L'Austral Iceland Cruise Day 6: A Tour of Isafjordur
A bus tour of Isafjordur, isolated from the rest of Iceland, but with some of the oldest houses in Iceland dating from the 18th century and music heritage. Isafjordur stands on a gravel spit in the fjord and all roads out of town go through tunnels.
Parts of the tour which directly followed Vigur was interesting, e.g., a Maritime museum had an Accordian collection upstairs and a young woman sang a very depressing song downstairs (listen to her story in the video), and the Osvor Museum (in the next video. The cruise was almost over...

L'Austral Iceland Cruise Day 6: Osvor 19th Century Fishing Huts
Osvor is close to the small town of Bolungarvik, the northernmost village in the Westfjords and a fishing village. Close by is the Osvor Museum, a replica of an old fishing outpost.
The museum curator greets visitors wearing a skin suit similar to the one Icelandic sailors wore in the 19th Century and describes a little about the clothing. Osvor is the largest and the oldest fishing base in Ísafjardardjupt. Visitors can walk through an old salt hut and drying hut partially built in the turf for protection.
A short stop but interesting stop. Particularly, gloves with two thumbs!

Vikin - Sjominjasafnid
Reykjavik, walking along the waterfront. Two completely different evenings on the North embankment. One cloudy, the second with a gorgeous sunset. Viking boat-Sun Voyager-business card Reykjavik-gathered a bunch of people to shoot the sunset. Bloody the sky and the Gulf, super illuminating Sun Voyager - awesome beautiful spectacle. The sun sets at 12 o'clock at night, but it is light outside. On the first evening they took pictures of the port, ships, lighthouses, even a duck swam by. It was overcast, clouds-clouds, sunset is not visible. But was lucky in the other evening, simply words there is no, what was a steep twilight of.

Siglufjordur 2012 - Welcome by The Herring House!
Siglufjörður offers a variety of interesting and enjoyable things to do and see -- both for the tourist and for those in search of some outdoor activity.
The winter turns the town into a paradise for the skier and is a dream come true for the outdoor enthusiast. Here they have a choice of trying some cross-country skiing, slalom, skating, or zipping across the snow on a snowmobile.
During the summer, it is the mountains, the lake and the black sandy shores which call to us, and there is a wide selection of walks and hikes in both mountain and valley to tempt the visitor. A few hours walking through the area's rugged landscape gives one the chance to savour the peace and tranquillity which emanates from these natural elements.
The recreational possibilities are almost endless; it is possible to go sea angling or angling in the waters of Hólsá river -- and we must not forget that it can also be fun just fishing from the end of the pier. Midnight sails and trips across the Arctic Circle can be arranged as well. It is possible to organise special activities for those who so wish, such as combining a walking and a sailing trip by e.g. walking out along Héðinsfjörður fiord then returning home by sea. For golf enthusiasts there is a 9 hole golf course at Siglufjörður, and for swimmers, a good swimming pool.
The Síldarminjasafnið herring museum is the largest marine and industrial museum in Europe. It is housed in three widely differing premises where the visitor can become acquainted with the pursuit of the silver darlings and the processing of that valuable commodity. Síldarminjasafnið received the European Museums Award, the Michletti Award, in 2004. The Folk Music Center is also to be found in Siglufjörður.

SUMMARY
=======
Fridtjof Nansen (Norwegian: [²fɾɪtːjɔf ˈnɑnsn̩]; 10 October 1861 – 13 May 1930) was a Norwegian explorer, scientist, diplomat, humanitarian and Nobel Peace Prize laureate. In his youth he was a champion skier and ice skater. He led the team that made the first crossing of the Greenland interior in 1888, traversing the island on cross-country skis. He won international fame after reaching a record northern latitude of 86°14′ during his Fram expedition of 1893–1896. Although he retired from exploration after his return to Norway, his techniques of polar travel and his innovations in equipment and clothing influenced a generation of subsequent Arctic and Antarctic expeditions.
Nansen studied zoology at the Royal Frederick University in Christiania and later worked as a curator at the University Museum of Bergen where his research on the central nervous system of lower marine creatures earned him a doctorate and helped establish neuron doctrine. Later, famed neuroscientist Santiago Ramón y Cajal would win the 1906 Nobel Prize in Medicine for his research on the same subject, though technical priority for the theory is given to Nansen. After 1896 his main scientific interest switched to oceanography; in the course of his research he made many scientific cruises, mainly in the North Atlantic, and contributed to the development of modern oceanographic equipment. As one of his country's leading citizens, in 1905 Nansen spoke out for the ending of Norway's union with Sweden, and was instrumental in persuading Prince Carl of Denmark to accept the throne of the newly independent Norway. Between 1906 and 1908 he served as the Norwegian representative in London, where he helped negotiate the Integrity Treaty that guaranteed Norway's independent status.
In the final decade of his life, Nansen devoted himself primarily to the League of Nations, following his appointment in 1921 as the League's High Commissioner for Refugees. In 1922 he was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for his work on behalf of the displaced victims of the First World War and related conflicts. Among the initiatives he introduced was the Nansen passport for stateless persons, a certificate that used to be recognised by more than 50 countries. He worked on behalf of refugees until his sudden death in 1930, after which the League established the Nansen International Office for Refugees to ensure that his work continued. This office received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1938. His name is commemorated in numerous geographical features, particularly in the polar regions.
