Are you a Game of Thrones fan? If you are then you must've seen most amazing filming locations in Croatia and one of them is certainly Lokrum Island, a nature preserve with beautiful vegetation, gardens and interesting history.

Johanna and I took a quick boat ride to explore the beautiful little island of Lokrum. The island was full of cute bunnies and curious peacocks. We ended the day with a delicious wine tasting at D'ino wines.

We went on a day trip to LOKRUM ISLAND DUBROVNIK, CROATIA
On Lokrum we visited:
- Fort Royal
- The Botanical Gardens
- The Dead Sea
- The Monastery
- Saw 100s of bunny rabbits and Peacocks too!
After leaving Lokrum, we finished they day by trying Croatian Cheeses!
The Iron Throne, Lokrum Island, Dubrovnik, Croatia.
Whilst visiting Dubrovnik is something I would highly recommend in its own right, Game of Throne fans will simply love hunting Dubrovnik and the Old City for the locations used in the series.
Just off the coast from the Old City of Dubrovnik (used extensively in GoT, as Kings Landing in particular) is the nature reserve of Lokrum Island. Within the Benedictine Monestry on the island is an ornate garden used in season 2 and beside this is a small room containing the Iron Throne prop used in Season 1.
I visited the island in April 2018 and shared the whole exhibit with about 6 people. If located on the main land it would probably have been packed with hundreds of people. In other words, now is the time to go and see it before it is moved to the mainland and, based on its condition, locked away behind a screen or in a showcase.
Unfortunately, both arms of the chair are beginning to show significant wear from people like me sitting on it for photos and resting their hands on the two handgrips on the ends. I would expect the authorities to ban people from sitting on it any day soon as this will be a draw for years to come.
As for Lokrum itself, the view back from the top of Fort Royal to the old city is amazing (the walk up to it is hard work). I arrived on the first ferry and found the area close to the monestery full of the largest, hairiest rabbits I have ever seen...and loads of peacocks.
The far side of the island is surprisingly rocky and actually worth visiting. I believe many bits of the island were used in several episodes of GoT so you could easily spend a day here hunting them out. I spend about 3/4 hours here (1/2 day and I think that's enough. I had time to head back to the old city and tour the Old City walls.

Ferry to Lokrum Island Dubrovnik Croatia
Take the short ferry trip from the Old Harbour in Dubrovnik to Lokrum Island for a day or half day trip. This Unesco National Park has ideal swimming spots and the ruins of a medieval Benedictine Monastery. The cafe, which nestles in the pines and olives, has live music. Background music is Monks by Topher Mohr and Alex Elena.

With a little extra time in Dubrovnik, I would recommend taking a 10 min boat ride from old town to the island of Lokrum. Not only is this island a peaceful escape dotted with peacocks and places to swim but it is also a location where they filmed Game of Thrones.

Lokrum Island - Dubrovnik, Croatia [4K]
The island of Lokrum is a small piece of uninhabited paradise in the Adriatic sea just 600 metres from Dubrovnik Old Town. It features a wide variety of wildlife such as rabbits and peacocks as well as a 1000 year old Benedictine monastery. It was frequently featured as a location in HBO's Game of Thrones with part of the monastery housing a small museum and replica Iron Throne.
Other notable landmarks on the island include Charlottes Well - an oval retaining well, The Dead Sea - a large salt water lake filled with caves and caverns popular with scuba divers, Fort Royal Castle - Built by the French during Napoleons occupation of Croatia on the highest point of the island 300 meters above sea level and the botanical gardens containing many species of plant native to the island.
