Peruvian Amazon Tambopata National Reserve | Puerto Maldonado, Peru | Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica
On day three of our stay at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica in the Peruvian Amazon, we cruised down the Madre de Dios river to the vast Tambopata National Reserve. More than 1,000 pristine square miles of nature, the preserve is a beautiful combination of Peru’s warm and wet habitats - wetlands, rainforest and oxbow lakes. The oxbow lakes - free-standing bodies of water - are created by the jungle slowly cutting off a portion of a greater river. The Amazon is in a perpetual cycle of consumption and creation. The forest is forever eating into its lakes as the river simultaneously expands by digesting evermore of the forest.

Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica is an eco-lodge located along the steep banks of Madre de Dios River at the heart of a 29,650-acre private ecological reserve (45-min boat drive from Puerto Maldonado). A web of sidewalks join the Reserva Amazonica’s buildings and 8 km of trails through the jungle that surrounds the lodge. Each of the 35 rooms at the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica is located in a private, thatch-roofed cabaña constructed in the traditional style of the Ese’eja tribe, using natural materials but incorporating modern amenities to ensure your comfort. There are two suite types in addition to the standard rooms. The area offers a wealth of opportunities for excursions, whether they are full or partial day. In addition to hiking, wildlife experiences, and canoe trips to wildlife-rich oxbow lakes, you can also walk through the rainforest canopy on a system of bridges suspended over 30 m (100 ft) above ground. After an immersive day in nature, guests can soak in a sunset over the river while awaiting a rejuvenating massage treatment at the Ena Spa (at additional cost). The spacious dining room, in the two-storey Amazon Pavilion serves breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica lodge and Lake Sandoval canoe trip
June 19-21, Our first few days in Peru were spent at the beautiful Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica near Puerto Maldonado. We trekked through muddy rainforest, saw monkeys, bats, caiman lizards and a lot of insects. We canoed on Lake Sandoval, walked through the rainforest at night and also did a canopy walk high above the rainforest trees.
