Similarities Between Russian and Persian
In this language challenge episode, two Russian speakers, Alex and Bogdan, compete against two Persian speakers, Sara and Amir. There are some intriguing similarities between the two languages that may surprise a lot of people. Although one is a Slavic language and the other is Iranian, due to the historical interactions between them, Russian and Persian have adopted several words from one another. Russian is an East Slavic language and an official language in Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan. Russian is the most widely spoken of all Slavic languages, with a very significant number of speakers in Latvia, Moldova, Ukraine, and to a lesser extent, the other post-Soviet states. Russian and Persian are both Indo-European languages, and Russian, being a Slavic language, is one of the four living members of the East Slavic languages. The Persian language, which at times is referred to by its endonym Farsi, is a Western Iranian language within the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. It holds official status in Iran, Afghanistan and Tajikistan. It is referred to as Dari in Afghanistan, and Tajik in Tajikistan. It is also widely spoken in other parts of the Central Asia, the Middle East, and South Asia. Among the neighbouring empires and nations, Persian was considered a prestigious cultural language and over the course of centuries it influenced many of these neighbouring languages, such as the Turkic languages in Central Asia, Caucasus, and Anatolia, neighboring Iranian languages, as well as Armenian, Georgian, and Indo-Aryan languages, especially Urdu. It also exerted some influence on Arabic, particularly the Bahrani and Iraqi dialects of Arabic. Persian was the first language in the Muslim world to break through Arabic's monopoly on writing, and the writing of poetry in Persian was established as a court tradition in many eastern courts. Persian and Russian have also influenced one another, not to the same extent as the aforementioned languages, but the influence and similarities are noteworthy. Historical contacts between Russia and Iran have consisted of collaboration and rivalry. Iranians and Russians have a very long history of geographic, economic, and socio-political interaction. The two countries also share a strong economic pact and have recently expanded on their historical ties. Ever since Iran has been placed under brutal sanctions by much of the Western world, Russia has become one of the only major powers in the world to continue its economic and military partnership with Iran. Iran and Russia are strategic allies and key trading partners. Iran is the only country in Western Asia that has been invited to join the Collective Security Treaty Organization, Russia's own international treaty organization in response to NATO. In addition to the Iranian embassy in Moscow, and the Russian embassy in Tehran, there is an Iranian consulate in the Russian cities of Kazan and Astrakhan, and Russian consulates in Iranian cities of Rasht and Isfahan.

Shelling of eastern Ghouta continues despite Russia's call for 'humanitarian pause'
'푸틴 지시' 시리아 '일일 휴전'에도 일부 교전…'네탓' 공방
We now catch up on the latest in Syria….
Airstrikes by pro-government forces are reportedly continuing despite Russian President Putin's call for a so-called humanitarian pause.
Ro Aram has the details.
The humanitarian pause, as Putin put it, was meant to allow for civilians to evacuate the rebel-held area.
It was meant to start Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. local time, but activists on the ground reported airstrikes and artillery fire from pro-regime positions within minutes of when the pause was meant to start.
Russia and its ally Syria, however, blamed the rebels for the collapse of the truce.
They accused rebels of shelling what Moscow has described as humanitarian corridors, meant to give civilians safe passage out of the enclave.
The insurgents denied such shelling, and UN Security Council members, including the U.S., have been demanding Moscow implement a 30-day ceasefire resolution adopted on Saturday.
Meanwhile, Russia's proposed pause in hostilities is also meant to allow humanitarian aid to come in.
But, the International Committee of the Red Cross says the five-hour pause is too short for delivery of vast amounts of life-saving aid.
Hundreds of people have died during the bombardment, which intensified about a week and a half ago, marking one of the deadliest in the Syrian civil war - now entering its eighth year.
U.S. media also reported Tuesday, citing UN experts, that North Korea has been sending supplies, such as acid-resistant tiles, valves and pipes to Syria that could be used to produce chemical weapons.
The allegations came two days after a suspected chlorine attack by the Syrian government on eastern Ghouta, which Damascus denies.
A yet-to-be-released UN report suggests Damascus paid Pyongyang for the supplies via several front companies.
The report was said to have been compiled by a UN panel assessing the North's compliance with international sanctions.
