HOW EXPENSIVE IS KYRGYZSTAN? | BACKPACKING KYRGYZSTAN | VISIT KYRGYZSTAN |
In this video, I talk about how expensive is Kyrgyzstan. I explain how what the overall daily costs are and how much things are like hotels, taxis and food.
Kyrgyzstan is a sovereign state in Central Asia. Kyrgyzstan is a landlocked country with mountainous terrain. It is bordered by Kazakhstan to the north, Uzbekistan to the west and southwest, Tajikistan to the southwest and China to the east. Its capital and largest city is Bishkek.
Kyrgyzstan's recorded history spans over 2,000 years, encompassing a variety of cultures and empires. Although geographically isolated by its highly mountainous terrain, which has helped preserve its ancient culture, Kyrgyzstan has been at the crossroads of several great civilizations as part of the Silk Road and other commercial and cultural routes. Though long inhabited by a succession of independent tribes and clans, Kyrgyzstan has periodically fallen under foreign domination and attained sovereignty as a nation-state only after the breakup of the Soviet Union in 1991.
Since independence, Kyrgyzstan has officially been a unitary parliamentary republic, although it continues to endure ethnic conflicts, revolts, economic troubles, transitional governments and political conflict. Kyrgyzstan is a member of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Eurasian Economic Union, the Collective Security Treaty Organization, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, the Turkic Council, the Türksoy community and the United Nations.
Ethnic Kyrgyz make up the majority of the country's 6 million people, followed by significant minorities of Uzbeks and Russians. Kyrgyz is closely related to other Turkic languages, although Russian remains widely spoken and is an official language, a legacy of a century of Russification. The majority of the population are non-denominational Muslims.[18] In addition to its Turkic origins, Kyrgyz culture bears elements of Persian, Mongolian, and Russian influence.

Eating Kyrgyzstan: Traditional Kyrgyz food in Bishkek
During one of our last days in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan we revisited one of our favorite restaurants in the city to eat traditional Kyrgyz food. Food in Kyrgyzstan is closely related to that of Kazakh cuisine and we ordered all of our favorites including Plov, Shashlik, Manti, Lagman & Kymyz. Traditional Kyrgzy food revolves heavily around horse meat, mutton and beef along with a heavy dose of dairy products influenced by its historically nomadic culture. Below you'll find more information about the specific dishes.
Plov (плов) – Also known as pilaf or paloo, this is a mixed rice dish that features pieces of meat (usually mutton, beef, or chicken) and shredded carrots. It is cooked in a cast-iron cauldron and it is delicious.
Shashlik (шашлы́к): shashlyk (meaning skewered meat) was originally made of lamb. Nowadays it is also made of pork or beef depending on local preferences and religious observances. The skewers are either threaded with meat only, or with alternating pieces of meat, fat, and vegetables, such as bell pepper, onion, mushroom and tomato.
Manti (манты) – These are steamed dumplings filled with ground meat and onions. You can also get vegetarian ones filled with pumpkin or potatoes.
Samsa (самсы) – This is a popular street snack. Picture a flaky pastry pocket stuffed with ingredients which include: chicken, cheese, cabbage, beef, or other fillings.
Lagman (лагман) – Laghman is a noodle dish which can be served as a soup or fried, and it features chopped peppers with a spicy vinegar sauce.
Ashlyam fu (Ашлям фу) – This is a cold and spicy soup that has meat, veggies, cold noodles and starchy noodles.
Besh barmak (бешбармак) – The name of this dish translates to ‘five fingers’ because it is so tasty it is meant to be eaten with your whole hand. It is a plate of steamed noodles and onions with meat, which can be lamb or horse.
Kymyz (кумыс) – Can I offer you a glass of fermented mare’s milk? It tastes nothing like what you’d imagine – it’s salty, fizzy and it kind of reminded me of Korean makgeolli – so give it a try.

Eating Kyrgyzstan: Traditional Kyrgyz food in Bishkek Travel Video Transcript:
So it is lunchtime here in Bishkek (Бишкек), Kyrgyzstan (Киргизия) and today we are going to be having a feast. We are going to be sampling all of the traditional dishes that we've been eating over the last three weeks because that is how long we've been traveling in the country. So we're ordering a big spread. This is probably enough food for like five or six people but Sam and I are going to try and eat it all and just showcase what Central Asian cuisine is all about. So we hope you enjoy.
So we're almost done the meal. Any particular favorites?
So stuffed.
Um, the shashlik (шашлы́к) was amazing. That was so so good. It was so juicy and they don't really put a lot of spices on the beef but it just has like that natural flavor so that was really nice. It was smokey, tender flavor. Love that. It was good. And also the rice. I'm usually not a very big fan of rice but it was really good. It was like wild brown rice so that was really tasty.
Yeah, those are two of my favorites as well. And I'm going to add that I really like the manti (манты). The pumpkin dumplings. Of course. Dumplings.
So that wraps up our feast of feasts. It was an amazing like traditional Kyrgyz meal. We ordered so much food that we're actually taking a lot of it home. This is probably enough either for three or four people and in terms of the price it came to one thousand two hundred Som which right now is seventeen US dollars. So that was incredible value. I mean we got three different kinds of drinks, we got tea, we got a liter of Pepsi, we got a liter of mare's milk plus all of that food that we showed you including the bread, the dumplings, the meat, the rice, the noodles. So you can come here and have an epic feast and it is not going to cost you a fortune.

Things to do in Kyrgyzstan Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Hey guys we're in Kyrgyzstan. Yeah, new country for both of us so that is pretty exciting. First time in Central Asia so we are stoked to be here. Yeah and over the next few days we are going to be horse-trekking in Song Köl so we're going to take you along but before we get there we're making a little stop. First up Burana Tower right here. So we're going to climb to the top. Are you ready? Yes.
Greetings from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan! Hello from Central Asia. It is our first time here and we are going to be spending a few days here in the capital. So we're going to take you on a little tour and show you fifteen things to do around Bishkek (Бишкек). It should be fun.
And that’s a wrap for our trip to Bishkek (Бишкек). As you can probably tell from this video, this city is the kind of place that you experience as opposed to ticking off attractions, so it ended up being a fairly relaxing trip after a few busy weeks of travel around Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан - Киргизия). As always, if you have any suggestions of things to do in Bishkek, feel free to share your tips with fellow travellers in the comments section below. See you next time!
Hey guys we're at the World Nomad Games (Дүйнөлүк көчмөндөр оюндары) in Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан) and this is basically like the Olympics for Nomadic Games and Culture.
So we're going to show you around. We're going to be hear for several days but first the Opening Night Ceremony.
The following morning we went up to the jailoo, also known as the pasture, where they had set up a folk village so visitors could wander around and learn about Kyrgyz culture. After catching the opening dance, we set out to visit the various camps, each showcasing a different region.
So it is lunchtime here in Bishkek (Бишкек), Kyrgyzstan (Киргизия) and today we are going to be having a feast. We are going to be sampling all of the traditional dishes that we've been eating over the last three weeks because that is how long we've been traveling in the country. So we hope you enjoy.
Good morning from Kyrgyzstan (Кыргызстан). It is time for a day trip because we've been spending a lot of time at the World Nomad Games and it is time to get out and get to know the country a little bit. So we're taking a day trip to Karakol (Каракол). We're going to be doing some hiking, visiting waterfalls.
Well good morning. It is Saturday here in Bishkek (Бишкéк) and it is our last day in the city so we figured why not get out of the city get close to nature.
So it is time for another apartment tour. Right now we're in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan. We've been traveling around the country for three weeks and we've spent ten of those days here in the capital.

Proto-Indo-European marḱ- (horse), possibly originated in the domestication of wild horses by the Proto-Turkic Botai culture of northern Kazakhstan (4th-6th millenium BCE):
Antoine Meillet assumed that this word was an early loanword in Germanic and Celtic from an unknown source (Meillet 1926: 229). This idea was developed by T. Gamkrelidze and V. Ivanov, who had seen in it a borrowing from an Altaic language (or dialect). Indeed, Celto-Germanic *mark- has parallels with Altaic *morV- (Mong. mörin, Kalm. morin ‘horse’; cf. Russ. merin ‘old horse, gelding,’ a late borrowing from Mong., cf. also Chin. ma - *mra, Tamil mā). Gamkrelidze and Ivanov explain this borrowing by early contacts of IE tribes with Altaic tribes. ... this word was not transported to Europe by IE migratory tribes, but was adopted in Central Europe by IE speaking tribes (Celts and Germans) from some Asiatic people, speaking Altaic and practising horse-riding. We mean the Scythians (and Sarmats) who came from Central Asia in the seventh century B.C., crossed the Caucasus and appeared in northern Iran and Asia Minor. Scythians may not have been Indo-European, but a mixture of nations of Central Asia, including some Turkish and Altaic elements. Their language, though remaining Iranian, carried a lot of borrowed non-Indo-European features. ... At the same time, we have to note that if our idea of the Scythian origin of the word *marḱ- is right, we are then dealing only with indirect contacts, maybe via Galatians, because this word was well-rooted in Celtic before Romanization and before Scythian and Sarmatic tribes moved to Europe in the second to third century A.D.

__________________________
Mallory & Douglas (2006: 141) illustrates that for Indo-Europeanist the option of the Euroasiatic loanword is also well-known. Mikhailova (2007: 4-9) has recently proposed that Celtic mark-os ‘saddle horse’ could be actually of Scythian origin, this being in its own turn an “Altaic” borrowing (everything inserted in a rather naïve Nostratic framework). Unfortunately, the philological argumentation does not exist out of Celtic, ...

__________________________
Beyond the certain Celtic and Germanic cognates it has been suggested that this putative PIE *márkos is related to a series of words for 'horse' that extend eastward, in non-IE languages, ... Thus we have Mongol morin, Chinese mā, Korean mal, Burmese mraŋ. Opinion is divided as to whether, if the PIE word belongs with the others, the PIE word is a borrowing from, say, pre-Mongol (which would also be the source of the Chinese word and that in turn the source of the Korean and Bumese) or the Mongol, Chinese, etc., words are ultimately borrowed from PIE. Under either borrowing scenario *márkos would have had to have been much more widespread in PIE than its Celtic and Germanic reflexes would suggest. .. it is difficult so see how one can match the western distribution of the IE cognates with the eastern distribution of its putatively non-IE borrowings or loans. The only major east to west movement of horses, after their initial domestication, was in the Iron Age where we have steppe horses which were introduced into the Carpathian basin by the Scythians.

...by bringing the Altaic material into consideration, the original meaning of the Proto-Indo-European word for ‘horse’ becomes clear. It did not mean ‘the swift one’ but, rather, ‘the spirited, violent, fiery, or wild one’. This could not have been seen on the basis of the Indo-European evidence alone. Both the Proto-Altaic and the Proto-Indo-European forms are to be derived from a Proto-Nostratic root *ʔekh- ‘to move quickly, to rage; to be furious, raging, violent, spirited, fiery, wild’.

Horse Games of Central Asia
The people of central Asia havea traditional nomadic culture, which revolves around horses. Even their games such as racing and wrestling are on horseback. The most unusual one is buzkashi (goat rugby) , where teams of players get a goat carcass on to their horses and then to a goal mound.... all the while fending off the other team members.

Kyrgyzstan is a place many have no idea about, and before The North Face athletes Leah Evans, Izzy Lynch and Mike Hopkins arrived to ski in the Tien Shan mountains, neither did they. In a country that is 80% mountains, skiing is offering glimmers of hope for the future. The crew embark on a trip that is part of a project to help generate employment opportunities for local Kyrgyz people after the collapse of the Soviet Union crippled the economy in the early 90's. Ski touring out of a traditional nomadic yurt, skiing perfect powder and first descents became a bonus at the end of an epic cultural adventure through the heart of Central Asia.

Moped Tour through Kyrgyzstan, goodbye Puch Maxi? (for now) | Maxi Touring Moped travel
4th Country on the Trip, I finally reach Kyrgyzstan and traverse the whole country to get into Tadjikistan. In 8 days I cover 1200km, however not all of them are done on my trusty Puch Maxi Moped, since I wanted to go to the Pamir Mountains with roads above 4000m I had to get a replacement for 2 weeks, because I knew the Maxi just couldn't do that.
In 2018 I did this trip where I shipped my Moped to Mongolia and rode it all the Way back home to Austria. In 3 Months I covered 13.000 kilometers crossed the Mongolian steppes and went through the Pamir Mountains. All in all it was an awesome adventure I wouldn't want to miss.

SUMMARY
=======
The Silk Road was an ancient network of trade routes that connected the East and West. It was central to cultural interaction between the regions for many centuries. The Silk Road refers to both the terrestrial and the maritime routes connecting East Asia and Southeast Asia with East Africa, West Asia and Southern Europe.
The Silk Road derives its name from the lucrative trade in silk carried out along its length, beginning in the Han dynasty (207 BCE–220 CE). The Han dynasty expanded the Central Asian section of the trade routes around 114 BCE through the missions and explorations of the Chinese imperial envoy Zhang Qian. The Chinese took great interest in the safety of their trade products and extended the Great Wall of China to ensure the protection of the trade route.Trade on the Road played a significant role in the development of the civilizations of China, Korea, Japan, India, Iran, Afghanistan, Europe, the Horn of Africa and Arabia, opening long-distance political and economic relations between the civilizations. Though silk was the major trade item exported from China, many other goods were traded, as well as religions, syncretic philosophies, sciences, and technologies. Diseases, most notably plague, also spread along the Silk Road. In addition to economic trade, the Silk Road was a route for cultural trade among the civilizations along its network.Traders in ancient history included the Bactrians, Sogdians, Syrians, Jews, Arabs, Iranians, Turkmens, Chinese, Malays, Indians, Somalis, Greeks, Romans, Georgians, Armenians, and Azerbaijanis. In June 2014, UNESCO designated the Chang'an-Tianshan corridor of the Silk Road as a World Heritage Site. The Indian portion is on the tentative site list.
