Iezer mountains backcountry skitouring trip Romania
Iezer mountains backcountry skitouring trip Romania
Last weekend we have been to Iezer mountains on our annual ski touring trip there. I think this is the 4th year that we made it here, and it is my 4th year of ski touring :)))... man, time flies so fast...
Each year was similar but somehow different. In terms of snow conditions, this year was a lot more snow and we had some pow in the first descent on the upper part near the ridge of the mountain. Being so hot all of a sudden, I don't think it was 100% safe to try new lines or spots, so we stayed chill and shred the classic descent from the ridge directly to Iezer refuge. Maybe next year we will try a descent from the peak, that will be cool ;D. I remember last year I was feeling brave and took a climb just beneath the peak. My luck was that fog come and ruin my descent :))))

Climate change impacts low altitude ski resorts
(7 Feb 2019) LEADIN:
Meteorologists are predicting the next five years will be much hotter than average, maybe even record-breaking.
In 2018 much of Europe had its warmest year on record. Records go back to 1880.
The United Kingdom Met Office has forecast that the next five years could be warmer than the last four years.
This is not good news for skiers in Belgium where lower lying mountain ranges have seen the days with enough snow cut by a third in the last 40 years and average snowfall halved in the last fifty years.
STORYLINE:
Welcome to Belgium's oldest ski resort, established in the 1930s in Ovifat, near the German border, 150 kilometres (93 miles) east of Brussels.
But two weeks after the first snow appeared, the resort has closed for the season (on February 6, 2019) after just nine days of skiing.
Maarten De Schepper has driven an hour and a half to get here for a ride on a sled with his five year old son Lou.
Maybe the seasons are moving a bit, I have got also this feeling that summer has lasted longer. I feel that you could say that something is really changing.
Alain Jacquens moved to Belgium five years ago from the Caribbean island of Martinique and says he has noticed changes in the weather.
The hailstorms that we would expect here, they happened over there (in the Caribbean). There were hailstones this big. People got injured and an emergency was declared. In Guadeloupe there was snow this year and here we have a tropical winter.
Seventy-six year-old Gunther Elsen runs this ski resort. A former ski instructor and tennis coach, he has been with the Ovifat ski club for over 50 years.
He says there have always been times with abundant snowfall and years the slopes didn't open at all.
The winter of 1963 allowed for 100 days of skiing in the Ardennes, down to an average of seventeen these days, with no skiing at all during the winter of 2007.
Sometimes we have to open the slopes at the last minute, in the morning after it snowed overnight. We have to phone here and there to find people to come and work on the slope says Elsen.
Nobody makes a profit here, and there are no high tech ski passes says Elsen.
It is very difficult to work with season passes because we are never assured of snow. If we were to ask for a flat fee people would be unhappy and when there is snow it is a stampede.
My biggest anguish is to give people just a taste for it. I was a ski instructor, and our worry has been that we would offer kids a week of this sport and they would maybe never do it again he adds.
Pascal Mormal is a meteorologist with the Belgian Royal Meteorological Institute.
He monitors snowfall in Belgium and in the Ardennes region. He and his French colleagues at the Centre dEtudes de la Neige in Grenoble have seen average snow heights at lower altitudes almost halve in 50 years.
Mormal says we may still see record snowfall in places like Austria this year, but the glaciers are melting there, and in the foothills North of the Alps there is less and less snowfall.
All of this is related to global warming.
We observe a decrease in snow heights in all low mountain ranges, in the Jura and Vosges regions of France, in the Sauerland in Germany. We really see that all massifs below 1,500 or even 1,800 meters are impacted by less snowfall and rising temperatures.
He adds that there are wide variations in snowfall year by year, but his measurements show the average over the long term is decreasing.
