Florida Travel: Welcome to Captiva Island
Located near Fort Myers off Florida's Gulf Coast, Captiva Island is often associated with the neighboring island of Sanibel to the south. Both are all about the outdoors – biking, sailing, birding and water activities abound. A sliver of land nestled against the state’s southwest coast, Captiva Island has a slightly off-kilter and almost magical feel. Explore Captiva Island here:

SNACK BAR OF ST. PETERSBURG IN TREASURE ISLAND BEACH FLORIDA JAN. 2011
There is a little oasis in the middle of Treasure Island, Florida which is the property of the City of St. Petersburg. It has a parking lot, a food and drink snack bar with suntan lotions and beach toys plus a shady restr area, a playground, charcoal berbecue pits, restrooms, outside beach shower and indoor hot shpwers plus they now sell beer. Treasure Island Beach is one of the few beaches that allow alcoholic beverages on the beach as long as they are not in glass containers. This St. Petersburg-run beach rest stop also provides free-rental balloon-tire wheelchairs to take disabled persons to the beach. There is a mile-long (almost) walkway here that tourists use for bicycling, walking, running, skating and skateboarding.

In my salty traveler's opinion, the Key West Express is the best way to get to Key West. It's better than being cramped on an airplane and dealing with airports. It's better than driving for 6+ hours and dealing with slow traffic down US 1.
Why not get to Fort Myers, jump aboard the Key West express, order a nice rum drink and watch the Gulf of Mexico go by. In 3.5 hours, you'll be in Key West and ready to explore the island's treasures.
If you have any questions about the Key West Express, let me know. I travel on it a few times a year and know both Ft. Myers beach and Key West well.
Have fun!
Cheers,
Ryan

A Salty Passion: Hi! We are Ryan (RumShopRyan) and Crystal (Castaway Crystal), we document, photograph, and film the best the Caribbean has to offer. Whether it’s stunning beaches, relaxing hotels, friendly restaurants, or soggy beach bars…we want to share it and inspire others to explore the islands.
MEET US!
Who Is RumShopRyan:
Howdy! I’m Ryan and I hail from the land-locked, can’t get any further from the ocean, state of Kansas. I moved to laid back southwest Florida in 2001. I didn’t know a single person and didn’t have a job. Risky I know, but the ocean was calling and I had to answer.
I’m a huge fan of Kansas City sports, so you’ll probably see a lot of Jayhawks, Chiefs and Royals attire in my photos. Kansas City is a great town and I’m glad I’m from there, but the coastal life was calling. It’s kind of like Kenny Chesney’s “island boy” song. Check out the lyrics and you’ll see what I mean.
I write because I’m passionate about the Caribbean and the island lifestyle, and it’s my way to share it with you. If it has anything to do with the Caribbean, rum drinks, beach style music, or Caribbean culture, you’ll be able to find it on this site.
When in the Caribbean you’ll find a camera around my neck and note pad in my pocket. This is how I document the experiences in unique and interesting ways and bring it back to you, the Castaways.
Who is Castaway Crystal:
I was raised in Southwest Florida so it’s no surprise that I have a love for beaches, water and nature. As a child, most weekends were spent fishing in the warm gulf waters on the family boat. As an adult, most weekends are spent soaking up the sun on Ft. Myers Beach. Even though I have always loved the coastal life, I don’t think I fully appreciated it until I moved to Nashville, TN. I’m all about experiencing new things, and as a Licensed Massage Therapist I thought it would be amazing to massage some of Nashville’s biggest stars (a girl can dream right?). But I missed the sun and sand too much—and let’s not forget the rum runners! After a year I couldn’t take it anymore, this sun bunny moved back to her coast of somewhere beautiful.
I’ve always been passionate about photography and writing, but my passions never really had a purpose until I met Ryan. I couldn’t be happier being Ryan’s first mate and sharing my photos and stories with you. May they inspire you to go after your tropical dreams and wishes. Make a plan…Set a date…Just go!

Sights and Sounds of Keewaydin Island, Naples Bay and Port Royal.
Learn more about Naples, Florida by joining our Facebook group page at
Keewaydin Island is a primary barrier island located off the coast of Naples, in Collier County, Florida, United States. Keewaydin Island is monitored nightly for Loggerhead turtle nesting activity by The Conservancy of Southwest Florida.
Keeywadin's Public Beach
The Keewaydin Island shoreline has been mapped annually since 1997 in an effort to document shoreline change. The shoreline is also mapped after significant storm events. Mapping is done by collecting Global Positioning System locations along the dune-line and then downloaded using Geographic information system software.
Keewaydin Island was once a part of the Keewaydin Camps Ltd. corporation. Originally, the island was named Key Island, and once the Keewaydin Camps had a presence here, it became known as Keewaydin Island. The island is currently about 85% public property and 15% private. Approximately 50 private lots and 15 private homes dot the island, mostly on the south side of the island.
Keewaydin Island is a unique barrier island in Florida that has no cars, roads, or bridges. It had a history of being the next developable barrier island, after Marco Island to the south was developed in the 50's and 60's and onward. During the late 50's and early 60's when the government was planning a road and bridge out to the island, 1,000 local residents signed a petition to stop the road and any future commercial development. They wanted to avoid the pattern on barrier islands at the time, such as Fort Myers Beach, where local residents were 85% against dense development, but zoning laws and large property owners held sway. In fact, high density high rise structures line the shores on most barrier islands in Florida, except notable places like Keewaydin, where the environmentalist movement finally got enough momentum to stop the bridge to the island. So locals and visitors can relish the experience of a visit to a pristine barrier island and its ecosystem. Wildlife abounds and the island protects one of the largest and most important reserves called Rookery Bay.
Most commonly known for the south tip of the island, where local boaters congregate at the end of the 8 mile long isthmus, where they can park their boat on the shore and enjoy people watching and the beach and scenery. Since you can't drive to the Island, you will have to rent a boat, go on a tourist boat, visit with a private individual who has a boat, or call the Keewaydin Express water taxi service.

Akimiski Island Wildlife
Akimiski Island in the Hudson Plain Ecozone has a rich assortment of wildlife. Examples include some of the most beautiful migratory shore birds, mammals, and amphibians. The wildlife on Akimiski is what makes this island such a beautiful and memorable place for all visitors to enjoy.
