Perast, Montenegro - Day trip from Kotor
Perast is one of the most beautiful little places in the Bay of Kotor. This picturesque town lives up to its reputation as one of the best kept secrets in the Adriatic sea. Perast is protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in an area of outstanding natural beauty. This tiny town boasts 16 churches and 17 formerly grand palaces. One of the biggest churches in Perast is the church of Sveti Nikola, which is located on the main square. It was built in 1691, and it impresses with its bell tower which is 55 meters tall and whose bells in 1713 were the biggest in Europe. Perast’s most famous landmarks are actually right in the middle of the waters - two picturesque islands with quite the story behind them. One is called Sveti Djordje (St. George) island, and the other called Gospa od Škrpjela (Our Lady of the Rock). Gospa od Škrpjela (originally called in Venetian “Madonna dello Scarpello”) is particularly interesting given that it is the only artificially built island in the Adriatic sea. It was built upon a rock (Škrpjel) after two Venetian sailors from Perast found a icon of the Virgin Mary on it in 1452. This church is also a museum and is definitely worth visiting. The guide will explain to you how the island and church came to be and show you the various relics inside. The museum contains prehistoric artifacts as well as more recent pieces from the town’s seafaring population. Island of Saint George is other islet off the coast of Perast in Bay of Kotor. Unlike Our Lady of the Rocks, it is a natural island. The island contains Saint George Benedictine monastery from the 12th century and the old graveyard for the old nobility from Perast and further from the whole Bay of Kotor. The town museum is located in Captain Visko Bujovic's palace and is a really interesting stop to see some of the history of not just Perast, but the whole Bay of Kotor. It's filled with a rich collection of furniture and artifacts that were donated by the local population. The town has several restaurants around its waterfront and the cuisine served at these restaurants ranges from traditional to international and deliciously fresh seafood. Perast is an ideal location to stay in the Bay of Kotor. It has a beautiful view towards the peaks around of Orjen and Lovćen mountain ranges. It’s very small and stunningly beautiful and as a UNESCO World heritage site, it is a must-visit!

Our Lady of the Rocks is one of the two islets off the coast of Perast in Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. It is an artificial island created by bulwark of rocks and by sinking old and seized ships loaded with rocks. The Roman Catholic Church of Our Lady of the Rocks is the largest building on the islet; it has a museum attached. There is also a small gift shop close to the church and a navigation light at the western end of the islet.
According to legend, the islet was made over the centuries by Croat local seamen who kept an ancient oath after finding the icon of Madonna and Child on the rock in the sea on July 22, 1452. Upon returning from each successful voyage, they laid a rock in the Bay. Over time, the islet gradually emerged from the sea. The custom of throwing rocks into the sea is alive even nowadays. Every year on the sunset of July 22, an event called fašinada in the local dialect, when local residents take their boats and throw rocks into the sea, widening the surface of the island, takes place.
The church was renovated in 1722. The church contains 68 paintings by Tripo Kokolja, a famous 17th-century baroque artist from Perast. His most important painting, ten meters long, is The Death of the Virgin. There are also paintings by Italian artists, and an icon (circa 1452) of Our Lady of the Rocks, by Lovro Dobričević of Kotor. The church also houses a collection of silver votive tablets and a famous votive tapestry embroidered by Jacinta Kunić-Mijović from Perast. It took her 25 years to finish it while waiting for her darling to come from a long journey, and eventually, she became blind. She used golden and silver fibres but what makes this tapestry so famous is the fact that she also embroidered her own hair in it.
Island of Saint George is second island of Perast in Bay of Kotor, Montenegro. Unlike Gospa od Škrpjela, it is a natural island. A small action took place during the Siege of Cattaro on 14 October 1813 when the French held island was captured by a British and Sicilian naval force.
The island contains Saint George Benedictine monastery from the 12th century and the old graveyard for the old nobility from Perast and further from the whole Bay of Kotor.

Perast (Montenegrin and Serbian Cyrillic: Пераст, pronounced [pɛ̌rast], Italian: Perasto) is an old town on the Bay of Kotor in Montenegro. It is situated a few kilometres northwest of Kotor and is noted for its proximity to the islets of St. George and Our Lady of the Rocks.
Geography
Perast lies beneath the hill of St. Ilija (873 m), on a cape that separates the Bay of Risano from that of Kotor, and overlooks the Verige strait, the narrowest part of the Bay of Kotor. The average yearly temperature in Perast is 18.3°C, and the number of sunny days is 240 (or around 2,500 sunny hours per year).
Near Perast there are two islets: one is called Sveti Đorđe (St. George) and the other Gospa od Škrpjela (Our Lady of the Rocks), and each has a picturesque chapel. Gospa od Škrpjela is particularly interesting given that it is the only artificially-built island in the Adriatic, with an area of 3,030 m² — it was built upon a rock (Škrpjel) after two Venetian sailors from Perast found a picture of the Virgin Mary on it in 1452.

Last page like a piece of Venice flowed only in Kotor. It is a symbol of two islands located side by side. High Island Spa has gotta open to tourists. The name of this island, and scroll Eau Spa Le Perla is a means 'reef' or 'Virgin of the Rocks'. Originally, only a small reef where the crew was to fly made of artificial stone island where there is a mysterious legend yen. Moreute swichi brother to the legendary ohneunde back to finish fishing at night, I found the torch at about 3 square meters that reef. One of them was ill brother, touch the torch party bottle was immediately healed. I sent the brother with gratitude Bring it St. Nicolas Cathedral, later it magically came back here now. This happened three times, got up, fisherman thought that the last page is here just to have a place where they built a stone torch in place over hundreds of years to create the island, and built a church. Cathedral built in the 17th century and a painting of the Virgin Mary in life, there is a torch was legendary brother is found enshrined. Like a cathedral filled with effort and desire of the crew, we pray for safe sailing and donated thousands of silver plate may gotta decorated the walls. All the exhibited figure also shows that the imperative of sailors who fought against the rough sea. The hope created by the islands of the sea people. If the town is still young in July Banks carried the stones are doubled. Perast + Our Lady of the Rocks | Day Trip from Kotor, Montenegro Travel Food Video Transcript:
Well good morning good morning guys. Good morning guys. It is another beautiful day here in Kotor (Котор) so we decided let's take a day trip. So we're going to be hopping on a bus and visiting Perast which is a small little town also by the water. Um yeah and once we're there we can hop on a boat and go visit a few islands so it should be a nice day.
We did manage to find the bus, though it involved running up the street since we were in the wrong spot, but aside from that, it was a quick 20-minute ride up the coast to Perast.
Located on the Bay of Kotor, Perast (Perasto) is a small town that hit its peak in the 18th century under the Venetian Republic. During this time, it had as many as four active shipyards and the citizens of the town were allowed to trade and sell goods without tax on the Venetian market. This made them very wealthy, and while today Perast has more of a sleepy vibe, you can still see traces of that wealth in the number of palazzos that line the waterfront.
So the boat frequency turned out to be more like 30 minutes - that morning we learned “just 5 minutes” should not be taken literally.
There are two islands off the coast of Perast (Perasto). One is St. George, which holds an old monastery and is not open to visitors, and the other is Our Lady of the Rocks, which we visited. The latter is an artificial island that was created by sinking old ships loaded with rocks. Here you’ll find the Church of Our Lady of the Rocks, which is the main attraction. To be honest, this is a quick visit and you likely won’t need more than 15-20 minutes on the island, but you do get some nice views of the surrounding mountains.
Then, after that little excursion we could only think about one thing: lunch!
After Sam’s drone session, we had enough time to climb up to visit one more church, and then it was pretty much time to call it a day.
Perast (Perasto) is a charming seaside town, but it’s very small and some of the tourist sights weren’t open so there wasn't much to do, but it’s great for a half-day trip if you want to see something aside from Kotor (Котор)!
Alright guys so here we are wrapping up a lovely little day trip from Kotor (Котор). Yeah, it sure was lovely and such an affordable trip. I mean we only paid 1 Euro each way. We're just waiting to catch the bus that comes every half hour. Just a few hours here is enough time really. You can wander around the old town, you can take a boat ride out to the islands, have a nice comfortable lunch. Do maybe a little bit more exploring. And then you're ready to go back. So it makes for a great half day trip I would say. Bye for now.
