Tsunami commemoration in Khao Lak
Mourners from around the world gathered in Khao Lak on December 26th, to commemorate the tenth anniversary of the Indian Ocean Tsunami. Led by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-O-Cha, the commemoration took place at the resting place of Police Boat 813.
Now a memorial to the devastation wrought by the tsunami, the patrol boat was ripped from its anchorage by the wave and swept two kilometers inland.
Phuket Today spoke with some of the visitors who came to pay their respects at the Khao Lak memorial and Chanikarn Natalay who lost her husband and many family members in the tsunami.
Tsunamin 2004
En förlorad far!
A visit to southern Thailand - 10 years after the tsunami
On 26 December 2004, the most devastating tsunami in history brought death, misery and immense suffering to the people on the shores of the Indian Ocean. In its aftermath, 250,000 people were dead or missing, and nearly 1.7 million lost their homes. Immediately, Malteser International ran to the aid of the survivors – with both material as well as psychological assistance. A large-scale, sustainable reconstruction and reintegration program followed. Ten years after, Dr. Marie Theres Benner, former Malteser International Country Coordinator in Thailand, returns to the region of Khao Lak in southern Thailand and visits some of the families who received assistance back then in order to find out if they were able to recover from the disaster. (Malteser International, December 2014)

I was in my bedroom and I heard a noise - I went to the door and I saw water coming in. I turned around to the window and there was an enormous rush of water coming in. Then the door exploded - literally exploded - and the water came into the bedroom, in 8 seconds the room was full up. I dived to get to the other side, I don''t know how I managed to get out. I really don''t know.
Q: Where there a lot of people dead?
Definitely. There must be many, I can''t say how many. There were around 300 or 400 people in the hotel, there were 150 employees and I think there were around a hundred of us left.

STORYLINE:
Luxury resorts have sustained heavy damages in Thailand, following the tsunami that resulted from a point 9 earthquake originating on in Indonesia''s Sumatra.
The devastated stretch between Takua Pa and Khao Lak, 100 kilometres (62 miles) north of the island of Phuket, was the site of luxury hotels such as Le Meridien, Novotel, Khao Lak Laguna and the Sofitel Magic Lagoon Resort and Spa.
The Thai prime minister said on Tuesday that the death toll from earthquake-powered tidal waves could rise above two thousand.
The town of Khao Lak was particularly badly hit and because of its remote location, rescue attempts were only getting under way on Tuesday.
One volunteer estimated that some 200 bodies lay within the Buddhist Rasneramith temple which was being used as a makeshift morgue, up to 70 percent of them foreigners.
Bodies, many of them children and babies, were also scattered around the temple.
The stench of death hung in the air for a 30-kilometre (18-mile) stretch of beach north of the international resort island of Phuket to which Western
and Asian tourists seeking tranquillity used to flock.
The area of Phang Nga Province suffered the most casualties when tidal waves crashed into Thailand''s southern beach and island resorts on Sunday, killing 1,010 people and injuring 7,572, by the latest tally of the Interior Ministry''s Department of Disaster Prevention and Relief.
Of the dead, 537 were found in Phang Nga province and 203 on Phuket Island.
According to Phang Nga''s governor, about 1,000 searchers, including army troops riding bulldozers, would move into four areas of the province that have been difficult to access because of flooding and thick mud crusts.
According to the Thai Deputy Interior Minister, it was certain that more than 700 foreigners were among the dead victims but the exact number was still not known.
Citizens from South Korea, Japan, France, Germany, South Africa, Ireland, Denmark, Finland, Australia, Mexico, Russia, Sweden, Portugal, Israel, Chile, Spain and the United States were said to be among the thousands of foreigners who were in stricken areas of six provinces as the tsunami hit.

13. DVI forensic team identifying bodies
14. Crane lifting containers with bodies
STORYLINE
The bodies of 330 Western tourists were moved from a temporary mortuary in Bangha Nga province, in mainland Thailand to a DNA identification centre on Phuket Island .
The Disaster Victim Identification (DVI) teams carried out the first selection on the bodies of the Western tourists for transportation to Phuket island for DNA testing .
Thai teams are performing autopsies on Thai bodies which will remain in Bang Muang.
Most of of the bodies stored in Bang Muang temple in Bangha Nga province came from resorts in Khao Lak, an area badly hit by the December 26th tsunami.
By now, the decomposition is so extensive now that many of the bodies are now skeletal, with some loosely hanging flesh.
Experts say they are often unable to visually identify the race of the victims.
Following an established Interpol protocol, DVI, teams from 31 countries are meticulously examining the thousands of corpses from the Dec. 26 tsunami, jotting down on 16-page pink post-mortem forms these traits and anomalies.

Early evening, people from all walks of life, residents and tourists of many nationalities gathered at Chong Fah Beach at Bang Niang in Thakuapa of Phang-Nga province to attend the multi-faith ceremonies for those who perished in the 2004 Tsunami. It's been 3 years since the tragic natural disaster. People on the 6 Andaman Coastal Provinces of Phuket, Phang-Nga, Krabi, Trang, Satun and Ranong learnt from the past, moved forward for sustainable living with nature, but at the same time did not forget the loved ones who departed. The ceremonies started with Buddhism, Islamic, Christianity for both Protestants and Catholics, and finally Sikhism, as the natural disaster claimed over 5,000 lives of residents and tourists of different nationalities in Thailand. The ceremonies and the remembrance were also attended by 22 foreign ambassadors, diplomatic members and representatives from 2 international organizations. They all came in respect of those who perished and in support of local people in the Andaman region as well as families and friends of the victims.
Just after 7 pm, Princess UbonRatana arrived with her daughter Khun Siri kit-ti-ya to preside over the opening ceremony of the 3rd year remembrance. Upon arrival the Princess and her daughter viewed the exhibition about Khun Poom. It showed photos, Khun Poom's Home, a project which is being constructed at Wachira Hospital in Phuket, for the education and development of children. Despite the rain the ceremony went on in respectful manner. Khunying Tipawadee Meksawan reported the objective in organizing the event. Then a local student, On-Chanok NaThale, who lost her father in the Tsunami and is now studying at a Rajaprachanukroh school under HM the King's Patronage read out poem in Thai. Followed by a song 'Tears in Heaven' sung by Wasu Sang-singkaew. A member of the Princess's club for youth 'To Be Number One' sang 'Eternal Love' Then the princess gave a speech in Thai. Before lighting a candle and observing one minute of silence.
After that the princess released a floating lantern up to the sky. The number released in the evening signified the 5,395 people who died in the natural disaster. The sky over the Andaman Sea were lit and brightened once again for people who departed and as the government aimed to uplift the morale for families and friends of victims. It was an event to help promote hope, spirit and renewal for us all to keep moving forward. (Final song 'Wind of Hope' )
