Ipswich Art Gallery
A visit to Ipswich isn't complete without checking out its award-winning Ipswich Art Gallery. Occupying a beautifully restored heritage building in the Ipswich Central Business District that was the first town hall built in Queensland, the gallery has an enviable collection of over 2,000 works.
One of the most visited regional art galleries in the country, the Ipswich Art Gallery has constantly changing exhibitions with local artists on show alongside contemporary and historically significant artists such as Margaret Olley, Ben Quilty and William Robinson. It's also a social history museum with heritage displays and complementary workshops, making it truly a cultural and social hub for Ipswich locals and visitors alike.
The gallery is renowned for its school holiday programs, children's exhibitions and performances in The Children's Gallery, which was Australia's first permanent interactive gallery space for under-12s. A spacious light-filled area upstairs is the ideal place for the children as well as their parents to enjoy what's on offer. No wonder it's a popular retreat during school holiday times.

Exploring Workshops Rail Museum, Ipswich
Exploring Workshops Rail Museum, Ipswich
A day out exploring Australia’s oldest operating railway workshops is a rite of passage for kids growing in South East Queensland. Climb onboard as we discover why this homage to all things rail is such a hit with families.
Kids of all ages – even Mum and Dad sized ones – will love the model railways here.
They’ll also jump at the chance to drive a train and toot the horn in the simulators.
Kids can also get hands-on to discover the science behind how trains operate with big, fun and easy-to-understand displays.
More than a museum, the grounds are home to an authentic heritage rail workshop operating as it has done for 150 years, so be sure to take a free tour behind the scenes to where the real work of restoring engines takes place.
Little ones will also love the large, rubber-floored Nipper’s Railway play area where they can ride pedal bikes around train tracks or climb on toy engines at a kid-sized train station.
As a nice bonus, the historic Workshops buildings themselves are fun to explore. Our kids were as taken with all the giant old rail warehouses as they were by all the contents.
While you’re in town, why not make a day of it.
The Ipswich Art Gallery was one of the first in Australia to have a dedicated kid’s space, with exhibitions changing regularly. It’s in d'Arcy Doyle Place in the CBD, an area rich with historic buildings and food and shopping options.
Or head for a play in Queen’s Park with its array of gardens, wildlife and play areas.
