13. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Morimoto Kikuo, Founder of the Institute for Khmer Traditional Textiles:
People think that the mulberry tree and the silk worm originally came from China but actually I don't think that's true. I have done a lot of research on the origins of silk and what I discovered is that the ancient forests around here were home to mulberry trees and silk worms, long before they were ever discovered in China.

21. SOUNDBITE (French), Sylvine Devaux, Technical Assistant for Chantier Ecole:
Cambodian silk is golden. It's entirely hand-made from growing it to the weaving process. It is woven and dyed by hand, with natural dyes. It's a very soft silk, very nice, it's a soft but also very tough material - the fibres do not break very easily and you can use it every day.

28. SOUNDBITE (Japanese) Morimoto Kikuo, founder of the Institute for Khmer Traditional Textiles:
For me, the quality of the silk is more important than the quantity I produce. In the international silk business in recent years there has been an over concentration on quantity - a lot of the silk around today is machine made hybrid fabric and the quality is very low. But Cambodian silk has kept its high quality which is a good thing because now the demand for high quality silk is growing rapidly.

LEADIN:
A Japanese textile expert is teaching a new generation of Cambodians how to produce traditional silk.
Decades of war almost wiped out Cambodia's silk industry along with many of the specialised techniques used to produce it.
STORYLINE:
This is where Cambodian silk is produced.
10 kilometres north of Bayon, near Cambodia's ancient temples at Angkor Wat.
Cambodian silk was highly prized for its quality before the silk industry was almost wiped out during the Khmer Rouge era in the late 1970s.
In an effort to help revive traditional Cambodian silk Japanese textiles expert Morimoto Kikuo founded The Institute for Khmer Traditional Textiles in 1996.
Morimoto pioneered what he calls the 'Wisdom of the Forest' concept of silk production in Cambodia that uses only materials found in the local forests.

Angkor Silk Farm - Silk on the Loom - Siem Reap, Cambodia
WestIslandKev filmed: June 30, 2013 - Siem Reap, Cambodia.
Here the silk thread is on a loom to make intricate Cambodian patterns.
The Angkor Silk farm, run by Artisans Angkor, is located in Siem Reap about 20 minutes from the city center. I enjoyed a tuk tuk ride to the center. The tour guide will explain the role of mulberry trees, silkworm farming, cocoon unwinding, preparation of the silk threads, tie-dyeing of the threads and silk weaving.

The Rebirth of a Forgotten Cambodian Art
Japanese textile expert Kikuo Morimoto almost single-handedly revived the art of handwoven silks in war-torn Cambodia. Cambodia’s ancient handwoven silk industry, once among the world’s finest, was fading into oblivion before Japanese textiles expert Kikuo Morimoto came along.

Cambodia (Listeni/kæmˈboʊdiə/;[7] Khmer: កម្ពុជា, Kampuchea, IPA: [kɑmˈpuˈciə]), officially known as the Kingdom of Cambodia (Khmer: ព្រះរាជាណាចក្រកម្ពុជា, Preăh Réachéanachâk Kâmpŭchéa) and once known as the Khmer Empire, is a country located in the southern portion of the Indochina Peninsula in Southeast Asia. Its total landmass is 181,035 square kilometres (69,898 sq mi), bordered by Thailand to the northwest, Laos to the northeast, Vietnam to the east, and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest. With a population of over 15 million, Cambodia is the 69th most populous country in the world. The official religion is Theravada Buddhism, practiced by approximately 95 percent of the population. The country's minority groups include Vietnamese, Chinese, Chams, and 30 hill tribes.[8] The capital and largest city is Phnom Penh, the political, economic, and cultural center of Cambodia. The kingdom is a constitutional monarchy with Norodom Sihamoni, a monarch chosen by the Royal Throne Council, as head of state. The head of government is Hun Sen, who is currently the longest serving non-royal leader in South East Asia and has ruled Cambodia for over 25 years. Cambodia's ancient name is Kambuja (Sanskrit: कंबुज).[9] In 802 AD, Jayavarman II declared himself king and marked the beginning of the Khmer Empire which flourished for over 600 years, allowing successive kings to dominate much of Southeast Asia and accumulate immense power and wealth. The Indianized kingdom built monumental temples including Angkor Wat, now a World Heritage Site, and facilitated the spread of first Hinduism, then Buddhism to much of Southeast Asia. After the fall of Angkor to Ayutthaya in the 15th century, Cambodia was then ruled as a vassal between its neighbors. Cambodia became a protectorate of France in 1863, and gained independence in 1953. The Vietnam War extended into Cambodia, and following the US bombing of Cambodia from 1969-1973, the Khmer Rouge emerged as a major power, taking Phnom Penh in 1975 and later carrying out the Cambodian Genocide from 1975 until 1979, when they were ousted by Vietnam and the Vietnamese backed People's Republic of Kampuchea in the Cambodian–Vietnamese War (1979-1991). Following the 1991 Paris Peace Accords Cambodia was governed briefly by a United Nations mission (1992-1993). The UN withdrew after holding elections in which around 90 percent of the registered voters cast ballots. The 1997 coup placed power solely in the hands of Prime Minister Hun Sen and the Cambodian People's Party, who remains in power as of 2015. The country faces numerous challenges and sociopolitical issues, including widespread poverty,[10] pervasive corruption,[11] lack of political freedoms,[12] low human development,[13] and a high rate of hunger.[14][15][16] Cambodia has been described by one author as a vaguely communist free-market state with a relatively authoritarian coalition ruling over a superficial democracy.[17] A low income economy, Cambodia nonetheless has one of the best economic records in Asia, with growth averaging 6 percent over the last decade. Agriculture remains the dominant economic sector, with strong growth in textiles, construction, garments, and tourism leading to increased foreign investment and international trade.[18]

Cambodia Silk Project
Channa the weaver - in Khmer
I'm born in1990 in the village of Prey Chrey, at the east of Cambodia.
In this village, all the women work as weavers since many generations and the men are farmers.
Our village is one of the only village in Cambodia where the weaving skills has been preserved. Actually we still use the same traditional manual loom which made our silk fabric one of the best in the world.
My grandmother is one of the last weaving expert in of Cambodia. At nearly 80 years old, she continues to supervise the weavers and sell the silk fabrics at the town to resellers and manufacturers of silk apparels. Since I'm still a kid she choose me to succeed in her work and she never stop to train me to the techniques of weaving, dying, management and sell.
Here the conditions of living are very difficult and the incomes are too low to face the cost of school.
The children have to abandon the school at grade 9 for the most lucky and work to support the family.
When I was 20 years old, a French entrepreneurship who make silk clothing for export market propose me to sponsor my studies that I have stopped when I was 14.
I had a dream to develop the economy in my village which will improve the often difficult living conditions. My French sponsor promises me at this time to help me realize my dream but he always said to me that I have to prove that I can do it.
In Siem Reap, living in a French family, with regular relationship with expatriate and tourists from all over the world, I discover others culture and an opening to another world.
I was so happy to go back to school that I quickly regain my lateness and I received today the congratulations from the jury at my ''white'' bachelor.
In 2009, my sponsor told me about the existence of a smooth and silky fiber extracted from the stems of the sacred lotus flower.
We have then discovered that in Cambodia there is the biggest field of sacred lotus flower with a fabulous quality of fibers.
The knowledge of spinning and weaving was staying secret by Burmese people since many centuries and we start dreaming to discover this secret and then offer additional incomes for hundreds of Cambodian people living around lotus ponds with bad conditions of living because the selling of lotus seeds to Chinese business is not very lucrative.
Then as soon as I came back from school, I used to harvest lotus stems and study this fiber during 3 years until to get a unique quality in the world.
