Ironbridge Gorge Museums
Ironbridge is a village on the River Severn, at the heart of the Ironbridge Gorge, in Shropshire, England.
The area around Ironbridge is described by those promoting it as a tourist destination as the Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. This description is based on the idea that Abraham Darby perfected the technique of smelting iron with coke, in Coalbrookdale, allowing much cheaper production of iron. However, the industrial revolution did not begin in one place, but in many.
In 1986 Ironbridge became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site (which covers the wider Ironbridge Gorge area) and has become a major tourist attraction within Shropshire.

Stepping back in time to 1900 at Blists Hill Victorian Town - a fantastic open air museum that's great for families, one of a group of 10 museums in Ironbridge Gorge, near Telford in Shropshire. The heart of Victorian Britain, with mines, tile works and iron foundries, it has been recreated with a high street (including a sweet shop and working print shop), its own Victorian style pre-decimal money to spend, and houses to visit. One of my own childhood favourites, I visited with my six-year-old to discover it's as good as I remembered - and the staff there are full of fascinating facts as ever. Visit for more information.

Blists Hill Victorian Town. A Living Museum. Shropshire.
Blists Hill is an open-air museum, one of ten museums operated by the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust, built on a former industrial complex located in the Madeley area of Telford, Shropshire, England. The museum attempts to recreate the sights, sounds and smells of a Victorian Shropshire town in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

A tour of UNESCO World Heritage site Ironbridge Gorge in western England - one of the cradles of the Industrial Revolution. Though you'd hardly know it these days, from the quiet valleys and pretty towns in the area! This bridge is the world's first bridge constructed entirely from iron, and was built as an advertisement for the local iron-makers' products!

The newly restored Iron Bridge in Ironbridge a presentation style video of the heritage bridge in Shropshire, UK.
The Iron Bridge is a beautiful and historic bridge that crosses the River Severn in Shropshire, England, dating back to the industrial revolution.
Opened in 1781, it was the first major bridge in the world to be made of cast iron, and was greatly celebrated after construction owing to its use of the new material.
In 1934 it was designated a Scheduled Ancient Monument and closed to vehicles.
Tolls for pedestrians were collected until 1950, when ownership of the bridge was transferred to Shropshire County Council.
It now belongs to the local council Telford and Wrekin Borough Council, and has recently been restored into the glorious rusty-red colour which it had when first built.
The bridge, the adjacent settlement of Ironbridge and the Ironbridge Gorge form the UNESCO Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site.
The bridge is a Grade 1 listed building and a waypoint on the South Telford Heritage Trail.
Visitors travel from all over the world to see the bridge, the gorge and the renowned museums of the small town which remains.

It's amazing that this Iron Bridge in Ironbridge, was the first ever Iron Bridge in the World. It is located near Telford.
It was previously restored in 1980 and they didn't do a bad job at that time. The Ironbridge Gorge World Heritage Site now has a Management Plan which is placed under regular review every ten years
Just down the road is the Museum of iron operated by the ironbridge gorge museum trust (museum).

Ironbridge is a village on the River Severn, at the heart of the Ironbridge Gorge, in Shropshire, England. It lies in the civil parish of The Gorge, in the borough of Telford and Wrekin. Ironbridge developed beside, and takes its name from, the famous Iron Bridge, a 30-metre (100 ft) cast iron bridge that was built across the river in 1779.
The area around Ironbridge is described by those promoting it as a tourist destination as the Birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. Darby's iron smelting was but one small part of this generalised revolution and was soon superseded by the great iron-smelting areas. However, the bridge – being the first of its kind fabricated from cast iron, and one of the few which have survived to the present day – remains an important symbol representative of the dawn of the industrial age.
By the 19th century, Ironbridge had had many well-known visitors, including Benjamin Disraeli, but by the mid-20th century the settlements and industries of the gorge were in decline. In 1986, though, Ironbridge became part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site (which covers the wider Ironbridge Gorge area) and has become a major tourist attraction within Shropshire. Most industries in Ironbridge are now tourist-related; however, the Merrythought teddy bear company (established in 1930) is still manufacturing in Ironbridge and has a small museum there too. Amongst other things, the village is still host to a Post Office, pharmacy, various pubs, cafés and many successful small shops.
On Thursday 10 July 2003 The Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh made a visit to Shropshire which included a visit to Ironbridge, and a walk over the bridge itself. An annual Coracle Regatta is held in August on the River Severn at Ironbridge, along with many other events throughout the year. This is mainly because the coracle-making family of Rogers lived in Ironbridge for several generations. Just outside Ironbridge in Coalbrookdale is the Ironbridge Institute, a partnership between the University of Birmingham and the Ironbridge Gorge Museum Trust offering postgraduate and professional development in heritage.

Iron Bridge
In 1777 work began on a cast iron bridge that would link the developing industrial town of Broseley on the south bank of the gorge with the mining town of Madeley on the north side.
The Iron Bridge was a turning point in British design and engineering. After it was built, cast iron came to be widely used in bridges, buildings and aqueducts. The bridge also had a considerable effect on the local area. Within 5 years a town started to grow up on the north side of the gorge and by 1810 it became known as Ironbridge.

Today I am exploring the Ironbridge Gorge with Lee Proudfoot, historian and guide, and in particular to wonder at the first iron bridge in the world.

Revolutionizing the Museum Experience at the Ironbridge Gorge Museums
The Ironbridge Gorge Museums are partnering with the University of Birmingham to revolutionize the way that museum visitors learn. Visitors at both the Coalbrookdale Museum of Iron and the Museum of Enginuity utilize touch tables to examine artifacts and documents up-close, play interactive games, and work together to make discoveries.
The museums can easily change out content on the touch tables, encouraging guests to return and experience a new virtual exhibit each time.

I could have added so much more to this video...I may have to do an addendum at some point. In 1986 the Ironbridge Gorge was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List, making it one of the first in the UK to have that honour. There are so many museums on site exploring the history of the Gorge, the Darby family, iron making and Victorian life.

The Iron Bridge - Shropshire
Back in my university days I would ride from Priorslee Halls (NE Telford) along the South Telford Heritage Trail, past Blists Hill museum to the beautiful Iron Bridge Gorge. It was a most pleasant experience to sit in one of the cafe's by the riverside, drinking a nice cup of coffee and a slice of morish apple pie.
The Historical Iron Bridge along with many other interesting sights in the Iron Bridge Gorge area make a terrific day out for the whole family.
