The magical mangroves are a habitat for birds, fish, crabs and plants. A sensitive place we should all cherish and take care of. When I slide with the kayak through these trees, deeply rooted into the mud it feels like I`m dreaming. Is this place real? A place to be silent, to only listen to the typical mangrove sounds and your own breath.

Japan has some fantastic beaches and wonderful snorkeling all within one hour of Tokyo. Join Mark & I for some adventure on and under the ocean surface. Today's challenges were getting the car to start, entering and exiting the kayaks several times, and amazingly finding the GoPro that got lost at sea.

Japan southernmost group of islands, Okinawa, has many sights of interests for its visitors. Iriomote Island (西表島) is Okinawa’s second largest island. Being undeveloped, natural lovers will be happy to learn 90% of the island is a jungle with its own mangrove forest.
The Iriomote Yamaneko, a type of wildcat, is found only on Iriomote Island. However, it may be difficult to encounter this nocturnal animal as they are an endangered species with less than 100 yamaneko in existence.
The best way to explore the island is by its rivers. The two longest rivers of the island are the Urachigawa (Uchigawa River) and the Nakamagawa (Nakama River). Boat cruises are available among these two rivers. Other options include a guided Kayak tours along these two rivers as well as some of the smaller rivers.
There are a number of Kayak tours visitors can select from. From waterfalls to visiting one of the smaller islands, kayak tour participants need to paddle to their destination. Safety vests and paddling instructions are provided. Due to weather conditions, tours may be cancelled or destinations altered.
The length and cost of the Kayak tour vary according to the tour agency. Some packages include lunch whereas in other tours, participants need to provide their own refreshments. Please check with the tour agency to confirm the items required for a safe experience.

Mangrove grows wildly around Miyara river in Ishigaki Island. Madoka Tokita, who is the president of Ashtanga yoga, tells us what she loves about doing stand up paddle boarding and SUP yoga in rich nature of Ishigaki Island.

Mangrove forests grow in brackish-water swamps in tropical and subtropical zones. In Okinawa, there are lots of Hirugi (Rhizophoraceae), so they’re often called Hirugi forests. Clusters of mangrove can be found in several areas in Ishigaki Island. In the southern part of Ishigaki Island, a Hirugi forest extends across the river mouth of Miyara River (Ishigaki Island’s largest river), which flows into Miyara Bay. From the river mouth, a deep green forest extends for 1.5 kilometers upstream on both sides of the river. In 1972, the forest was designated as a National Treasure. The unique sight of Yaeyama Hirugi (Rhizophara mucronata ) and Ohirugi (Black mangrove) extending their aerial roots and brace roots like octopus legs can be seen from the top of Miyara Bridge.

Even in the absolute worst conditions, Zanpa is the best bet for shore fishing on Okinawa. Gained a great sashimi dinner from this little trip. There is better fishing elsewhere, but the fish are not safe to eat. Zanpa and Hedo are the two, most productive spots to shore fish from Okinawa. I know a lot of us come to Okinawa thinking we know how to saltwater fish. I did the same, and spent thousands on unnecessary, ineffective, tackle. I found the cheapest, most efficient ways to catch fish for me. Comment me with any questions.
