According to legend, an aristocrat held onto a stone very tightly on deathbed seeking the priest Kobo Daishi. Thus the name Ishiteji (ishi=stone; te=hand; ji=temple) was also born.
Ishiteji temple is a very unique and special temple. From the statue of Kobo Daishi, an important figure in Japanese Buddhism, standing above the temple, to the Niomon Gate, a designated National Treasure, there are many cultural sites within the temple. The temple’s main hall and three-storied pagoda are also designated Important Cultural Properties. In addition, there is an inner temple which is connected to the main grounds by a cave.
Visitors will see the typical Kamakura Period architectural style within the structures in Ishiteji Temple. Temple 51 Ishiteji -
One of the most unique and unusual temples on the pilgrimage is located in Matsuyama city, the largest city in Shikoku. Temple 51, Ishiteji - 石手寺, Stone Hand Temple, has a little of everything going on, on its sprawling settings without any real unifying theme. Regardless of its current eccentricities, the temple plays a very, very important part in the pilgrimage’s history and the legend of Emon Saburo, the first pilgrim. Be sure to touch all of the magical stones and walk up the cave to the oddities located above the temple grounds. This temple specializes in fertility, so if you want to have a baby come here and grab a stone!

Ishite-ji (石手寺?) is a Shingon temple in Matsuyama, Ehime Prefecture, Japan. It is Temple 51 on the Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage. Seven of its structures have been designated National Treasures or Important Cultural Properties. The temple of Annoyō-ji was originally founded by Gyōki, and converted from a Hossō to a Shingon temple by Kūkai. Rebuilt by the ruler of Iyo Province in the eighth century, many of the temple buildings were destroyed by the Chōsokabe in the sixteenth century. The aetiology sees the temple's name changed to Ishite-ji or 'stone-hand temple' after the tightly-clenched hand of the newborn son of the lord of Iyo Province was opened by a priest from the Annoyō-ji to reveal a stone inscribed 'Emon Saburō is reborn'.[1]

Japan Trip: Castle Ruins and City Views at Dogo Park, Matsuyama, Japan 17 Moopon
Close to world famous Dogo Onsen, a natural hot springs bath in Matsuyama City, Ehime Prefecture is easy, breezy Dogo Park. Originally the grounds for the Yuzuki Castle, the residence of Shugo Kono, all that remains today are the moats and barely noticeable castle ruins.
However, with Dogo Park being located on a hill with numerous cherry trees, this park is a popular cherry blossom viewing (hanami) spot in the spring. From the observation deck, visitors have great views of Matsuyama Castle, the city and the Seto Inland Sea. Visitors can also visit the small museum to learn about the city’s history. A replica of a samurai complex has been constructed here as well

Ishite temple, #51 of the 88 temples, is much larger than it looks at first glance. It sprawls throughout the hilly terrain and is connected by a series of tiny tunnels which are full of spiders.
