Innisfail Canada Day Celebration July 1, 2010
July first was Canada Day and Canadians across the country and the world were celebrating Canada's 143rd birthday. The Innisfail Historical Village in Innisfail Alberta was no exception.
On Canada Day they celebrated with a variety of events, games for the children, local entertainers and the official flag ceremony featuring the Innisfail Legion Pipe Band and local politicians. People of all ages took part in the celebration which is an annual event at the Historical village which originated in 1970 with the purpose of preserving and housing the history of the Innisfail district.
The Village is made up of seventeen buildings, displayed on 2 acres of land and these are furnished to interpret the history of the area up to the 1930s. There is a large display of farm machinery and a day use picnic area. For more information on the Innisfail Historical Village visit their website at innisfailhistory.com

Spanish Eyes - Susanna Heystek playing at Canada Day celebrations
Susanna Heystek is playing Spanish Eyes at the Innisfail (Alberta) Canada Day celebrations, July 1, 2010. I made a recording of the music part during the practice before the actual events started, since my equipment failed in the breeze that was blowing during the open air event. It was a privilege to participate in the event at the well managed Historic Village.
Stephansson House | Alberta Historical Site | Markerville | Canada
An historical Alberta landmark set a fall-coloured prairie landscape.
Stephan G. Stephansson – Poet of the Rocky Mountains – was born in Iceland in 1853. In 1889, he brought his family to Alberta near what is now the Markerville area. Within the view of the Rockies, he homesteaded with his family, farming by day and writing by night. Stephansson’s prolific literary output has helped make him one of the greatest poets in the western world.
Stephansson’s home is a snapshot in time: 1927 to be precise. With costumed interpreters helping bring this story to life, you’ll find beautiful original furnishings, wood burning stove, newspaper wallpaper, serene landscape, the smell of baking, and of course, the poetry of Stephansson himself.
About 7 km south, you can stop for ice cream at Historic Markerville Creamery Museum, and learn more about the Icelandic pioneer settlement experience. A few more minutes southwest, near Spruceview, you can enjoy the Dickson Store museum and the Danish Canadian National Museum, in the heart of the Danish immigrant settlement of the late 1800s and early 1900s.
Bigfoot fire
This is the good old bigfoot fire that happened in Innisfail. We lost our historical town clock and it was a huge loss to the fire department. But man, it was one hell of a fight. Bryan, Thomas and I were there for a good 4/5 hours before we had to turn in and it was still raging on. Power lines froze, firemens butts froze to the ground, the inability to go inside of the building and the oh so sweet tools that they used. It burned straight through the night and they had to knock it down to get the fire out. I plan on going down one day and reveal what remains, an empty lot with a little less of Innisfail on mainstreet.
