Sky High Wilderness Ranch - Whitehorse, Yukon
During our stay in the Yukon the GCAT team was treated to a proper Arctic experience at the Sky High Wilderness Ranch. Like their mono says, it's the 'adventure of a lifetime'.
Located on the shores of Fish Lake only 30 minutes from Whitehorse is where you will find the Sky High Wilderness Ranch. One unique aspect of this experience is that all of the cabins are 'off the grid' meaning that there is no electricity or indoor plumbing. Visitors are thrown back into the simplicity of living and are treated to some time away from television, the internet, and telephones. After a day in the fresh outdoors guests gather around the kitchen table for dinner by candlelight and gas lanterns, and after eating can enjoy a round of cards or relax with a book.
The Sky High Wilderness Ranch has a kennel of 150 sled dogs and 24 horses so it is an animal lover's paradise. Winter adventures include dog sledding, snow machine adventures, moonlight mushing, and Aurora viewing by night. During the summer you can saddle up and do an adventure by horseback, go fishing, trekking, or overnight camping.
The GCAT team jumped at the opportunity for an outing of dog sledding. The friendly staff taught us how to harness our dog team, hook up our sleds and most importantly made us feel comfortable in this extreme northern environment. It was also a good reminder of just how much fun you can have outdoors in the cold and snow.
Regardless if you are just looking for a wilderness retreat or an extreme northern Canadian experience the Sky High Wilderness Ranch can give you a trip to remember. A big thanks goes out to Gary, Jocelyne, Ian and the entire team of dogs.
Next time we'll stay longer !

“Yukon, the wild quest ” or the passion for the origins of humankind (english sub)
Kim Pasche was barely 20 years old when he left his hometown of Moudon, Switzerland to explore barefoot the heart of Canada’s North. At the end of the journey there is Man’s origin, something Kim Pasche has searched and questionned since his childhood. Driven by archeology and the wild life, he has since experimented Early Life’s techniques and facts in the vastness of Yukon, a journey in the heart of time, nature and humanity.
Touching the origin of things… A quest that has driven Kim Pasche since his childhood. Passionate by nature, it is there that he first questionned artifacts and everyday gestures to attempt discovering their secrets.
His vocation will reach its full extent when his path crosses the ones of Early Life specialists. Then, a new horizon opens before Kim: Experimental archeology that he practices in trainings or in collaboration with museums in the French-speaking part of Switzerland. This land becomes quickly too small for the young man’s procedure that he establishes progressively. In order to come as close as possible to life’s conditions of a hunter-gatherer and to better understand them, Kim Pasche has to search a playground matching the height of his quest. He will end up finding the appropriate wild life within Canada’s North, in Yukon, a territory as big as Spain and almost unpopulated. For ten years, Kim has spent several months per year deep in the wild forest in order to question primitive life. It is a journey through space and time between two worlds, from the dawn of humanity to our modern civilization.

Dogsledding in the Yukon Territory.

A touch of Japan in a wild world - Whitehorse, Yukon
Baked Café and Bakery, in downtown Whitehorse, is at odds with the rugged, isolated wilderness that surrounds it. The Café is not a place that you'd image to find in the 'far north'. To the contrary it is surprisingly indicative of the modern trend of Whitehorse, the capitol of the Yukon. Gone are the old days of ragged, rough establishments and enter the new wave of trendy, sophisticated shops and stores. You could transplant Baked Café and Bakery onto Young's street in Toronto, rue Sainte-Catherine in Montreal or Water Street in Vancouver and it would be a fit right in to the cosmopolitan style of those cities.
Baked Café is a trendy cafe full of hipsters, granolas, and urban professionals - a tightly-packed sea of thick-rimmed glasses, Macbook Pros (free wifi), and dreadlocks. It has a great selection of snacks for all diets (wheat-free, etc), great main meals, delicious coffee and fresh juices. It's casual, comfortable environment is often crowded and buzzing with energy, often hosting art exhibits and song nights. And it always offers friendly, attentive service and at affordable prices.
Another surprising feature of Baked Café and Bakery is the ethnicity of the owner and some of the staff -- Japanese! The GCAT crew was surprised to find so many Japanese working there but Mitsue Ozeki, the kitchen manager, said we shouldn't be surprised at all. She told us that Whitehorse was full of foreigners who have come to the north and fallen in love with the land, the culture and the people. Mitsue has been in Whitehorse for ten years and has seen more and more foreigners move to the north and live happily ever after.
After some cake and coffee we had to move on but we told Mitsue that she shouldn't be surprised if she sees one of our crew moving here sometime as well -- that's how impressed we were with our first impression of Whitehorse!
Next holiday plan on hitting the 'Land of the Midnight Sun' and don't forget to stop by Baked Café and Bakery while in Whitehorse. Great coffee, comfortable couches and Japanese waitresses -- just another day in Whitehorse!
