• Nestled on the highest point of the island you can visit a historic 1887 lighthouse. You are not allowed to enter for your safety. However, you may walk around the perimeter of the lighthouse to admire its unique architecture. The real reward is the majestic views from the observation tower.

Caja de Muertos is part of the municipality of Ponce, one of Puerto Rico’s Nature Reserves. The island is a wonderful destination for beach and nature lovers seeking to experience the pleasures of an uninhabited island free of development. The island was voted as as one of the “The Ten Enchanting Natural Attractions of Puerto Rico”, (Los Diez Encantos Naturales de Puerto Rico). Caja de Muerto is 1.5 long and 1.2 miles wide, 412.22 acres of dry arid land. The reserve also include the cays of Cayo Morrillito and Cayo Berberia.
Caja de Muerto was designated a nature reserve in 1980, managed by DNRA (Department of Natural Resources). Caja de Muertos is a haven for endangered turtles, birds and sea life. The reserve possesses fauna and flora only found here.
La isla de Caja de Muertos es una pequeña isla deshabitada a 8 km de la costa sur de Puerto Rico, frente al barrio Ponce Playa del municipio de Ponce. La isla forma parte de la Reserva Natural Caja de Muertos. Tiene una superficie aproximada de 1,54 km y está coronada por un faro aún en funcionamiento construido en 1887 bajo dominio español y modernizado en 1945 bajo control estadounidense.
La Junta de Planificación de Puerto Rico designó la isla como una reserva natural en 1980 por recomendación del Programa de Manejo de Zonas Costeras. La isla se ha mantenido como un área protegida desde entonces. La protección se debe principalmente al tráfico de tortugas marinas, una especie en peligro de extinción.

We arrive in Ponce, Puerto Rico! There is a happening boardwalk, a super cool island just offshore, and a Walmart where we do a full provision! We have been liveaboards for almost 5 years. We LOVE it but it is definitely a bit more complicated than living in a house.
As liveaboards, a few questions that are always running through our mind include:
Is our anchor secure? Did we leave the dinghy in a safe place? How are we going to get to the grocery store?
All the while looking forward to exploring beautiful places like the island and lighthouse shown here. It is a balance but we love it!
