Masjid Beijing: The Chinese Mosque | My Mosque
What makes Masjid Beijing identifiable as a Muslim mosque is its minaret. It is five stories high with carvings presenting the 25 messengers of God. The top shows God’s attributes, while the dome is shaped like a serban. Inside the mosque, Uzbek and Indian style designs are prominent. Khat calligraphy was carved by artists from Kazakhstan. The mosque can easily house 2,000 worshipers at the same time.
About My Mosque
From the multicultural mosques in Malacca town, to the marvelous domes of Kelantan, My Mosque travels through the states of Malaysia bringing these architectural icons to life. Covering two mosques per episode, host Suzhaire Sumari meets with the key people involved and learns interesting architectural and historical tidbits that make each mosque unique – as well as a few things to do and see around town.

Hohhot, Inner Mongolia (呼和浩特,内蒙古) - Part One
To celebrate Golden Week last month, I took a trip out to Hohhot, the capital of Inner Mongolia. Part Mongolian, part Chinese, Inner Mongolia, or 内蒙古, is a perfect travel destination for anyone fed up with the grind of the big city life in Beijing or Shanghai. Featuring plenty of incredible Buddhist temples, a mosque, hiking opportunities, and interesting markets in the city, Hohhot is also great for its proximity to the desert and the grasslands.
For part one of this video journey, experience the madness of the Beijing train station during Golden Week, visit a few of the temples in Hohhot, and see what the night life has to offer...

DaZhao Tibetan Buddhist Temple in Hohhot 4K
Dazhao Temple is the oldest and largest Tibetan-Buddhist temple in Hohhot which has a great influence in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It is situated in the old urban area of Hohhot and located in Front Dazhao Street, Yuquan District, Hohhot City. Due to the impressive buildings, splendid statues, delicate frescos, musical instruments and fine collection of Buddhist scriptures, Dazhao Temple has become a well-known tourist attraction home and abroad.
During the period of Emperor Longqing in Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), Aletanhan, a lead of Tumote Mongolia, was conferred as the Shunyi Emperor of the Mongolian. Owing to the special honor, he decided to enlarge Guihua City (归化城), the old city of Hohhot and Hongci Temple. In 1580, the eighth Year of Wanli Period (1573-1620), the temple was completely enlarged, which had become the earliest Buddhist temple in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region. It went through a large-scale reconstruction in 1640, but much of the original architectural style was retained. Dazhao Temple owns its fame due to the third Tibetan Dalai Lama. In 1586, the third Tibetan Dalai Lama visited Dazhao Temple and took charge of the opening ceremony. As a result, Hongci Temple had become a religious activity center for people in Mongolia.

Travels Through Inner Mongolia
The very name 'Mongolia' has an especially magical ring to it for me - as do a very small number of places, such as Timbuktu, Tibet and Madagascar.
So when I was living for a year in China, Inner Mongolia (the Chinese part of the vast steppes region) was a must-visit destination.
We set out on our journey from a beautifully old-fashioned and almost miniature railway station in northern Beijing - a building that reminded of something from Noddy's 'Toyland'. Sentimentalist and souvenirist that I am, I keep the train ticket in my wallet to this day.
Our seats were already occupied by solid capitalist-disapproving citizens who were not to be moved. I happily spent the night on some sheets of newspaper under a row of seats.
The first stop on the way to the grasslands was the city of Hohhot -- in Mongolian 'the blue city', symbolizing, in the culture, the sky, eternity and purity.
The metropolis used to have -- maybe still does have -- lots of rather severe and forbidding Soviet style buildings and monuments, echoes of a time when the two great socialist superpowers were closer friends. So not a place of the greatest charm I would have to say.
On the second day in the city, there was a mildly unfortunate episode. I was keen to photograph a woman in traditional clothing -- perhaps visiting town from an out-lying area -- but all my efforts at going about this unnoticed were sabotaged by my Chinese friends who wanted me to have a good image. The woman was stood up in front of me to be shot, and she looked exactly as though this was what she was expecting to happen. I've included in the video but it needed some explanation as I usually try not to be the ugly tourist.
After visiting a Tibetan-style temple outside Hohhot, we journeyed to a tiny hamlet on our way to the grasslands -- only a dirt road with handful of houses one deep on each side. As we wandered down the street people were almost hypnotically drawn out of their homes by the sight of a foreign devil -- then lots of laughter and pulling he hair on his arms.
Then onto the steppes -- sprawling to the horizon in every direction in just two colours - the yellow-green of the grass and the blue of the sky.
We settled into somewhat tourist-inspired yerts and passed our days in long wanderings across the grasslands, with the occasional visit to the local 'Shop', signed in Mongolian, Chinese and English!
The dream come true!
Enjoy!
Hohhot Airport Gift Shop
It is sad to see that the traditions have been lost and the way of life is not so much like western style.
The traditional cloths are no longer seen worn by the people of the land.
The entire world looks so much like everyone else.
We have now become a reflective culture of our western traditions.
No real true way of culture exist anywhere in the world.
What is good are we able to know the history human civilisation looking at shirts jackets and shoes styles in the same way?
I have tried to wear the Mongolian head wear and the gifts are just made for commercial reasons yet is has no character or value.

Voters in Turkey are about to go to the polls to decide on a radical change in the structure of the country’s government. Niujie Mosque Beijing (Pt 2) 6-4-2016
NIUJIE MOSQUE
Niuji Mosque (actual name Libaisi Masjid) is the oldest mosque in Beijing built in 996 AD during the reign of Liao Dynasty. It was destroyed by Mongols under Genghis Khan in 1215 during their onslaught of civilized world and conquest of Beijing. It was reconstructed in 1442 during Ming Dynasty and expanded in 1696 during Qing Dynasty. Now it has an area of 10000 sqm (2.5 acre) and reflects a mix culture of Islamic and Han Chinese architectural style. It is located on Niujie Street (Cow Street) of Beijing’s Xuanwu District which is a largely Muslim inhabited area with big Muslim super stores, restaurants and shops. Lanzhou Lamiian (noodles bowl) is the special food available here at very reasonable price. The Mosque is within walking distance from Caishikou Station of Beijing Subway (Metro) system.
