with a radial pattern. Major buildings like churches, cloisters and palaces were built so that to give the streets a focal point and a majestic perspective. Many times these towns had a distinct shape, like the town of Grammichele which is based on a hexagon whose centre is the town square, provided of the parish and town hall.
Another feature is the homogeneity with which these towns were built, as the late baroque style developed in Sicily was extensively used in the rebuilding.
The area's towns were rebuilt in what came to be known as the Sicilian Baroque style; most notable the town of Noto itself, which is now a tourist attraction on account of its fine Baroque architecture.
The ancient town of Akrai (Palazzolo Acreide) was founded in 664 BCE: it was the first colony of the Corinthian settlement at Syracuse. The Syracusans were currently expanding their power over the Sicilian interior. Little recorded the ruined town was rediscovered by the historian Tommaso Fazello at the end of 16th century. Further excavations in the early 19th century by Baron Gabriele Iudica, unearthed important facts concerning the early history of eastern Sicily.
In June 2002, UNESCO inscribed eight old towns of the Val di Noto on the World Heritage List as representing the culmination and final flowering of Baroque art in Europe [1]. The listed towns are Caltagirone, Militello in Val di Catania, Catania, Modica, Noto, Palazzolo Acreide, Ragusa, a

Noto (Latin: Neetum and Netum; Notu in Sicilian, Nuotu in the local dialect) is a city in the Province of Syracuse, Sicily (Italy).
Its located 32 km southwest of the city of Syracuse at the foot of the Iblean Mountains and gives its name to the surrounding valley, Val di Noto.
In 2002 Noto and its church were declared a UNESCO World Heritage. The older town, Noto Antica, lies 8 km directly north on Mount Alveria.
It was ancient Netum, a city of Sicel origin, left to Hiero II by the Romans by the treaty of 263 BCE and mentioned by Cicero as a foederala citilas (Verr. v. 51, 133), and by Pliny as Latinae conditionis (Hist. Nat. iii. 8. 14). According to legend, Dedalus stopped here after his flight over the Ionian Sea, as well as Hercules, after his seventh task.

In the Roman era, it opposed praetor Verres. In 866 it was conquered by the Arabs, who elevated to a capital city of one of three districts of the island (the Val di Noto). Later it was a rich Norman city.
In the 16th and 17th centuries, the city brought forth several notable intellectual figures, including Giovanni Aurispa, jurists Andrea Barbazio and Antonio Corsetto, as well as the architect Matteo Carnelivari: in 1503 king Ferdinand III gave it the title of civitas ingeniosa (ingenious city). In the following centuries, the city expanded enlarging its medieval limits; and new buildings, churches and convents were built. These, however, were all totally destroyed by the earthquake of January 11, 1693. The devastation of the city on Mount Alveria was accompanied by its economy, which relied mainly on agricultural products vine, oil, cereals, rice, cotton and its renowned handicrafts.
The current town, rebuilt after the earthquake on the left bank of River Asinaro, was planned on a grid system by Giovanni Battista Landolina. This new city occupied a position nearer to the Ionian Sea. The presence of architects like Rosario Gagliardi, Francesco Sortino and others, made the new Noto a masterpiece of Sicilian Baroque, dubbed the Stone Garden by Cesare Brandi and is currently listed among UNESCO's World Heritage Sites. The new structures are characterized by a soft tufa stone, which under sunlight assumes a typical honey tonality.
The city, which had lost its provincial capital status in 1817, rebelled against the House of Bourbon on May 16, 1860, leaving its gates open to Giuseppe Garibaldi and his expedition. Five months later, on October 21, a plebiscite sealed the annexation of Noto to Piedmont.
In 1844, Noto was named a bishopric seat, but in 1866 suffered the abolition of the religious guilds, which were deeply linked to the city's structures and buildings.
Noto was freed from fascist dictatorship in July 1943. At the referendum of 1946, the Notinesi people voted in favour of the monarchy.
Val di Noto (English: Vallum of Noto[1]) is a geographical area of south east Sicily; it is dominated by the limestone Iblean plateau. In 1693 the entire area was decimated by an enormous earthquake. The area's towns were rebuilt in what came to be known as the Sicilian Baroque style; most notable the town of Noto itself, which is now a tourist attraction on account of its fine Baroque architecture.

Places to see in ( Noto - Italy ) Riserva Naturale di Vendicari
The Nature Reserve oriented Vendicari Oasis is located in the province of Siracusa precisely between Noto and Marzamemi . Particularly important for the presence of marshes that act as a resting place for bird migration . Provided by a law of the Sicily Region of May 1981 , it was officially established in 1984 , after the then Minister of Agriculture and Forestry Filippo Maria Pandolfi declared 1450 hectares of territory wetland of international importance, according to theRamsar Convention of 1971 . It was actually made available only in 1989 . It is managed by the Regional Forests Company.
Inside the Reserve human history shows a long permanence. There are several archaeological and architectural settlements that testify to human life in these places since the Greek era. In fact, it is possible to find traces of deposit tanks of an ancient Hellenistic fish processing factory, next to which a small necropolis has also been discovered .
In the Byzantine era (until the 6th century AD) the area was inhabited in the south with the presence of a church, several catacombs and houses. The dangerousness of the coasts induced the inhabitants to abandon the site for internal areas such as Pantalica. The Sveva Tower , probably built by Pietro d'Aragona, count of Alburquerque and duke of Noto ( 1406 - 1438 ), as well as brother of Alfonso V of Aragon , king of Spain and Sicily ( 1416 - 1458 ) testifies the strategic interest of the area for the defense of the coast.
The Vendicari Reserve covers about 1512 hectares, of which 575 in zone A and 937 in zone B (the so-called pre-reserve), in turn divided into zone B1, dedicated to agriculture (citrus groves, olive groves, vineyards and vegetable gardens repaired by tomboli di sabbia or roccia) for 701 hectares, and B2, dedicated, for the remaining part, to facilities for tourism and sport. It is located in a narrow swampy coastal strip, of fundamental importance for migratory bird species . In fact, the presence of the vast marshes of high salinity has contributed to the creation of an ecosystem that is a reference point for birds coming from Africa (350 km away).around as the crow flies), they stop here before reaching the migratory destinations throughout Europe . Indeed, the reserve area is at a lower latitude than Tunis .
The Pantani Piccolo, Grande, Roveto and the two minors (Sichilli and Scirbia, connected to the only Roveto) are separated from each other only by a few tens of meters: they are the fulcrum of the reserve. Among the three, only the Pantano Piccolo never dry up, even in periods of drought, and this thanks to the presence of brackish water sources. Pantano Roveto, on the other hand, is the largest (1.24 km² ) and the mouth that connects it to the sea is usually buried. The average depth of the three main pantani is 30-40 cm , while the maximum is 1-2 m .
There are four accesses to the reserve: one in the Eloro area (the most northerly), one in the Calamosche area , the main entrance at the Sveva Tower and, finally, that of Cittadella dei Maccari (seat of the Byzantine settlement of which remains a temple and the necropolis). The reserve is full of beaches : to the north , Eloro , with Marianelli beach , Calamosche , Vendicari beach (near the tonnara) and south San Lorenzo beach .

Promo Mosaici del Tellaro by Ficurinia

Planeta - A journey through Sicily - short
PLANETA
FOR EACH TERROIR, ITS OWN WINERY
Established in 1995, Planeta is a Sicilian wine producer built on a long agricultural tradition handed down since 1500 through 17 generations in the area between Sambuca di Sicilia and Menfi. Today Planeta represents not just one, but six ways of developing the territory, in six different settings.
There are, in fact, six Planeta wine producing estates, each one with a specific research and development project.
Ulmo at Sambuca di Sicilia, Dispensa at Menfi, Dorilli at Vittoria, Buonivini at Noto, Sciara Nuova at Etna in Castiglione di Sicilia, and finally, La Baronia at Capo Milazzo. These are the Planeta locations, comprising a total surface area of more than 350 hectares of vineyards.
Through its family properties, Planeta can conduct a virtual journey around Sicily and its greatest wines.
The stages are up-to-date and innovative yet consistent with a historical and ritualistic interpretation that elsewhere has almost been forgotten.
Planeta's project calls for patient and meticulous research, never hurried, and looks just as much to the past as to the future. On the one hand, a deep bond with the oldest wine-making Sicilian tradition, with its heritage of native varieties: Grecanico, Carricante, Moscato di Noto, Frappato, Nerello Mascalese and Nero d'Avola. On the other, the arena in which the greatest producers of the five continents are appraised for Chardonnay, Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet: magnificent classics of international enology interpreted by a territory which puts its unmistakable mark on them. It is paramount to remember the most inspired and visionary varietal experimentation: it has resulted in obtaining for the first time in Sicily a Fiano with truly revolutionary features.
And then, that unique green gold, the Planetas' other passion: extra virgin olive oil produced in the natural oasis of Capparrina, near the beaches of Menfi.
The company's activity has one absolutely essential point of reference: environmental sustainability, achieved through landscape conservation, renewable energy, recycled materials and sustainable agriculture, with the utmost respect for the territory, cultural heritage and the communities within which the company operates.
Alessio, Francesca and Santi Planeta gave life to this project, but behind them they have the whole family, rooted in the reality of Sicilian agriculture for generations, beginning with Diego Planeta, considered the leading figure in the rebirth of the Sicilian wine industry in the last forty years. A brand, a family, that has aimed at ambitious goals, following the lode-star of quality.

Trapani, Sicily - April 2017
A longer-than-usual video showing clips of our visit to the island of Sicily, where we stayed for just a couple of days just as a short relaxing break.
Trapani is a beautiful town with great restaurants and some amazing views out across the sea. We stayed there for duration and visited the salt production farm and got an introduction to how it is made and the history of the farm itself from the owner's son, which was fascinating. We also rode the cable car up the hill behind Trapani to an even smaller town called Erice. Very quaint, very touristy, nice restaurants but we only had a quick look then came back down.
I was a little worried about flying the drone (DJI Mavic) especially on the early sunrise footage) as Trapani is quite a windy little town. It's on the most westerly point of the island and leans into all the Mediterranean winds (which is one reason the place is able to farm so much salt), but the Mavic handled it without a problem. I did get chased out of the sky by the seagulls though...
Yes, it's quite long, but I hope this gives a good flavour of how our little trip to Sicily was. We definitely hope to go back there and explore the east coast, maybe around the Etna area...
