Cook Islands Vaka Eiva Trade Days (BTIB)
Cook Islands Vaka Eiva is an annual event where paddlers from all over the world compete in outrigger canoe races. Vaka Eiva runs for a week during November at the Avarua waterfront - Trader Jacks. This event provides an opportunity to showcase Cook Islands Products to visitors, paddlers and consumers. Like Cook Islands Trade Days, Vaka Eiva Trade Days is a trade exhibition of Cook Islands authentic products where island food, crafts and cultural entertainment is experienced by many. Visitors and Paddlers experience real island products from Rarotonga and outer islands.

1. The Cook Islands is a self-governing island country in the South Pacific Ocean in free association with New Zealand. The Cook Islands' defence and foreign affairs are the responsibility of New Zealand, but they are exercised in consultation with the Cook Islands. Although Cook Islanders are citizens of New Zealand, they have the status of Cook Islands nationals, which is not given to other New Zealand citizens.
2. The Cook Islands are the world’s second largest producer of black pearls.
3. The chief town, Avarua is located on the north coast of Rarotonga, and it is the capital of the Cook Islands.
4. The Cook Islands were named by the Russians in the early 1800’s in honor of the Captain James Cook. On his third world voyage, Cook landed on several islands in the Southern Cook Island Group. In the early 1800s the name Cook Islands showed up on a Russian naval chart and it stuck.
5. Think 'Cook Islands' and you think 'beaches,' but one of the best kept secrets in the Cook Islands is the beautiful island of Aitutaki. The turquoise lagoon, white sands and thick palm forests make for an incredible backdrop for your trip.
6. The Cook Islands became a British protectorate in 1888, due largely to community fears that France might occupy the territory as it had Tahiti. On 6 September 1900, the leading islanders presented a petition asking that the islands (including Niue if possible) should be annexed as British territory.
7. The Cook Islands were first settled in the 6th century by Polynesian people who migrated from Tahiti, an island 1,154 kilometres to the northeast. The journeys undertaken by these stone age people in their fragile craft dwarf the voyages of exploration boasted of by the Portuguese, Spanish, British, Dutch, and French. Over-population on many of the tiny islands of Polynesia led to these oceanic migrations.

Mama Tupou is the iconic N.Z Dusky Maiden , immortalised on black velvet by the late, Charlie Mcphee .Hailed as a Goddess she is without a doubt ,one of the most Beautiful Polynesian women ever painted in History.

GETTING TO THE NEEDLE…
The Needle is the large rock / focus of my video.
It is the one of highest points on Rarotonga island, and an amazing hike. It gets extremely steep near the top.
We literally had to pull ourselves up using tree roots along the way. (I expected to run into Frodo and Bilbo Baggins at some point, but no luck.)
To help you understand the scale, at 10 seconds in, look for the red dot at the bottom right of the rock. That is a guy from France we met upon reaching the summit.
A lot of people have also asked me if the birds in the video are computer generated. They are not. However, I did have a production meeting with them prior to flying and told them to give me some nice big swoops through the frame while I was filming. Kidding.
