Inokashira Park, established in 1917, will celebrate its 100th anniversary in 2017. Originally considered a park in the suburbs, Inokashira Park now serves as a precious green space for the adjacent residential area.
The third Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu, is said to have given Inokashira Pond its name. The name is said to mean either “source of the water supply” or “well that supplies the most delicious water.” The Inokashira Pond was the source of the first water service for the city of Edo, the Kanda water supply. The water for this pond was used as drinking water until an improved water supply was completed in 1898.
The park is divided into four sections: Inokashira Pond and its surroundings, Gotenyama that contains a wooded area and the Shizen Bunka-en Gardens, recreation facilities in the wet portion of the park, and the No. 2 park to the southeast. The landscape is full of variety, with the lowlands of Inokashira Pond and the highlands of Gotenyama.

Inokashira Park
This large public park in Kichijoji celebrates its centennial in 2017. With its famous pond, historical shrine and zoo, the park is an important part of Kichijoji life. On weekends, it holds regular festivals with arts, crafts and live performers.
Kooriya Peace
A popular shop dedicated to kakigori, Japanese shaved ice. Its special syrups, which use in-season fruit, and light, fluffy ice, make it so popular it requires reservations.
Hammock Cafe Mahika Mano
A cafe that doubles as a hammock showroom. Guests can literally hang out on five different styles of hammock while enjoying desserts and drinks.
Majerca
A shop full of cute, colorful odds and ends found on Nakamichi Dori. All of the items are created by people from around Japan with mental or physical disabilities, who display unique design sensibilities.
Tsukemono Bar 4328 (Shimizuya)
This Japanese pickle (tsukemono) purveyor dates back to 1945, and now also serves as a bar. By day, it sells tsukemono, and by night, it transforms into a small standing bar, where guests can chomp on tsukemono while having a drink.
Hamoniku
A standing grilled meat (yakiniku) eatery that opened in 2017, where pork and beef slices can be ordered by the slice, making it easy to visit in small groups or even alone. Carries over 25 different cuts of beef meat.

Inokashira Park (井の頭恩賜公園 Inokashira Onshi Kōen?) straddles Musashino and Mitaka in western Tokyo, Japan.
Inokashira Pond (井の頭池) and the Kanda River water source (神田上水 Kanda jōsui?), established during the Edo period, are the primary sources of the Kanda River.
The land was given to Tokyo in 1913. On May 1, 1918, it opened under the name Inokashira Onshi Kōen (井の頭恩賜公園), which can be translated as, Inokashira Imperial Gift Park. Thus the park was considered a gift from the emperor to the general public. This was the first time in Tokyo that a park was founded in such a manner.

Geography
Inokashira Park encompasses Inokashira pond in its center. Inokashira Pond is a long, narrow pond, stretching from northwest to southeast, and split into two branches at the northwest end. From the southeast end begins the Kanda River. A section of the stream of the Kanda River is also within the bounds of the park. On the west side of the park is a thicket, in Gotenyama, And on the other side of Kichijouji dori Ave. is Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau Of Construction Inokashira Cultural Park, a small zoo. On the southern side of the thicket, the Tamagawa Aqueduct flows toward the southeast, and further south is the western park area. Beside the downstream section of the Tamagawa Aqueduct is there is an Eastern Garden, which includes a small open area.
With regard to city boundaries, the Inokashira Pond, section of the Kanda River in the park, Inokashira-kōen Station, and the West and East gardens are in Mitaka. The area of the park beginning just past the northern shore of Inokashira Pond is in Musashino.
Near the park, less than 500 meters from Inokashira Pond is Kichijōji station, on the JR Chuo Line. Kichijōji Station has a Park Exit (公園口 kōen guchi?) on its south side, facing toward the park. The path from the station toward the pond is lined with shops aimed at young people.
In the southeast of the park is Inokashira-kōen Station, on the Keio Inokashira Line, which runs parallel to the Kanda River. The distance from the station to the pond is very short, and there are small paths and open spaces between them which visitors can wander through.
Nature and the seasons
Spring in Inokashira Park is the season of the blooming cherry trees that line the pond. Looking from the Nanai Bridge, which crosses the pond near the center, the branches of the cherry trees extending from the shore bloom so densely as to all but cover the surface of the pond. The pale color of the blossoms contrasts with the sky and water's surface. During the blooming period of cherry blossoms the park receives many visitors. In addition, on the west side of the park there are many flowers to be seen in the flowering plum grove before the blooming period of the cherry trees. On the north side of the plum grove, on the edge of the pond, there is a spring, but its flow is nowadays weak.
In summer one can enjoy the green of the trees that cover Gotenyama, and the refreshing air underneath.
In autumn the leaves of the many kinds of trees in the park change color, and the fallen leaves bury the walking paths.
Winter in Inokashira Park is also lively. Many migrating birds come, and Inokashira Pond becomes their wintering place.
Wild snakes can also be seen within the park.

Harmonica Yokocho is a collection of alleys that can be accessed from the north side of Kichijoji Station. Kichijoji is an upperscale area of Tokyo that has been conisistantly voted as the most desirable place to live in Japan every year since the poll began in 2004.
Harmonica Yokocho spreads out along the north side of the Kichijoji Station. Those going there for the first time will be astonished at the large variety of restaurants, making Harmonica Yokocho a great place to grab a bite and enjoy some drinks. If you are looking for a place to enjoy Japanese food, drinks, and the atmosphere of an old school Japanese market, Harmonica Yokocho is a great place to visit when you come to Tokyo. In addition to the area featured in this video, the rest of Kichijoji, especially Inokashira Park, is also recommended.
Harmonica Yokocho originally flourished as a flea market in the years following the second world war. Since the late 90s, it now functions as an area to enjoy Japanese street food, with a bustling night life scene.
Kichijōji Station is served by the Chūō Line, Sobu Line, Tozai Line and the Keiō Inokashira Line.

A walking tour of the Kichijoji area in Tokyo on Monday, Oct. 8th, 2012. I take a train on the Chuo Line from Shinjuku to Kichijoji, which cost 210 yen one-way. This is one of my favorite areas of Tokyo because of the atmosphere, the shops, restaurants, and park. The Inokashira Park and the Kichijoji area has become quite well-known for street musicians and street vendors.

Geography
Inokashira Park encompasses Inokashira pond in its center. Inokashira Pond is a long, narrow pond, stretching from northwest to southeast, and split into two branches at the northwest end. From the southeast end begins the Kanda River. A section of the stream of the Kanda River is also within the bounds of the park. On the west side of the park is a thicket, in Gotenyama, And on the other side of Kichijouji dori Ave. is Tokyo Metropolitan Government Bureau Of Construction Inokashira Cultural Park, a small zoo. On the southern side of the thicket, the Tamagawa Aqueduct flows toward the southeast, and further south is the western park area. Beside the downstream section of the Tamagawa Aqueduct is there is an Eastern Garden, which includes a small open area.
With regard to city boundaries, the Inokashira Pond, section of the Kanda River in the park, Inokashira-kōen Station, and the West and East gardens are in Mitaka. The area of the park beginning just past the northern shore of Inokashira Pond is in Musashino.
Near the park, less than 500 meters from Inokashira Pond is Kichijōji station, on the JR Chuo Line. Kichijōji Station has a Park Exit (公園口 kōen guchi?) on its south side, facing toward the park. The path from the station toward the pond is lined with shops aimed at young people.
In the southeast of the park is Inokashira-kōen Station, on the Keio Inokashira Line, which runs parallel to the Kanda River. The distance from the station to the pond is very short, and there are small paths and open spaces between them which visitors can wander through.
Nature and the seasons
Spring in Inokashira Park is the season of the blooming cherry trees that line the pond. Looking from the Nanai Bridge, which crosses the pond near the center, the branches of the cherry trees extending from the shore bloom so densely as to all but cover the surface of the pond. The pale color of the blossoms contrasts with the sky and water's surface. During the blooming period of cherry blossoms the park receives many visitors. In addition, on the west side of the park there are many flowers to be seen in the flowering plum grove before the blooming period of the cherry trees. On the north side of the plum grove, on the edge of the pond, there is a spring, but its flow is nowadays weak.
In summer one can enjoy the green of the trees that cover Gotenyama, and the refreshing air underneath.
In autumn the leaves of the many kinds of trees in the park change color, and the fallen leaves bury the walking paths.
Winter in Inokashira Park is also lively. Many migrating birds come, and Inokashira Pond becomes their wintering place.
Wild snakes can also be seen within the park.

Inokashira Park (井の頭恩賜公園 Inokashira Onshi Kōen?) straddles Musashino and Mitaka in western Tokyo, Japan.
Inokashira Pond (井の頭池) and the Kanda River water source (神田上水 Kanda jōsui?), established during the Edo period, are the primary sources of the Kanda River.
The land was given to Tokyo in 1913. On May 1, 1918, it opened under the name Inokashira Onshi Kōen (井の頭恩賜公園), which can be translated as, Inokashira Imperial Gift Park. Thus the park was considered a gift from the emperor to the general public. This was the first time in Tokyo that a park was founded in such a manner.
