지중해 바다와 통하는 또 다른 창문, 블루홀. 최고 깊이 60m 수직동굴인 블루홀에서 나는 프로다이버 빈스와 함께 스쿠버다이빙을 하기로 했다. 좁은 기암절벽 틈 사이를 지나간다. 과연 블루홀은 어떤 모습일까? 설렘과 두려움이 동시에 밀려온다. 그것도 잠시 드넓은 바다와 웅장한 기암절벽이 나를 압도한다. 10분 정도 갔을까? 드디어 다이빙 포인트 도착. “블루홀의 수심은 약 40미터예요. 안에 동굴이 있고요. 동굴에서 바깥쪽을 바라보면 새파란 색이 아주 멋져요. 시계도 더 선명하고, 더 파랗죠.” 입수하는데 아, 다시 밀려오는 두려움과 설렘. 10년 전 스쿠버다이빙 자격증을 딴 나는 이번 블루홀 다이빙을 계획하며 재교육을 받았다. 시간을 쪼개 연습하는 게 꽤나 힘들었는데 블루홀 아래 들어선 순간, 그간의 기억이 투명해졌다. 환상적인 분위기에 몽롱해진다. 나도 모르게 몸이 바다 밑으로 가라앉는다. 블루홀로 빨려 들어가는 느낌이다. 이때, 빈스가 바로 나를 도와줬다. 부력 조절을 못한 것이다. 다행히 아무 일도 없었지만, 스쿠버 다이빙을 하려면 힘들어도 연습은 필수, 파트너도 필수라는 걸 다시금 깨달았다. 마음을 진정하고 나니 바다 속 생명들이 자세히 보이기 시작했다. 모든 게 아름답다. 앞서가던 빈스가 손짓을 한다. 문어다. 자신의 영역을 침범한 이방인이 맘에 안 드는 듯. 이내 도망을 친다. 블루홀 스쿠버다이빙에는 여러 코스가 있다. 해저동굴을 통과하는 것도 그 중 하나다. 한 사람이 겨우 지나갈 만큼 좁은 구멍인데, 파트너 빈스는 유연하게 빠져나간다. 물론 나는 시간이 좀 걸렸다. 하지만 무사히, 통과했다. 나에게 자연의 신비를 보여준 블루홀과 빈스. 내 기억 속에 영원히 함께 하길 바란다.

Gozo, Malta
Gozo formerly Gaulos is an island of the Maltese archipelago in the Mediterranean Sea. The island is part of Malta. After the island of Malta itself, it is the second-largest. Compared to its southeastern neighbour, Gozo is more rural and known for its scenic hills, which are featured on its coat of arms.
The island of Gozo has long been associated with Ogygia, the island home of the nymph Calypso in Homer's Odyssey. In that story, Calypso, possessed of great supernatural powers, and in love with Odysseus, holds him captive for a number of years, until finally releasing him to continue his journey home.
As of March 2015, the island has a population of around 37,342 (out of Malta's total 445,000), and its inhabitants are known as Gozitans (Maltese: Għawdxin). It is rich in historic locations such as the Ġgantija temples, which, along with the other Megalithic Temples of Malta, are among the world's oldest free-standing structures.
The island is rural in character and, compared to the main island Malta, less developed. It was known for the Azure Window, a natural limestone arch that was a remarkable geological feature, until its collapse in 2017. The island has other notable natural features, including the Inland Sea and Wied il-Mielaħ Window. There are many beaches on the island, as well as seaside resorts that are popular with both locals and tourists, the most popular being Marsalforn and Xlendi. Gozo is considered one of the top diving destinations in the Mediterranean and a centre for water sports.
Gozo has been inhabited since 5000 BC, when farmers from nearby Sicily crossed the sea to the island. Due to the discovery of similar pottery found in both places from the Għar Dalam phase, it has been suggested that the first colonists were specifically from the area of Agrigento; however, it is currently unknown exactly where in Sicily the farmers came from. They are thought to have first lived in caves on the outskirts of what is now known as San Lawrenz.
Gozo was an important place for cultural evolution, and during the neolithic period the Ġgantija temples were built; they are among the world's oldest free-standing structures, as well as the world's oldest religious structures. The temple's name is Maltese for belonging to the giants, because legend in Maltese and Gozitan folklore says the temples were built by giants. Another important Maltese archaeological site in Gozo, which dates back to the neolithic period, is the Xagħra Stone Circle. Also, native tradition and certain ancient Greek historians (notably Euhemerus and Callimachus) maintain that Gozo is the island Homer described as Ogygia, home of the nymph Calypso.
In July 1551 Ottomans under Sinan Pasha and Dragut invaded and ravaged Gozo and enslaved most of its inhabitants, about 5,000, bringing them to Tarhuna Wa Msalata in Libya, their departure port in Gozo was Mġarr ix-Xini. The island of Gozo was repopulated between 1565 and 1580 by people from mainland Malta, undertaken by the Knights of Malta.

Azure Window Highlights and Victoria Gozo Malta
Azure Window and Victoria Gozo Malta Highlights is another video in my Malta Tourist Information series.

It’s just €1:50 for any bus journey in Malta, so we took the bus to the MGarr Ferry Terminal for a day out to Gozo.
We bought return tickets, costing only €4:65 each, which makes for a very low cost day out.
Crossing to Gozo from Malta on the Ferry was a relaxing journey,
from the modern cruise terminal in Malta,
to the crossing on a spacious boat with all amenities.
The crossing took about 25 minutes and was a good sightseeing opportunity with stunning views.
Once in Gozo, we caught the bus to The Azure Window and Inland Sea at the far end of Gozo at SAN Lawrenz,
again only €1:50 single, and it took best part of an hour to get to there.
For only €4 we had the most exciting 20 minutes boat ride ever
from boarding at the inland sea
and cruising through the rocky cliffs
to the open sea and the Azure Window.
Here’s the highlights.
As we return to the Inland Sea, You have to agree that for €4 that was good value.
Now to get the bus back into Victoria the Capital of Gozo to find more adventure, where we explored the many Squares to relax in with a coffee, explore the narrow lanes, and explored the town.
We could have toured Gozo in the Gozo sightseeing bus or hired a Cycle, but we had a bus to take to catch the Ferry back to Malta.

The Azure Window has been featured in films, such as Clash of the Titans (1981) at the 104th minute and The Count of Monte Cristo (2002) at the 13th minute. It can also be seen in the television miniseriesThe Odyssey (1997), and HBO's TV series Game of Thrones. The filming of Game of Thrones resulted in controversy when a protected ecosystem was damaged by a subcontractor.
Although illegal, the Azure Window is a popular cliff diving or tombstoning spot. Many videos on YouTubefeature people leaping from the middle, and side of the arch.
The arch of the Azure Window is disintegrating, as large pieces of rock keep falling from the arch. It is expected that the arch will completely disappear within just a few years. The arch is in a dangerous condition and warning notices are placed to stop people walking over the top of the arch.
Evidence of this can be seen when the images of the Azure Window as shown in Clash of the Titans (1981) are compared to the more recent images shown in The Odyssey (1997) and The Count of Monte Cristo (2002). The former images depict the Azure Window arch with a flat underside, whereas the latter images clearly show that a significant proportion the flat underside has since broken away. In April of 2012 a large piece of rock was dislocated and made the window larger, more unstable and losing its almost perfect oblong shape.

The Ansgariussons is shredding the inland tunnel at Gozo island. We follow the tunnel trough and exit in the other end at 25 m. depth and following drop off outside down to 42 m. before we start ascending again..
One of the main Gozo diving sites, the Inland Sea is a shallow lagoon on the right hand side of the car park at Dwejra. There is a steep small road down to the lagoon, and you can get your car right down to the waters edge. This Gozo diving spot is also a popular venue for the tourist buses who visit Dwejra, as a group of local boatmen run trips out through the sea tunnel and around the Azure window. Around the lagoon a couple of fisherman huts have been converted into cafes, and these are great spots to relax after the dive and have a bite to eat.
After kitting up at this Gozo diving site, it's short walk into the water along the left hand side of the small jetty. I prefer to walk along the jetty to a point just before it gets too high to slip into the water, and slip in there. This reduces the amount of time slipping on the melon sized boulders underfoot. Take care on this entry / exit point, these weed covered rocks are very very slippy. Martyn Farr found this out to his cost after we had dived the tunnel. He mistakenly trusted me with his spare strobe on an exit. Despite diving here loads of times, and knowing what the Gozo diving conditions were on the exit, I slipped, and Martyn's expensive underwater strobe then failed a bounce test across the jetty! Great Gozo diving, but a bit rough on the underwater photography equipment.
Gozo Diving -- Inland Sea Entry
As you leave the jetty to swim over to the tunnel entrance, the water is very shallow, and you need to keep to the left to avoid the tourist boats. You are best inflating your BCD a bit and swimming the first 50 -- 60 metres on your back. There are some large boulders under the water, so you may end up banging into to them if you don't keep a careful watch on where you are going. Once you reach the tunnel mouth on the surface, keep to the left. There is a huge slab of rock just underwater at the tunnel entrance and the boats have to stay right to avoid it. However, there is a nice diver sized gully on it's left hand side, and this is the best way to submerge into the tunnel at this Gozo diving site.
Gozo Diving -- Inland Sea Underwater
As you drop down from the surface into 2m at the tunnel mouth, the gully drops to a ledge at 6m which is a great stop off point on the return to do a safety stop. From the 6m ledge the tunnel floor drops down over large boulders to its base at 26m. There is also a small cavern at the right hand side of the tunnel mouth that is worth exploring at the end of the dive, if you have air, and the boats are not running.
Most divers exit the tunnel along the floor and return at 6m -- 10m along the wall. Exiting at the base of tunnel gives you the clearest view of the tunnel's seaward exit and you will be able to see its full size from sea floor to the surface. This is one of the most dramatic underwater sights of all the Gozo diving spots on the island when the water is clear. So if it has been blowing a north westerly, it can be worth waiting 48hrs to let the visibility return before making this dive. Even very experienced divers are blown away with beauty of this dive.

Honeymoon Love in Malta
