Take a guided tour of... the global tech company based in Howth's lighthouse
When Robin Blandford wanted a bigger office for his company, a generic space in a business park wasn’t exactly what he had in mind.
Blandford, the founder of D4H Readiness and Response, wanted a home that made sense for his company, which develops software for emergency response teams worldwide.
One day when he was kayaking in Dublin Bay, he found the perfect spot – Baily Lighthouse near Howth Head in north Dublin. A few calls later and a lease with the Commissioners of Irish Lights made it a done deal.
“The office works perfectly because it speaks our brand. This building has been saving lives for 202 years now, and we say we’re giving it another chance to do just that,” Blandford says.
Recently, Fora has taken readers on a series of tours of unusual workspaces, including a coffee shop in a corrugated shipping container and a tech company with its own Irish pub.
This week, Blandford showed us around his company’s lighthouse:
An American Tries riding a Harley Davidson in Ireland
My first video test footage on the bike. I'm starting at Hills Garage in Bray and ending up in Brown Bros locksmiths in Dun Laoghaire, Ireland. I'll add commentary later as I figure out how to do the mic thing. Then you'll be sorry. I'll also see about doing sumfin bout the wind noise.
The exhaust at this point is ridiculously loud. It's the V&H short shots staggered with standard baffles. I've since replaced them with the Super Q baffles, which brings them down to a dull roar. I highly suggest them if you have neighbors. One of the reasons I am putting about at low revs besides the wet roads is because if I rev it any, the noise basically stuns everyone within a 30' radius and causes great panic and destruction.
One thing I will say is this trip was less than 15 minutes, and yet no less than three vehicles decided that they could make better use of my lane than I could. That's a marked difference from when I brought this thing back with me from the UK. During that 7 hour ride, no one cut me off, and many pulled aside to allow me to pass. Riding in Ireland is reminding me a lot of Southern California, which were some of the most dangerous drivers I have ever seen in my life, and I have been to podunk places in Mexico. Only, unlike Cali, there's added weather hazard for fun.
Donabate and Portrane [Ireland]
My friend and I went to discover the hidden gems surrounding her hometown and we ended up in some amazing places. Donabate is about a half hours train ride from Dublin City and Portrane is a short bus ride from Donabate.

Giro D'Italia Cycling In Drogheda Ireland 11th May 2014
Giro cycling arrives in Drogheda Ireland.
The world's best cyclists have been taking part in the Irish leg of the Giro d'Italia in Belfast since Friday.
Now it's Dublin's turn to get in the pink as the race for the famous Maglia Rosa (pink jersey) arrives in the Republic.
The first cross-border stage of the three-week race will travel from the Mall in Armagh this morning to Dublin's Merrion Square, passing through Dundalk, Drogheda, Balbriggan, Malahide and Clontarf en route.
Up to 300,000 people are expected to turn out to support the event today.
The general public can view the race along the route. However, Dublin City Council is advising spectators to line the route from the O2 along the quays to welcome Giro d'Italia to Dublin city, as viewing will be very restricted in the last kilometre as the race approaches the finish line.
Despite a number of road closures in the city centre, Dublin City Council has promised there will be minimal disruption and is encouraging those travelling to witness the Giro d'Italia to use public transport where possible.
The official caravan for the Giro d'Italia will stop in Dundalk, Drogheda, Balbriggan, Malahide and Dublin with promotional items.
