Located 200 meters east of Dogo Onsen Station, in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture, is Isaniwa Shrine. This Shinto Shrine is dedicated to the god Hachiman, patron to the warriors. Visitors will see artwork displaying warriors and wars here.
The architecture of this shrine is traditional Hachiman architectural style with a tall flight of stairs leading up to the shrine. The shrine consists of two halls which are connected by their roofs, making the two halls into one building. This is typical of the Hachiman style. The vermillion pillars and walls are yet another distinct characteristics of this style.
Hours: 5:00 to 19:00 (6:00 to 18:00 during winter)

Matsuyama is the capital city of Ehime Prefecture on Japan’s Shikoku Island. It’s known for its central Dōgo Onsen Honkan bathhouse, dating from the Meiji Period, with ornate, tiered wooden buildings.
Nearby is Shiki Memorial Museum, dedicated to Masaoka Shiki’s haiku poetry. To the west is the restored, feudal-era Matsuyama Castle, with its hilltop gardens and seasonal cherry blossoms.

Special historic site - Matsuyama Castle. The castle is one of Japan's twelve original castles (castles which have survived the post-feudal era since 1868 intact). It is also one of the most complex and interesting castles in the Japan. It is located on Mount Katsuyama, a steep hill in the city center that provides visitors with a bird's eye view of Matsuyama and the Seto Inland Sea. There are about 200 cherry trees (on the castle grounds) which makes it a lovely cherry blossom spot typically around late March to early April each year, Matsuyama, Japan 2018. An ONSEN and a CASTLE | Matsuyama, Ehime
I spent a day in Matsuyama during my weekend trip to Ehime. There were two things I wanted to see, Dogo Onsen and Matsuyama Castle.
Dogo Onsen is a super famous onsen in Japan. It's said to be the inspiration for the bath house in Spirited Away. The onsen was lovely and I'm so glad we decided to go the third floor private room.
Matsuyama Castle is one of Japan's twelve original castles. It was a really nice castle to walk through. Probably my favourite Japanese style castle I've been to so far.

It’s our day 3. Again woke up early and took shinkansen to Hiroshima. Then took a bus to Hiroshima port to take superjet to Matsuyama. We’ve started our 5 days Setouchi pass we bought at Klook.
Once arrived at Matsuyama, we explore the city withing one day. We even bought one day transportation card to walk around the city.

JAPAN'S OLDEST HOTSPRING TOWN
Ehime is a Japanese prefecture covering the northwest quarter of Shikoku Island and dozens of smaller islands in the Seto Inland Sea. In Matsuyama, the prefectural capital, a cable car and chairlift rise to Matsuyama Castle. Established in the 1600s, the castle is set on a plateau in verdant grounds. Dogo Onsen is one of Japan’s oldest hot springs, with a spa resort centered on its 19th-century public bathhouse.
