Why Flying to Hawaii Will Cost More
The abrupt shutdowns of ATA Airlines and Aloha Airlines won't keep travelers off Hawaii's shores altogether, but they could make an already expensive vacation destination even pricier and potentially put the leis and luaus out of reach for many.
Flights to and from Hawaii had been a key part of ATA's business ever since the Indianapolis-based carrier scaled back its route network following a previous trip through bankruptcy in 2006.
On Thursday, the airline suddenly quit flying, leaving passengers on the islands and elsewhere stranded as it again headed for bankruptcy court. Virtually all the carrier's more than 2,200 employees were laid off.
It'll hurt, said Minneapolis-based airline expert Terry Trippler. They did a lot of business to and from Hawaii at fairly reasonable prices.
Have You Been Here?
Aiea Anahola Haena Haiku Haleiwa Hilo Honaunau Honokowai Honomu Kaanapali Kahana Kahuku Kahului Kailua Kona Paia Poipu Beach Punaluu Waianae Wailuku Waimanalo?
The surprise announcement came just two weeks after Aloha filed for bankruptcy protection following years of losses. The airline, which served the state for more than 60 years and was the islands' second-largest carrier, ended passenger service Monday and is hoping to offload its cargo business this month. It flew both inter-island routes and flights to the mainland.
The one-two punch, coming at a time when the airline industry is already straining under rapidly rising fuel prices, will likely prompt remaining carriers to push their fares even higher, industry observers said.
They've really been thrown a curve ball. Nobody really expected two major competitors to go away, said Robert Mann, an independent airline analyst in Port Washington, N.Y. When you pull out a major carrier, it's going to create a lot of demand on the remaining carriers.
Hawaiian Airlines, the state's biggest airline, could emerge as the biggest winner following its rivals' collapse. The carrier flies to nine cities on the mainland -- more than any other airline -- including all four markets where ATA operated. It also controls a hefty share of inter-island traffic.
Cheap Travel Tips
10 Cheap Destinations Cheap Luxury Hotels Tips For Best Hotel Rate Travel On A Weak Dollar A number of other domestic carriers also fly to the islands, and each will likely see additional traffic flowing their way now that two rivals are out of the picture.
Delta Air Lines and Continental Airlines competed against ATA on direct flights from Los Angeles, for example, while US Airways challenged the carrier in Phoenix. Northwest Airlines, United Airlines, American Airlines and Alaska Airlines all also fly from multiple mainland destinations.
It helps all the carriers who fly from the U.S. mainland to Hawaii, Avondale Partners airline analyst Bob McAdoo said. There'll be less seats offered at really deep discounts.
Have You Traveled Lately?
How Was Your Flight? Was Your Luggage Lost? Any Problems With Security? How Was the Hotel? Or Did You Take a Cruise? Flights between the islands could also grow more expensive.
Hawaiian and Mesa Air Group, the parent company of inter-island carrier go!, have each recently announced plans to add spare planes and flights on routes within Hawaii to help make up for the loss of Aloha service.
Even so, experts doubt fares that have fallen as low as $49 or less one-way are sustainable over the long term.
It's an unrealistically low price, Mann said.

Maui vacation August 2015
We left Boston and Phoenix for the cool sands of Maui, Hawaii. We stayed at the Westin Hotel on Ka'anapali Beach. We spent the first day poolside as we adjusted to the new time zone. One of our first activities was snorkeling and cliff diving at Black Rock. The snorkeling was quite good - we saw our first sea turtle. We spent a half day deep sea fishing, where we reeled in several tuna. Once the kids got the hang of snorkeling, we went to mile marker 14.0 with naturalists from The Ocean Project. Despite the poor visibility from the rain the day before, we saw several more sea turtles, along with other reef fish. Our catamaran trip aboard the Trilogy V to Molokini crater was a highlight. With more than 100 foot visibility, we saw moray eels and a variety of reef fish, including the famous state fish Humuhumunukunukuapuaa. We spare time in the afternoons, we battled the waves on Ka'anapali Beach, relaxed on Kapalua Bay, and went parasailing in front of our hotel. On the last day, we drove from Lahaina to Paia and spent a few hours on the Road to Hana. Throughout, we enjoyed great food from Star Noodle, Leoda's, Merriman's and my favorite - the Paia Fish Market. All footage was shot with a GoPro Hero 4 Silver.

Hawaii Trip
In November of 2015, I visited the 50th state to join the U.S.: Hawai’i. When I first planned to go a year before, my mom told me, “You’re taking me with you,” and later my sister was on the trip making it a 3-person adventure. I had never been to Hawai’i, my mom had last been to Hawai’i about 43 years ago so she was certainly itching to return, and my sister had only been at the Honolulu airport.
This video is the trip from my perspective as there were a couple of activities that I partook in that my mom and sister did not.
The trip itinerary went as follows:
Day 1 - fly from home (DC area for my mom and me, Tampa area for my sister) to Honolulu on Oahu (we had a connection in Salt Lake City) and check out some of Waikiki
Day 2 - visit the Foster Botanical Garden and later go hiking at Diamond Head
Day 3 - bus tour of Pearl Harbor, Punchbowl Crater, and downtown Honolulu before seeing Rainbow Tower where my mom had stayed the last time she was in Hawai’i
Day 4 - swimming at Waikiki Beach, road trip around the island of Oahu where we stopped at Hanauma Bay, many lookouts, and watched the sunset at Sunset Point (we made it about a minute before the sun started dipping below the horizon) before checking out Waimea Beach and heading back to Honolulu
Day 5 - flying to Hilo, checking in at the hotel, and exploring Moku o Lo’e (Coconut Island)
Day 6 - I went hiking through Hilo starting at the Boiling Pots along the Wailuku River, checking out Rainbow Falls, going into downtown Hilo, and seeing the Japanese gardens
Day 7 - I went on a doors-off helicopter tour of the lava flows, waterfalls, and downtown Hilo before walking to meet up with my mom and sister for dinner
Day 8 - road trip where we checked out Rainbow Falls (this time it was sunny, so there was an actual rainbow), the Mauna Loa macadamia nut factory, Volcanoes National Park, and eventually made it to Kona in the dark
Day 9 - road trip to see the Mauna Kea observatory visitor center, then to Hilo, then flying to the island of Kaua’i and watching surfers at Nawiliwili Bay
Day 10 - we checked out Waimea Canyon (the “Grand Canyon of the Pacific”), an old Russian 19th century fort, salt ponds, and swam with fish at Poipu Beach
Day 11 - visited the Kauai sugarcane plantation, went on a train ride around the plantation, checked out Wailua Falls, stopped at Wailua Beach, watched some hula dancing near Wailua, and checked out the stars at night over Nawiliwili Bay before heading to the airport to take red-eyes back to the mainland
Day 12 - watching out the window as we lost 5 hours of the day and went from eating breakfast before our 2nd flight to it being past dinnertime when we landed in Dulles
Hawai’i is an amazing place, and I hope you all get to go there and experience it.
All videos were taken by me with my iPhone 4S and Pentax WG-3.
The satellite image of Hawai’i was taken by NASA. All other photos were taken by me, my sister, or my mom with my iPhone 4S and Pentax WG-3.
Music is a collection of Hawai’ian songs new and old:

Day 2 - Ka Ukulele Lele” by Bryan Tolentino
Day 3 - Pupu A'o Niihau” by Genoa Keawe
Day 4 - “Wahineko’Olau” by Kainani Kahaunaele
Day 5 - Kaulana O Hilo Hanakahi” by Herb Ohta, Jr.
Day 6 - Ka Uluwehi O Hilo” by Kuana Torres Kahele

Day 8 - “Hilo Hula” by Uluwehi Guerrero

Absolutely worth every penny. Emery was a great pilot and tour guide. Can't wait for our next visit to do another part of the islands
I am continually impressed with the professionalism of Blue Hawaiian. Your operations set the standard for helicopter tours for safety and precision. Well done.
Erik and the staff were fantastic and the tour was AMAZING!!! Extraordinary way to see the island. I highly recommend it. I wanted to go right back up.

You'll be a star, or at least fly like one. When you choose Blue, you're choosing Hollywood's first-call helicopter tour company for blockbuster aerial photography. In addition to the upcoming mega-releases Battleship and Pirates of the Caribbean IV, our pilots have flown aerial photography for Jurassic Park, Jurassic Park: The Lost World, Tropic Thunder, Pirates of the Caribbean III, Crimson Tide, George of the Jungle, Honeymoon in Vegas, and numerous other major motion pictures, not to mention television shoots for MTV, The Food Channel, National Geographic, the Weather Channel, Wheel of Fortune and more. If these top professionals trust Blue Hawaiian with their multi-million dollar productions, perhaps Hollywood knows something you should know?
Living Aloha, every day. All of us in Hawaii have a responsibility to uphold the islands' proud tradition of hospitality. Years ago, the late cultural pioneer George Kanahele (author of Ku Kanaka: Stand Tall) showed us the incredible potential of using our helicopters as flying classrooms. We took that mission very seriously and since then have invested in Hawaiiana education for all of our employees. Our pilots offer our guests insightful and accurate information about Hawaiian culture, flora and fauna, history, geology and place names. Our guests are able to ask their pilot questions through our proprietary two-way in-flight communication system, which enhances their involvement, and when they share their knowledge with their friends and family upon returning home, the outreach extends. It's an honor to do our part to help preserve Hawaii's precious native culture.
You don't have to take our word for it. Only Blue gives you the confidence of consistent and repeated endorsements and awards from the most important international, national, and local organizations in the travel industry: National Geographic Magazine, Frommer's Hawaii, The Travel Channel; the American Academy of Hospitality Sciences, the Tour Operators Program of Safety, Helicopters Association International, and more. Blue Hawaiian is also the local Hawaii favorite, regularly voted the #1 Air Tour by the local readers of Hawaii Tribune-Herald, West Hawaii Today, North Hawaii News, Kauai People and MidWeek Kauai, and The Maui News.
