MIDWAY ATOLL (Reuters) - President Barack Obama snorkeled on Thursday in the electric-blue water off Midway Atoll, a remote coral reef that serves as a reminder of both modern global climate challenges and the United State's dominance in the Pacific since its World War Two victory there.
The journey was aimed at sending a message about the need to protect vulnerable species and spaces from the ravages of climate change.
But it was also timed as Obama makes his way to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping and other world leaders in his last visit to Asia, having sought to refocus U.S. defense and trade policy on the region.
It's a signal, it's a message saying the United States is committed to staying in the Pacific, and not sort of backing away, said naval historian Tom Hone, who has studied the Battle of Midway.
Zipping around the island in an 18-golf-cart motorcade filled with Secret Service, aides and camera crews, Obama stopped to see several endangered green sea turtles lazily paddle in to bask on the white sand beach.
When I grew up, we'd see these turtles all the time. You almost never see them beaching like this, just basking in the sun, said Obama, who grew up in Hawaii, more than 1,100 nautical miles to the southeast.
Obama, whose presidency comes to an end in five months, has tried to use his time in office to make Americans more passionate about climate change.
Less than 5 percent of American voters say the environment is the most important issue facing the country, according to Reuters/Ipsos polling between July 24 and Aug. 21, and 35 percent say climate change will not affect the way they vote in the Nov. 8 election to pick Obama's successor.
The island visit bookends Obama's trip last year to Alaska, where he hiked on a shrinking glacier.
These aren't 'photo ops' - I think these are real opportunities to help the American people understand, said Carol Browner, a former head of the Environmental Protection Agency who advised Obama on climate issues in his first term.
He can get a level of attention that nobody else can get, Browner said.
Last week, Obama quadrupled the size of Papahānaumokuākea Marine National Monument to create the world's largest marine monument, protecting the area off the coast of Hawaii from commercial fishing and drilling.
This is going to be a precious resource for generations to come, said Obama, his dress shirt undone an extra button in the sauna-like heat.
This is hallowed ground, he said near a beach where young soldiers hunkered down under pillboxes, awaiting Japanese fighter planes during the World War Two Battle of Midway, one of the most-studied battles in military history.
Had it not been for the courage and the bravery of those airmen, we might have not seen the tide turn in the battle of the Pacific, he said.
In June 1942, U.S. forces, tipped by code-breakers that the Japanese navy was planning an attack, sank four Japanese aircraft carriers and a heavy cruiser in a giant air and sea battle.
Obama's golf cart motorcade bumped over a tarmac pock-marked by shrapnel from the battle, passing old hangars and a bone yard of scrap metal, old office chairs, and broken appliances.
Massive bags held some of the 20 tons of plastic ocean garbage that land on the island each year, 5 tons of which come from the bellies of albatrosses, which feed the plastic to their young, often fatally.
Curious tern fledglings checked out his entourage, which tripled the island's average population of about 35 humans.
Watch the burrow! called Miel Corbett, a Fish and Wildlife Services spokeswoman, as a visitor narrowly avoided stomping the underground home of the bonin petrel. About a million of the birds swoop out of their nests each night at dusk.
Vestiges of the island's former life as a large naval base remain, although many have fallen into decay. Visitors have not been allowed since 2012 because of tight budgets. Reporters wrote their stories in a still-working 1970s bowling alley, just down the way from barber shop.

IRELAND: PRESIDENT CLINTON GIVES SPEECH IN IRISH PARLIAMENT
English/Nat
President Clinton spoke today at the Irish Parliament, the Dail (pronounced Doil) after making a public speech to the crowds in Dublin's city centre.
Following his visit to London and a landmark visit to Northern Ireland Thursday, the President's speech to the Irish Parliament was another chance for the President to offer encouragement to the Irish peace process.
On the last stop of his tour of the British Isles to help push along the peace process in Northern Ireland, US President Bill Clinton addressed Ireland's Dublin parliament, the Dail.
The President was given a tour of the classical building and shown pictures of Presidents Reagan and Kennedy during their visits to the Dail.
He was warmly welcomed to the Irish parliament in both Irish and English.
The speaker of the Irish House of Representatives stressed the importance of not letting the peace process falter, with a quote from an earlier Irish-American President .
SOUNDBITE: English:
A reminder of the words of President Kennedy: Mankind must put an end to war or war will put an end to mankind.
SUPER CAPTION: Speaker of Dail (Clinton mouths along)
Clinton offered words of encouragement to the Dail to not give up the faith.
SOUNDBITE: English:
We seek to somehow to communicate to every single person who lives here that we want for all of your children the right to grow up in an Ireland where this entire island gives every man and woman the right to live up to the fullest of their God-given abilities.
SUPER CAPTION: President Bill Clinton
And the President assured the Irish parliament that they must continue the pursuit of peace.
SOUNDBITE: English:
That is the tide of history. We must make sure that the tide runs strong here. For no people deserve the brightest future more than the Irish. God bless you and thank you.
SUPER CAPTION: President Bill Clinton
The American President is scheduled to visit Germany and Spain before returning to Washington.

USA: WHITE HOUSE: IRISH PM JOHN BRUTON CELEBRATES ST PATRICK'S DAY
English/Nat
Irish Prime Minister John Bruton renewed his call for an Irish Republican Army ceasefire as he took part in a St Patrick's Day ceremony at the White House on Monday.
Bruton delivered his country's traditional gift of shamrocks to the people of the United States.
He met Vice-President Al Gore -- standing in for President Bill Clinton -- as the future of peace talks over Northern Ireland continued to dominate their talks.
Wearing a bright green tie in honour of St. Patrick's Day, Al Gore accepted the traditional gift of a crystal bowl brimming with shamrocks.
Vice President Gore was standing in for U-S President Bill Clinton who is recovering from knee surgery.
Irish Prime Minister John Bruton repeated his call for United State's aid in pushing along the peace process in Northern Ireland.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
I'm visiting the United States this week, Mr. Vice President, to seek your help and that of the president, and of all Americans, for the reconstitution of a really honest peace process in Ireland, a peace process and a ceasefire that has no place for the continued
targeting of victims, for continued knee-cappings or for veiled threats. This time the Irish people want a real ceasefire, one that will last, one that will last because it springs from a full acceptance of the logic of peace.
SUPER CAPTION: John Bruton, Irish Prime Minister
The U-S Vice President said he was confident that Sinn Fein - the political wing of the I- R-A - would be invited to join reconvened peace talks once an I-R-A ceasefire had been called.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
The IRA must declare a ceasefire and I want to express and do again express the conviction that following a ceasefire by the IRA - Sinn Fein would be invited to participate in the talks. I think that everyone understands that that would be the case and I express the hope again that that will occur.
SUPER CAPTION: Al Gore, U-S Vice President
After the ceremony in the White House, the Irish Prime Minister spoke to reporters about the impact of the newly announced elections in the United Kingdom.
He wanted to make sure that peace negotiations remained a major issue during the election.
SOUNDBITE: (English)
On the other hand, we would be seeking to influence the debate that's taking place, and this election will be a very important debate for the British people. We will be seeking to influence that debate in such a way that everybody in Britain realises that complete peace and true reconciliation in the island of Ireland is possible, can happen in this generation and, indeed, if we have the will, will happen in this generation.
SUPER CAPTION: John Bruton, Irish Prime Minister
Sinn Fein was excluded from the peace talks after the I-R-A broke its ceasefire a year ago with a bomb in the London Docklands business area.
A fresh round of peace talks, chaired by former U-S Senator George Mitchell, will reconvene in June.
The key question then will be whether the I-R-A can deliver another ceasefire.

DAVID CAY JOHNSTON: LIVING IN TRUMP'S AMERICA
While Twitter feuds and Russian hackers dominate news headlines, President Donald Trump’s administration is radically changing the policies and programs that define the American way of life. Beyond the tweets, firings, scandals and indictments, how will Trump’s policy agenda continue to affect our daily lives?
Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist David Cay Johnston says he has the answers. Since 1988, Johnston has been chronicling Trump’s personal life and business dealings—from his casinos to his marriages and beyond. In his new book, It’s Even Worse Than You Think, Johnston is going where the media won’t—into the weeds—to shed new light on the Trump administration’s policies and bureaucratic choices and how they will change America. Join Johnston for a revealing conversation about the Trump administration’s impact on our finances, health care, safety and much, much more.

Places to see in ( New York - USA ) Battery Park
Places to see in ( New York - USA ) Battery Park
The Battery (also commonly known as Battery Park) is a 25-acre (10 ha) public park located at the southern tip of Manhattan Island in New York City facing New York Harbor. The park and surrounding area is named for the artillery batteries that were positioned there in the city's early years to protect the settlement behind them.
The Battery Conservancy, founded in 1994 by current President Warrie Price, has undertaken and funded the restoration and improvement of the once-dilapidated park. The park was known as Battery Park until 2015, when the New York City Department of Parks and Recreation restored the park's original, historical title of The Battery.
The southern shoreline of Manhattan Island had been known as The Battery since the 17th century when the area was part of the Dutch Settlement of New Amsterdam. At the time, an artillery battery there served to protect the seaward approaches to the town. The Battery continued its function during the colonial era, and was the center of Evacuation Day celebrations commemorating the departure of the last British troops in the United States after the American Revolutionary War. Just prior to the War of 1812, the West Battery, later renamed Castle Clinton, was erected on a small artificial offshore island nearby, to replace the earlier batteries in the area; later, when the Battery's landmass was created, it encircled and incorporated the island.
Toward the northwestern end of the park is Castle Clinton, the often-repurposed last remnant of the defensive works which inspired the name of the park; the former fireboat station Pier A; and Hope Garden, a memorial to AIDS victims. The Battery Gardens restaurant, next to the United States Coast Guard Battery Building. Along the waterfront, Statue Cruises offers ferries to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island. The park is also the site of the East Coast Memorial which commemorates U.S. servicemen who died in coastal waters of the western Atlantic Ocean during World War II, and several other memorials. The SeaGlass Carousel, a site-specific attraction that opened on August 20, 2015, is designed to resemble an under-the-sea garden through which visitors ride on fish shimmering as though they were bioluminescent, and pays homage not only to the carousel's waterfront site, but also to Castle Clinton, which housed the New York Aquarium in the early 20th century.
To the northwest of the park lies Battery Park City, a planned community built on landfill in the 1970s and '80s, which includes Robert F. Wagner Park and the Battery Park City Promenade. Battery Park City was named after the park. Together with Hudson River Park, a system of greenspaces, bikeways, and promenades now extend up the Hudson River shoreline. A bikeway might be built through the park that will connect the Hudson River Park and East River Greenway parts of the Manhattan Waterfront Greenway.
Across State Street to the northeast is Bowling Green, as well as the old U.S. Customs House, now used as a branch of the National Museum of the American Indian and the district U.S. Bankruptcy Court. Peter Minuit Plaza abuts the southeast end of the park, directly in front of the Staten Island Ferry's Whitehall Terminal at South Ferry.

Change of Course: Wedding Venue Moved for Obama's Golf Game
A military couple, undoubtedly accustomed to making sacrifices for their country, had to change their wedding venue at the request of the White House. Natalie Heimel and her now husband, Edward Mallue Jr., both Army captains, had planned to hold their wedding ceremony on the 16th green of the Marine Base Hawaii golf course Saturday. But there was only one problem — President Barack Obama, who is vacationing on the island, planned to golf the course at the same time.
Obama gets jump on Martha's Vineyard vacation
CHILMARK, Mass. (AP) -- President Barack Obama's summer vacation has begun. Obama arrived on the Massachusetts island of Martha's Vineyard on Friday, a day earlier than originally scheduled, for a 17-day break before he plunges into a busy September and fresh battles with the Republican-controlled Congress over Iran, spending and other issues. Obama, Michelle Obama, daughter Sasha and dogs Bo and Sunny flew aboard Air Force One to the Coast Guard station on Cape Cod, before boarding helicopters for the short hop to Martha's Vineyard, the summer hangout for the wealthy just to the south. The president arrived at his vacation home in Chilmark, the same seven-bedroom, nine-bathroom property he rented last year, after a 20-minute drive over the picturesque island's gently rolling hills and verdant green spaces. White House press secretary Josh Earnest said Obama realized he could spend Friday night on the island after all and get started on his vacation first thing (Saturday) morning so he decided to go for it. Obama sounded jovial earlier Friday as he wrapped up his duties at the White House and looked ahead to the getaway. I know you'll miss me, he joked to reporters who watched him sign a bill to preserve wilderness land in Idaho. The president tries to lay low during vacation, and aides said he was not expected to make any news during his stay. The vacation is Obama's sixth on the island since he became president. He did not vacation here during his 2012 re-election campaign. With no official appearances scheduled, Obama will fill his days with leisurely rounds of golf, beach outings, bike rides and hikes with his wife and daughers, and dinner with Mrs. Obama and their friends at some of the island's top restaurants. He traveled with a small group of aides, including national security adviser Susan Rice, senior adviser Valerie Jarrett and others, who will update him as developments warrant. There is a chance that Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton, who is seeking the Democratic presidential nomination to succeed Obama, will see each other on the island. They are expected to attend a birthday party for Ann Jordan, the wife of Democratic adviser Vernon Jordan. Obama and his aides are hoping for a more relaxed summer getaway. Last year's vacation began as the U.S. started launching airstrikes against Islamic militant targets in Iraq. He interrupted the vacation several times to address political developments in Iraq, the beheading of American journalist James Foley by Islamic State militants and violent protests that erupted in Ferguson, Missouri, following the fatal shooting of an unarmed, 18-year-old black man by a white police officer. Obama later was criticized for heading to the golf course immediately after condemning Foley's killing. He also returned to the White House in the middle of last year's vacation to attend meetings. There are no plans for a similar trip before Obama's vacation ends on Aug. 23. September will bring congressional votes on the Iran nuclear deal that most Republicans and some Democrats oppose, along with negotiations over the federal budget and a pair of White House visits by Pope Francis and Chinese President Xi Jinping. 2015 The Associated Press.
