Six kilometers after turning onto the Battle Camp Range road, at the Cooktown end, you come to Isabella Falls. This lovely set of falls tend to run all year.

Cultural history of Black Mountain National Park:

The National Park's Black Mountains are a heavily significant feature of the Kuku Nyungkal people's cultural landscape known locally to Aboriginal Australians as Kalkajaka (trans: place of spear).

Queensland's Department of Environment and Natural Resources has been advised of at least four sites of particular mythological significance within the Black Mountains as follows:[5]

There are at least four sites of religious or mythological significance on the mountain. These are the Kambi, a large rock with a cave where flying-foxes are found; Julbanu, a big grey kangaroo-shaped rock looking toward Cooktown; Birmba, a stone facing toward Helenvale where sulphur-crested cockatoos are seen; and a taboo place called Yirrmbal near the foot of the range.

The Black Mountain also features strongly in local, more non-Aboriginal cultural landscapes, some of which has also been described by Queensland's Department of Environment and Resource Management as follows:[5]

When European colonists arrived late last century, they added to the many Aboriginal legends of the area with a few of their own. Stories abound of people, horses and whole mobs of cattle disappearing into the labyrinth of rocks, never to be seen again

It is believed that those who vanished most probably fell into one of the chasms under the rocks or after entering one of these places became lost. It is estimated only three in ten would survive such falls, wandering below the Earth's surface with only ground water streams and insects to nourish them. This minority group are referred to by tourists as Outback Moles (perhaps in reference to New York's underground population)
The national park's distinctive hard granite boulders and range originally formed out of magma that first slowly solidified under the Earth's crust about 250 million years ago

Tropical Cyclone Nathan update:

Hope Vale remains isolated after flooding has cut access to the town via Laura and Cooktown.

Local police are reminding motorists not to risk entering flood waters as they will not only put their lives and those of passengers at risk, but also those of emergency services and members of the public called upon to effect rescues.

Bigi-bigi (Guugu Yimithirr Subtitles)

During the school holidays of September 2017 Guugu Yimithirr language teacher Lillian Bowen from Hope Vale School in far north Queensland brought a group of students to Canberra to record the vocals for some original Guugu Yimithirr songs created by Lillian and her classes with the Songs on Country Ancestral Language Song Writing Project. This is one of the songs the students recorded.

The purpose of the these songs and video clips is to provide high quality teaching and language transmission resources made by speakers and students for this and future generations of Guugu Yimithirr learners.

Grace Rosendale - Yanggarr (green ants)

“My design is green ants. Yanggarr in my language. This is one of the best medicines for colds and flus.

To make the medicine – we get the ants, put them in a bowl, and make sure none of the ants crawl away. Before Christmas is the best time to get it, because that’s when they lay the eggs. But you can get it at any time of the year. You just squash all the ants together, and rub it all over yourself: on your chest, under your nose. It’s just like Vicks. It’s got that very acidy smell.

When we were growing up in mission days we used to go out with a bowl, get the ants, cut up onion, make some damper – eat it that way. We didn’t have much to eat those mission days.

Muni Day 2008

Muni Day is a day celebrated by the Hope Vale community in memory of the Lutheran Misssionary - Pastor Schwartz. In 2008, members of the community joined the sailing vessel Pelican for a sail after the ceremony.

Created as part of the Hope Vale Digital Story Telling project, in conjunction with the Pelican Project.

Camping Cooktown Endeavour River Valley

Roadtrip taken over a few days away camping with family and friends at the Endeavour Falls Tourist Park in Cooktown Far North Queensland. Was a great time away indeed!!

To The Tip of Australia

Cape York Australia, a large tract of largely unpopulated land, is in the far north of Queensland. It includes ‘The Tip’, an iconic landmark which is Australia’s most northerly point. This is our story:

We experienced Cape York's unique wildlife and flora close up
Walked through abandoned gold mines
Saw the shattered dreams of early explorers.
Stayed at historic places
Witnessed the hidden history of it's importance in WWII.
Camped at a remote beach overlooking the Arafura Sea.
Used ferries to see the Torres Strait and visit Thursday and Horn islands.
Stood at the Tip of Australia
We travelled overland in an Oz Tours Safaris 4X4 truck.
Then flew back to Cairns from a remote airstrip.

This is our photographic journey over 10 days with an emphasis on nature. It starts at the Daintree River.....

Cooktown and Coloured Sands

Part 2 of our long weekend! After leaving Cape Kimberley, we arrived at Lions Den campgrounds pretty late so we set up camp, cooked a sausage each with a slice of white bread and went straight to bed. We packed up first thing in the morning, headed straight for Cooktown where we cooked up some bacon and lettuce sandwiches for breakfast. Fancy, I know. We hung around for a bit so Shayne could do some fishing then headed to Isabel Falls, which was pretty much water running over a causeway which was eroded out underneath. It was awesome nonetheless! From there, we continued up to Hope Vale then to Elim Beach where we camped and met Eddie, the owner of the land. We were able to camp right on the beach front with a perfect view of Coloured Sands. We drove the length of beach at Coloured Sands and were tempted to give sand duning a go but it was midday and the sand was ridiculously hot. Coloured Sands was stunning and is definitely a place everyone should have on their bucket lists!
