Ishigaki Day two - Visit to Taketomi Taketomi Island
Today we checked out of our hotel at the Art Hotel Ishigakijima. We went to the port to board a ferry to Taketomi Island (15 minutes) First we did a glass-bottom boat. Then headded over to the Hoshizuna Beach where there is star-shaped sand. Next we took a bus to ride the ox cart that took us around the small town and last we went to Kihouin Museum. We headed over to the port again and then flew back to Naha back to our hotel.

Ishigaki has a vibrant night life with many restaurants and bars. Together with designer Yasutake Ikeshiro, I enjoyed an Okinawan brewed beer on the rooftop beer garden. This is a good location for hot summer nights with friends.

10. Koya-san
Koya-san or Mount Koya is the most important site in Shingon Buddhism, a sect that has been practiced in Japan since 805 when it was introduced by Kobo Daishi. It remains the headquarters for the sect and the small town that grew up around the temple. The site of Kobo Daishi’s mausoleum, this wooded Mount Koya is also the starting and ending place of the Shikoku 88 Temple Pilgrimage.
9. Ishigaki
Located west of Okinawa, Ishigaki is Japan’s premier beach destination and makes a good base to explore the other islands in the Yaeyama archipelago. Blessed with Japan’s best beaches, it is particularly popular with families since the beaches at Fusaki and Maezato are net-protected. Located 1,250 miles (2,000 kilometers) south of Tokyo, Ishigaki may not have the shrines and temples that other Japanese cities have.
8. Kanazawa
In the mid-nineteenth century Kanazawa was Japan’s 4th largest city, built around a grand castle and the beautiful garden. Today, the capital of Ishikawa Prefecture continues to cultivate the arts and contains an attractive old town. Having escaped bombing during World War II, traditional inner-city areas, such as Nagamachi with its samurai houses and the charming geisha teahouse district of Higashi Chaya, remain intact and are a joy to wander around.

Breakfast at the Pacific Hotel Okinawa, a great one with NATTO. We picked up a new local Okinawa,
English speaking guide who will be with us the next 6 days. The group left the hotel at 9 a.m. and took a new route to the airport. We went underwater in a brand new tunnel which took us direct to the airport, cutting out the morning rush hour traffic. Got on a domestic flight which took us about 50 minutes of flying time to Ishigaki Island which is the main business island for the Yaeyama group of islands. This group of islands is the farthest west in the Okinawan chain of 160 islands. It is very close to Taiwan. The guide said that Ishigaki is famous for the Ishigaki wagyu beef. I think she said Kobe buys those young calves from Ishigaki but varies in the way they raise them, such as feeding beer, massaging, etc. The DNA of Kobe beef and Ishigaki beef is exactly the same!
Was after 12 p.m. so we went into town for lunch. Then on to Kabira Bay which is considered Ishigaki’s most scenic view. They cultivate oysters and black pearl in the bay. At the jewelry shop, they had a display of how they cultivate the black pearl oysters and had products on sale. Check out the black pearl necklace – nice item but at 162,000-yen or $1,350, yikes! Next we went to Yaeyama Museum, which displays historical and cultural items of the Yaeyama Islands. On display were wooden canoes, pottery, traditional clothing and household items as well as items from the various festivals and cultural events held among the islands. In some of the important homes, once you get into the gateway, one encounters a stonewall which forces people to go left or right. Ladies traditionally would go left and men and guests would turn right. Since demons can only go straight, they would be stopped by that wall. kekekekeke The walls are just stacks of Ishigaki limestones using no mortar. In the museum, they had a monkey walk-in enclosure. The area is electric fences which keep the monkeys in and double gates so people can enter/leave the area. Cute little monkeys, so tame, they jump on your backs and if not careful, will climb up ladies clothes and try to look for goodies in their handbags. Monkey snacks are available for sale at 200-yen but watch out as you’ll get swarmed by those cuties!
We had time to kill before dinner so we went to a shopping strip mall for the locals. Only thing, they seemed to have more foreigners than locals. There were quite a few buses which brought foreign visitors from the cruise ships to this mall. They had an Aeon store and a Daiso 100-yen store among other smaller businesses. Shopping at Aeon, you need to bring your own shopping bag. They charge 3-yen if they have to provide a bag for you to carry out your purchases. According to our guide, the cruise ship visitors buy a lot at this mall and thus helps the local economy.
Dinner was at an Izakaya. It was mostly sashimi and sushi but we had one small dish of Ishigaki wagyu beef. Checked into the Hotel Nikko Yaeyama. Phew, what a long day!

Pompeii was an ancient Roman town-city near modern Naples, in the Campania region of Italy, in the territory of the comune of Pompei. Pompeii, along with Herculaneum and many villas in the surrounding area, was mostly destroyed and buried under 4 to 6 m (13 to 20 ft) of volcanic ash and pumice in the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD.
Researchers believe that the town was founded in the seventh or sixth century BC by the Osci or Oscans. It came under the domination of Rome in the 4th century BC, and was conquered and became a Roman colony in 80 BC after it joined an unsuccessful rebellion against the Roman Republic. By the time of its destruction, 160 years later, its population was estimated at 11,000 people, and the city had a complex water system, an amphitheatre, gymnasium, and a port.
The eruption destroyed the city, killing its inhabitants and burying it under tons of ash. Evidence for the destruction originally came from a surviving letter by Pliny the Younger, who saw the eruption from a distance and described the death of his uncle Pliny the Elder, an admiral of the Roman fleet, who tried to rescue citizens. The site was lost for about 1,500 years until its initial rediscovery in 1599 and broader rediscovery almost 150 years later by Spanish engineer Rocque Joaquin de Alcubierre in 1748.[1] The objects that lay beneath the city have been preserved for more than a millennium because of the lack of air and moisture. These artefacts provide an extraordinarily detailed insight into the life of a city during the Pax Romana. During the excavation, plaster was used to fill in the voids in the ash layers that once held human bodies. This allowed archaeologists to see the exact position the person was in when he or she died.
Pompeii has been a tourist destination for over 250 years. Today it has UNESCO World Heritage Site status and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Italy, with approximately 2.5 million visitors every year.[2]

獅子舞 - 登野城の結願祭 @石垣島
2010年10月7日、12年ぶりに行われた沖縄県石垣市とぅぬすく（登野城）の結願祭より。「道スナイ」後に天川御嶽で行われた獅子舞の、奉納の様子です。元気のいい獅子で、ブグピトゥ（獅子使い）も背に飛び乗ったり、最後は5人掛かりで獅子を連れて行きました。新調されたミルク面や奉納芸能など、登野城の方々の熱い心意気が伝わって来る、素晴らしい祭りでした。
結願祭は祈願の総決算的な祭祀で、１年間の願結び、願解きの儀礼。登野城では12年に一度の寅年に挙行。
八重山では奉納舞踊をはじめ、今も多くの伝統民俗芸能が受け継がれています。
撮影は、iPod touchを初めて使用してみたが、小さなボディーながらも画質はHD。でも慣れてないせいか、時々左角に指の陰が入ってしまいました。

We left the hotel at 9 to catch the 9:45 speedy ferry to Iriomote Island – took us around 40 minutes. It is the largest island of the Yaeyama Island group and is the 2nd largest Okinawan island next to Okinawa HON-TO (main island). 80% of the island is covered by dense jungle and mangrove swamps which are either part of the state lands or National Park area and funded and managed by the Japanese government. Upon docking at Ohara Port, We boarded a bus and toured the east side of Iriomote. After about a coupla minutes driving, we encountered a traffic signal. They really don’t need one for this island but a 2nd one was added on the west side. If interested, read the tidbits section below. We visited the wildlife museum, also funded and maintained by the Japanese government. Again see tidbits section if interested in more.
We got to the point where we catch the water buffalo right to Yuba Island. The water buffalos were initially brought over from Taiwan to work the fields but now the farmers used machines. So the water buffalos now work towing tourists across the shallow waters to get to Yuba Island. Rude buggah ours was – in da middle of the ride, she spread her butt and did her #2 in da water! On another cart, one buffalo stopped to make #1. Gave everyone something to laugh about! kekekeke The island is mainly a garden and some tourist shops and a restaurant where we had lunch.
Drove further north on the east side to Hoshi-no-hama beach famous for star sand. Actually, the stars are skeletal remains of tiny sea animals. Really hard to find. I found one on the beach but too tiny to photograph. Better to buy some at the souvenir shops – cost about 100-yen for a small bottle. Drove back down to the pier and boarded a river boat to cruise the mangrove fields along the Nakama river. Didn’t see much wildlife.
Caught the speedy ferry back to Ishigaki where we had dinner and then called it day. Another looooong day!
