OAXACA MEXICO - TOUR AND TRAVEL VLOG
Oaxaca is one of Mexico's most unique states, noted for its rich traditional heritage and diverse ethnic population, as well as for its artistic, cultural, and culinary treasures. This video will cover the many sights and UNESCO World heritage sights to photograph in this region.
1. Oaxaca City (7:23 - 9:35)
Designated UNESCO Site noted for its Spanish colonial architecture. It is filled with colorful, wonderfully preserved
buildings.
2. Markets (8:18 - 8:23)
Oaxaca is known as the Land of the Seven Moles, a complex sauce used with meat and rice. But that is not all. Oaxaca is renowned for its unique regional cuisines. The markets are a great way to try the food.
3. Mezcal Factory Tour (2:06 - 2:50)
Mezcal is one of Oaxaca's most famous exports. It is similar to tequila, only with a rich smoky flavor. Mezcal comes in many unique flavors and different aging categories including a variety that comes with a worm for added flavor. Check out the Mezcal Factories where they will show you just how this liquid gold is made.
4. Textiles (1:14 - 2:00)
Oaxaca is world famous for its textiles. They are created using natural dyes and wool. The textile patterns mimic the design elements from the Mitla, an archeological site with distinctive geometric patterns, making them distinctive from any other textiles.
5. Templo de Santo Domingo de Guzman (7:36 - 8:00)
Glorious Baroque church found in Oaxaca City. It includes lavishly ornate interior. Construction started in the 16th Century but did not complete until the 17th Century. The town cathedral is witness to all the cultural activities taking place beneath its facade, including weddings and festivals.
6. Árbol del Tule (0:40 - 1:10)
Botanists estimate this tree to be 2,000 years old. It is considered the largest and oldest tree in the world with a perimeter at 139 feet in circumference. It didn't even fit into one picture frame!
7. Hierve de Agua (3:50 - 4:30)
One of the most surreal landscape I have ever seen is Hierve de Agua, found about two hours outside of the city. The name translates to place where the water boils, and contains non-thermal pools, and natural rock formations rising form the valley below including the main highlight, a petrified waterfall. It was created by minerals that pushed through limestone, depositing onto the mountain. You can hike to the waterfall or wade around in the mineral pools.
8. Zocalo and Basilica of Our Lady of Solitude (8:23 - 8:36)
The Zocalo is the central plaza in Oaxaca City that includes a Spanish Baroque style church, Basilica of our Lady of Solitude. The Zocalo is connected by a pedestrian walkway to the other plaza, Santo Domingo. Along the Zocalo are many street shops and markets.
9. Mitla (2:30 - 3:46)
One of the famous archeology sites which translates to place of the dead. Mitla was an ancient burial and funeral ritual site for the Zapotec people, one of Oaxaca's indigenous groups. It includes one of the few surviving temples, noted for its distinctive small tile mosaic-like geometric patterns in the facade.
10. Monte Albán (6:00 - 7:28)
Monte Albán is so amazing, that it deserves its own blog post (coming soon). It is a UNESCO World Heritage site found about 20 minutes outside of the city. It is the first great city of Mesoamerica and dates back to 500 or 600 BCE. The Zapotec people leveled the mountains by hand (no metal tools or even wheels) to build their ceremonial center known as Monte Albán here, complete with temples or astronomical and religious purposes. Mitla and Monte Albán give you an idea of just how advanced this indigenous civilization was in its heyday.

Mexico: The City of Oaxaca.
The City of Oaxaca is a UNESCO heritage site known for its historic artist's colony set in the rugged Sierra Madre Mountains of Mexico. It is also an ideal base from which we explore the archaeological sites of Monte Albán and Mitla and the extraordinary petrified beauty of Hierve el Agua. Ancestors of the Zápotecs and Mixtecs can be traced back nearly 11,000 years and following the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, Dominican missionaries founded fabulous churches, monasteries, and convents. Many buildings still exist and the baroque architecture of the Cathedral, the Church of Santo Domingo, and the Convent of Santa Catalina (now a hotel), have all been beautifully restored. A walk through the city reveals a shopper's paradise of gold filigree and silver handcrafted jewelry, black pottery and hand-woven crafts. For more information visit ontopoftheworld.net and check out episode 64 in the international category.
Chiapas, Mexico
Located in Mexico's southern region, Chiapas borders Tabasco to the north, Guatemala and the Pacific Ocean to the south and Veracruz and Oaxaca to the west.
Famous for its wide variety of festivities, traditions, crafts and cuisine, you'll also find a lot of natural beauty in Chiapas at such places as Canon del Sumidero National Park, the Cascadas de Agua Azul Biosphere Reserve and the Montebello Lagoons, where you'll see turquoise-blue waters surrounded by a forest with indigenous plant and animal species. What's more, you can visit fascinating Mayan archaeological zones, including those at Tonina, Bonampak, Yaxchilan and mysterious Palenque, where archaeologists have made recent discoveries of the rulers' tombs. Nearby, in the magical city of San Cristobal de las Casas, you'll see beautiful religious buildings like the Cathedral and the Templo de Santo Domingo. You can also visit the plazas and markets, where you'll find crafts, garments and wood sculptures made by Tzotzil, Tzeltal and Lacandon indigenous artisans.
In the surrounding areas of Tuxtla Gutierrez, the state capital, where you can marvel at important historic buildings like the Cathedral of San Marcos and the Antiguo Palacio de Gobierno, you can also visit the towns of Chiapas de Corzo, San Juan Chamula and Comitan de Dominguez. There you'll see splendid architecture, various festivities and Spanish- and Mayan-influenced traditions.

LOS DIABLOS DE OAXACALIFORNIA
SOUNDS OF CALIFORNIA presents:
Grupo Nuu Yuku & Banda Brillo de San Miguel Cuevas
Facing racial prejudice and extreme poverty in Mexico, hundreds of thousands of Mixtecs and other indigenous peoples from Oaxaca in Southern Mexico have been driven to find work outside their small villages that they have occupied continuously for centuries maintaining indigenous languages, knowledge systems and artistic expressions that have held their communities together.
California is home to the largest number of indigenous immigrants from Oaxaca, who make up a major part of the 21st Century farm labor force. After a long day’s work in the fields facing extreme conditions and low wages, friends and families come together to practice traditional music, dance, foodways and other expressions that foster a sense of belonging and feeling of home.
The Mixtec artists who practice the music and dance traditions of Los Diablos from the Juxtlahuaca District of Northern Oaxaca tell this story about the personal and cultural meanings of their traditional arts in OAXACALIFORNIA.

Exploring Oaxaca Documentary
Individual documentary produced by Sylvia Cong and Kris North.
This is a project for my International Documentary Production class. In March 2015, my class of 14 students conducted a field trip to Oaxaca, Mexico, where offers documentary filmmakers many diverse opportunities for discovering subjects and stories. In Oaxaca, we worked with Ms. Mimi Edmunds, the Emmy-nominated producer who credits include 60 Minutes, CBS’ documentary unit, to conduct shooting for our individual documentary.
Within the 9 days in Oaxaca, we conducted field interviews with the local Oaxaquenõs; we did research about the culture, tradition, and history; and we shoot stories about the local art, food, architecture, archeological sites, and music. Each team cooperates, but also work individually on their own theme.
My documentary is in a form of a travel log. I use the camera as my eyes, from a tourist`s perspective, to explore the city and the stories within it. The premier was at Purdue University on May 5th.

OAXACA, MEXICO is our new FAVORITE!!
Oaxaca is extraordinary! We're going behind the scenes to learn about alebrijes, black pottery, & more!

This video is Part 2 of our Oaxaca, Mexico video series. In this travel vlog, we visit three special towns just outside of Oaxaca City:
1. San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca
2. San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca
3. Santo Tomás Jalieza, Oaxaca
First, we went to San Bartolo Coyotepec to see a live demonstration of traditional Oaxacan pottery making. We learn how the clay is harvested, molded, refined, carved, and cooked in underground ovens to create either black or brown pottery. The work that goes into each piece is astonishing!
Next, we drove to San Martin Tilcajete where we visited the famous alebrijes workshop of Jacobo and Maria Angeles. Disney Pixar actually came to this exact location while doing research for the movie Coco. It blew our minds to learn how laborious the process of making alebrijes is. People come to this workshop from all over the world to learn how to be a master at carving and painting Oaxaca alebrijes.
Before heading to our last stop, we enjoyed our tour guide’s “car bar” where we sampled some of their very own mezcal. Spoiler alert: Oaxacan Mezcal is SO GOOD!
Finally, we drove down the road to Santo Tomas Jalieza to learn how intricate, hand-woven textiles are made. We learned that it’s common for one piece to take 3, 7-hour days (21 hours total) to create just one!
It’s hard not to LOVE Oaxaca, Mexico after learning more about its culture. The patience, dedication, and love that all of these artisans have for their craft is inspiring. After spending one week in Oaxaca, we can safely say that it’s become one of our all-time favorite places in Mexico. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel to see our next Oaxaca video! Folkdance in Oaxaca, Mexico
Performed on Saturday night, December 5 in the plaza of the Basilica de Soledad in Oaxaca, Mexico, by the Compania Folklorico de Oaxaquenos. The last performance, Fandango Mixe, is a dignified, traditional dance of the pueblos.
