Visiting Isabela Island, Galapagos Islands, Ecuador
Isabela Island is the ultimate Galapagos paradise where nature and wildlife dominate the landscape!
Due to its somewhat remote location, Isabela is not always visited on Galapagos cruises or included in Galapagos tour itineraries, which is an absolute shame!
Isabela was our favourite island in the Galapagos and it’s a destination you just can’t miss while in the Galapagos! Here is why..

Isabela Island Galapagos Ecuador- Wall of tears & Sierra Negra Volcan tour
Isabela Island is the largest island of the Galápagos with an area of 4,640 square kilometres and length of 100 kilometres almost four times larger than Santa Cruz, the second largest of the archipelago. It was named after Queen Isabella of Spain. It was originally named Albemarle after the Duke of Albemarle. The island strides the equator.
best things to do:
- Rent a Bike and ride to the Wall of tears.
- Book a tour up the second largest Volcan crater in the world (Sierra Negra)
- Snorkel with sea-lions at Concha La Perla
- Book a Kajak tour to paddle through the harbour area and see the penguins.
- Take a night-swim at the harbour to see plankton glow in the dark.

Elizabeth Bay, West Isabela Island, Galápagos Islands - Ecuador, South America
A chance to see the much less visited West side of Isabela Island & the mangroves of Elizabeth Bay. Serene turtles, a sea lion eating a snake & on the way back a large group of penguins just hanging out. Love the Galápagos Islands! Isabela West, Tagus Cove, The Galápagos Islands - Ecuador, South America
In 2019 I spent 8 Days on an amazing Boat Tour Of The Galápagos Islands. Here is a selection of short video diaries of my trip. Day 6 – West Isabela Island. Our final stop on Isabela was Tagus Cove. From the panga, we could see the unexpected sight of graffiti up the cliffs which jarred against everything I had seen & heard over my time on the islands. The writing was etched by sailors scratching the names of their vessels & the date on the rock. The trick was to try & get yours the highest. The oldest is from 1836. This puts a whole other perspective on it. To see more of my adventures why not subscribe to my blog?
Day trip to Isabela Island, Galapagos Ep.2
In this second episode (Ep.2) of the Galapagos series I travel from Santa Cruz to Isabela island. This last one is the largest island of the Galapagos and one of the most volcanic active places on
earth. While very far from being enough, my day trip gives you a glimpse of what you can expect. If had to do it all over again I would stay on this island for a few days to further explore.
If you enjoyed this video I would really appreciate you

What to do on Isabela Island in the Galapagos
This week we take a speed boat from Santa Cruz to Isabela in the Galapagos Islands. Isabela is the second largest of the Galapagos archipelago, but it is much quieter than Santa Cruz, and has some great snorkel spots!
We rent bikes to explore the beautiful island, snorkel with Sea Lions, save a Puffer Fish, and see the Wall of Tears! Isabela has one of the best snorkel spots we have ever had the chance to dive! There are rays, sea lions, and fish in a small bay that has a dock to swim off.
The island is over 1 million years old and is one of the youngest islands in the archipelago near the Galapagos hot spot. There are 6 volcanoes that helped form the Galapagos islands, all of them are still active except for volcano Ecuador. This area is one of the most volcanically active on earth.
The island is filled with a multitude of wildlife, some notable species are penguins, marine iguanas, boobies, pelicans, lightfoot crabs, hawks, doves, finches and much more.
The most notable things to do when you visit Isabela is visit Volcan Wolf, which is home to the Galapagos pink Iguanas. You can also go snorkelling at los tuneles or los tunnels, it’s a great place to see sharks, sea horses, penguins and a variety of other marine life. If your looking for a good hike or bike ride, we recommend heading out to the wall of tears. The wall of tears was constructed by prisoners many years ago. The reason for the construction was to keep the prisoners busy.
We had a ton of fun on Isla Isabela, it is one of the most beautiful islands in the Galapagos.
Next week we explore San Cristobal and dive Kicker Rock with some Sharks!

The introduction of alien species onto the environmentally fragile Galapagos Islands is a hot issue to the conservationists. When 100,000 goats invaded the islands and threatened the survival of extraordinary rare breeds that call the Ecquadorian islands home, an extreme solution was chosen to combat the conservation nightmare. Isabela Island, Urbina Bay Snorkel, The Galápagos Islands - Ecuador, South America
In 2019 I spent 8 Days on an amazing Boat Tour Of The Galápagos Islands. Here is a selection of short video diaries of my trip. Day 5 - Urbina Bay – An Afternoon With The Turtles The snorkelling for the afternoon was not the clearest but we were told that this was a great place to spot turtles. My mask was fogged up but it was still spectacular! There were so many turtles & they were totally unfazed by our presence. It was a special opportunity to just be able to float above them. In 2019 I spent 8 Days on an amazing Boat Tour Of The Galápagos Islands. Here is a selection of short video diaries of my trip. Day 6 – West Isabela Island. The walk was beautiful & a real treat again for the bird fans in the group, with sights of several species of finch & mockingbirds. The crater lake is filled with salt water, percolated through the rock from the sea with twice the salinity. Isabela Island is the largest of the archipelago & basically created from 5 active volcanoes, brought together by the lava produced from them. The viewpoint from beyond Darwin Lake is the best vantage point to see this, along with both sides of the island. To see more of my adventures why not subscribe to my blog?
