Donegal Town Stopover - Places to Visit in Donegal, Ireland
Donegal Town, Ireland - Through the digging that we have been doing throughout Ireland and Northern Ireland to bring those historical famous places as well as those hidden gems which not all people know about, we have come to Donegal Town in Ireland and the stopover we have made.
Donegal town is a town in county Donegal in Ulster, Ireland, and which is found at the mouth of the River Eske and Donegal Bay and overshadowed by the Blue Stack Mountains. The center of this small town is called the Diamond and it is the place for music, poetic, and cultural gatherings in the area.
This was a quick visit to Donegal town - we didn't get deeper into the place to know what could be visited inside and what are the places one could stay at - but we got the chance to reach the Donegal Friary. The Donegal Friary is located on the outskirts of the town where the River Eske joins the Donegal Bay. This friary which was damaged during the war that took place after was considered one of the most influential Franciscan houses in Ireland but which is now nothing but the fragments of the church and the cloister arcade. Visiting this friary is considered beneficial because it will reveal a lot about the history of the place.
We reached Donegal town, got the chance to get inside the friary, walked through the ruins, and enjoyed the scene that combines the old ruins, the water, as well as the birds in one thing; it was really a different experience and a quick visit to a historical place that dates back to the seventeenth century which those visiting Donegal should do.
The Donegal friary is now considered some ruins and remains scattered around the area and these ruins are actually divided into rooms. There is the nave, the tower, the chancel, the aisle, the transept, the chapel, the cloister Garth, the cloister walk, the sacristy, the east range, the north range, the west range, and the Red Hugh O'Donnell.
In addition to visiting the Donegal friary, there are other things one could do in Donegal Town ( and which are beneficial for those who will be staying there for a couple of days to know more about. Those willing to make a tour in Donegal should visit Donegal Castle - which has been believed that there is a tunnel found linking between it and the friary - which is located in the centre of Donegal town. Walking the Blue Stack Way which is a 47 km long from Donegal town to Ardara. There is also the Donegal Railway Heritage Center which will provide the tourists with information about how it used to be like to travel on the narrow gauge railways of county Donegal.
Never visit a place by just looking on those historical monuments and ruins, you should also give yourself the chance to visit those new places which might be worth it as well as be part of the activities that might be taking place in the town or city you are visiting; these things usually make the trip more unforgettable and filled with more fun.
So in addition to those things we have suggested about visiting Donegal town in Ireland, there are also some things which tourists should never forget about doing, such as getting on the Donegal Bay Waterbus which offers daily 75 to 80 minutes tours of Donegal Bay with its many different islands and wildlife. There is also the walking tour which one could bring a guided tour to walk through the hills and mountains of Donegal or the one hour walking tour that takes place in the historical part of Donegal city.
There are always different things one could do in every single city or town he/she is visiting even if the place is not much historical - which should never be the case because why would you be there in the first place? - all what the person will need to do is search, ask those who might have been in the city or town before, and go exploring themselves to come out with the best outcomes at the end.
There are different things to do and different places to visit in Ireland and that is the main reason behind helping you out with those places which we have been to and enjoyed our times - for the adults as well as the kids.
We have done a quick visit to Donegal and managed to come across the Donegal friary only but we will never deny the excitement we had while visiting a place that dates back to the seventeenth century.
There are different things to see in Ireland, such as the Trinity College Dublin which was found in 1592 ( you could also take a tour around Dublin city by buying a ticket to the hop-on hop-off bus tour ( as well as other places which you might be more creative to find, settle on, and eventually visit :-)
Have you ever been to Donegal town in Ireland? Have you visited any of the historical places found there? If you have already been there then share your experience with us, if not then once you take the decision, tell us more about how it goes eventually.

Gweedore is Irish-speaking parish in County Donegal, Ireland
Best watched in HD and sound.Gweedore (officially known by its Irish language name, Gaoth Dobhair, is an Irish-speaking parish located on the Atlantic coast of County Donegal in the Republic of Ireland. Gweedore stretches some 26 kilometres (16 mi) from Meenaclady in the north to Crolly in the south and around 14 kilometres (9 mi) from Dunlewey in the east to Magheraclogher in the west, and is one of Europe's most densely populated rural areas. It is the largest Irish-speaking parish in Ireland with a population of around 4,065, and is also the home of the northwest regional studios of the Irish-language radio service RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta, as well as an external campus of NUI Galway. Gweedore includes the villages Bunbeg, Derrybeg, Dunlewey, Crolly and Brinalack, and sits in the shade of Donegal's highest peak, Errigal.
Gweedore is known for being a cradle of the culture of Ireland, with old Irish customs, traditional music, theatre, Gaelic games and the Irish language playing a central and pivotal role in the lives of the local people. This, along with its scenery and many beaches, has made the area a popular tourist destination, especially with visitors from Northern Ireland. Gweedore and the neighbouring districts of Cloughaneely and the Rosses are collectively known locally as the three parishes, they form a social and cultural region distinct from the rest of the county, with Gweedore serving as the main centre for socialising and industry.
The Bunbeg Wreck, or Eddies Boat as it is also known, is a wrecked ship on Magherclogher Beach.(can be seen in video)The ship ran ashore here in the 1970s when it got into trouble on stormy waters. It has been here ever since a proud part of local heritage and is considered to be Gweedore’s very own Titanic. In order to get up close and personal with the ship the tide needs to be well out, but be assured it is well worth the effort!!

Hi, we are Erin and Francis, aka the Honeymooners! We love travel, animals, nature, space, music, coffee and good food….
...ABOUT US...
In 2016 we travelled extensively throughout South East Asia, and trekked all over the Himalayas of Nepal. We documented the entire trip on our Go Pro for our family and friends, but decided to post it all onto Youtube just for a bit of fun as well.
We are newlyweds, happily married since June 2019, and are now living out our dream goal we have had since our last overseas trip, of travelling the world for an entire year on our honeymoon. We have worked so hard towards this goal and want to document the entire journey with you all, so you can join us as we leave our footprints all over this beautiful world.
The world we live in is so diverse and rich with culture, yet the more we travel and the more people we meet along the way, we realise that people share so many similarities no matter what their background is.

Churchill and Gartan County Donegal
Churchill and Gartan County Donegal. Churchill is a small village located 8 miles form Donegal's main town, Letterkenny. The name derives from its location on top of a small hilltop. There are 3 traditional style Irish pubs in the village - a fast disappearing sight in modern Ireland!
Just to the north of Churchill the River Lennon runs into the beautiful Lough Gartan. Gartan is the birthplace of Colmcille - one of the foremost Irish Saints who founded the famous monastery on the Isle of Iona in Scotland. The Colmcille Heritage Centre on the shores of Lough Gartan celebrates his life and work. Nearby is the Glebe Gallery which contains the renowned Derek Hill Collection of Victorian and 20th century art works.
Gartan Outdoor Pursuits Centre is situated on the shores of Loch Gartan and is a very popular destination for adventure holiday enthusiasts.
Day Zero - Living in a Remote Cottage in Donegal (Ireland)
For the next two months, I will be living alone in a remote cottage in Ireland. I want to use this time to enjoy solitude, live simply and experience the surrounding wilderness through winter.
I will document this experience as much as possible but there is no cell service in the home so I will need to go out into the fields and hills to upload videos.
