I caught The Lough Foyle ferry which runs between .Magilligan Point in N. Ireland and Greencastle, Inishowen, County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland. The Point Bar in N.Ireland is adjacent to the ferry terminal. Sailing took about 10 minutes. Greencastle is a sleepy fishing village. It is home to a Maritime Museum and Planetarium. Greencastle is also a point for exploring Inishowen Peninsula which is full of hidden treasures. Roads are marked for the 'Inishowen 100' scenic drive and the coast has many special coves.

Fort Dunree Inishowen Peninsula Co. Donegal Republic Of Ireland.
Fort Dunree Inishowen Peninsula Co. Donegal Republic Of Ireland.
Dunree Fort is strategically situated near the mouth of Lough Swilly in an area of stunning natural beauty. It has been attacked many times over the years by nearly everyone trying to get a foothold in Ireland including the Vikings, the Normans, the Gallowglassses, the English, the Germans and the French. In 1798 Wolf Tone was intercepted by the English navy on a French vessel near this location and this incident sparked the British to start building Martello fortifications along the entire Irish and English coastlines. The word ‘Dunree’ in Irish translates to ‘Dun Fhraoigh’ which means ‘The Fort of the Heather’ suggesting that this rocky promontory was always an important defensive location. During WW1, the British moved their entire north Atlantic fleet into Lough Swilly from Scapa Flow in Scotland as it was deemed a strategic and safe location. It was also one of only three ports in Ireland retained by the British until 1938 after the Irish Free State was established in 1921 (the other two being Berehaven and Cobh). The fort is now a military museum which can be accessed by a small bridge over the natural fissure in the rocks.

DJI Phantom 3 Advanced - Frazer Mariner - New Lough Foyle Ferry - Maiden Voyage
Drone Flight 499. July 17th 2017, after a long wait the new Lough Foyle ferry set sail on it's first official maiden voyage, however the sailing went unannounced so I didn't even know her mechanical issues were fixed yet. I happened to be driving to the Point Bar for dinner when I suddenly spotted her leaving Greencastle heading for Magilligan Point so I rushed down to the beach and prepped the drone for take off. I met her at 400m range, the new ferry looked beautiful with a nice blue and white paint job, they couldn't have picked a better day for her first sailing, the sun was blazing, the sea and sky were deep blue and wind light, what a glorious day to finally meet the new ferry. Vessel details...
Name: Frazer Mariner
IMO: -
Flag: Ireland
Size: 43m x 13m
The sun was so bright I could barely see the screen on my tablet so for this reason I stayed back and played it safe. When over the lough I stayed more than 30m from her (IAA) then when she approached the pier I climbed to more than 50m (CAA) while maintaining strong line of sight so all was safe. I counted six cars on board. The following day my Wife and I boarded the ferry on yet another glorious day which you can see at the start of this video, soundtrack is Hans Zimmer's 'Sorrow', thanks very much for watching. nightskyhunter.com
